As not-a-guitarist, I. had no idea what that amazing cushiony sound was under Bowie's "As The World Falls Down" when I was a kid, but I loved how it sounded. It wasn't until much later that I knew it was a bass without frets, and I still think it's one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. It's like the French horn of the guitar/bass world.

Play both fretted and fretless. They offer different sounds and playing styles, which opens up your options as to the type of sounds you want. I love both. Just replaced my old fretless Ibanez with a new Fender Fretless Jazz Bass American Pro II. It is awesome! The fretless smooth transition is very silky and seamless, while fretted basses tend to be much more precise and often offer more staccato.

Rob being sideways and sending it in a way that would make my heart drop in the first 20 seconds isn't something I needed. More Rob having fun please. As for fretless bass, my personal experience says don't rely on it in the same way you'd use a normal bass. Think of it as an uncontrollable being that needs to lead but will hold the team up when needed. Having fretted bass is a great idea

It's hard to pinpoint the difference, but... I feel like the collaborative songwriting process on the start of this one feels a lot more similar to my experiencees writing with others. In a great way. There is something so particularly beauitful about two people with similar instruments pulling and shoving on ideas for the harmonic context of the piece.. Very much reminded me of watching 'Get Back,' which can only mean incredible things. Rob calmy stepping out to the booth saying ' The guitars getting in the way of the fretless.' Whether that is the 'right,' call or not, it really seems like the guys are getting into a really great songwriting place. The balance of both songwriting id's & ego's seem to be balancing out nicely. I hope you guys both take this the right way, but for these projects.... I think yall really need eachother. Every time one of you starts rolling down one path too hard, I'm hoping the other 'Just pull him back a lil bit.' & it's happening more and more. It would be a blank page without your careless creativity, but it's funny how greatness comes from constant external collaborative creative restriction/editing. Well done. (Also, I think the Sonic Boom team deserve their names in the vid description and credits at the end. Even if they are quick. Your production assistant carrying ye as always! lol)

Hey Andrew and rob!!! First of all I love the new episode I love that Rob writes how I do and immediately find the major and minor 7 on every instrument lol I love Andrew’s voice and playing style. you guys work so well together and I love seeing how you guys write and your excitement. It’s very inspiring and encouraging and I appreciate that so much. You guys kick ass! #2!! I’m commenting because I genuinely wish you guys would utilize the band more often!! I truly think you guys could do an alternate story line with them. They’re secretly trying to undermine you guys cause they feel invalidated and that’s a brilliant start to like a alternate story line lol I wish you guys would do a battle of the bands with them, sonic boom versus first of October lol Could do like a open mic night or talent night and let the crowd or KZbin decide if they deserve their own show now lol I think they do! Personally Whenever there’s bass or drums on a track I’d love to see them “prove themselves” and maybe they win the battle of the bands And it’d be funny as hell. Have them talking shit on you guys and Talking trash. Cause they’re jaded because they want to be part of the show!! That’d be amazing lol Cheers guys much love I look forward to every episode :)❤

@liamodellbass

As a fretless bass enjoyer myself, the thing I love most about playing one is playing melodies! There's so much nuance available to you in terms of vibrato, glissando/portamento, etc. And with the right setup, that classic fretless "Mwah" lends itself to a very vocal/lyrical quality. There's validity in being critical of this sound as the bass is not necessarily fulfilling its usual role in a traditional band context, though I believe there's an equal validity in embracing the melodic fretless bass sound in other contexts!

I‘ve been a guitarist for close to 15 years at this point and decided to actually get into bass last February. Going straight for fretless was kinda the way to go for me so I picked up a Squier CV 60s fretless bass. I can’t recommend that bass enough! I had to adjust the neck quite a bit, because the factory setup was trash, but it plays and sounds great with flatwounds. Pretty impressive bass for just 400€! Maybe look into that one and save yourself a whole bunch of work 😄
