What an absolutely amazing time to be growing up and to be influenced by music. The emerging New Wave music with Flock of Seagulls, Strange Advance, The Fixx, Men Without Hats, OMD, Human League, Joy Division, XTC, Freur, and many more. Not to mention everything else that was happening at the same time with Ska, Rock, Pop, early Rap... there was so much going on!! So very thankful.

Isn't it mad to think that a relatively little-known New Wave band like Freuer eventually evolved into 90s electronica legends Underworld! Just shows how wide-ranging the influence of New Wave has proven to be
@Guido_XL11 ай бұрын
Howard Jones and Nick Kershaw are the ones that stuck in the back of my mind ever since. And indeed, Flock of Seagulls, right after them. Although, my actual infatuation with the music of that era was U.K., when they released their first album in 1978 (with "In the Dead of Night"), followed by their more commercial album "Danger Money". Not comparable to the synth-pop that emerged in the New Wave that had already picked up pace then, but U.K. was quite appealing to me in my early teens years.
@Guido_XL11 ай бұрын
@@DaveAndBeth1978 The early eighties were the era of synth-pop in general. I still love the music from Matia Bazar with their hit "Ti Sento" from 1985. It's a CD that I keep playing, regardless its age (nowadays as an mp3 storage, for convenience). Some songs from Kim Wilde remain quite appealing, like "The Touch" from 1984. One of my all time favourites.

@@Guido_XL thanks for the information on U.K. Being from the east coast of Canada, I never heard of them until now and I just checked out In the Dead Night and really liked it, the base in that song reminds me a little bit of Yes. @Nicoda1st5 жыл бұрын
DaveST songs from those times do that to people! Especially if you’re ear is a little trained to listen to all them weird noises and stuff! I personally listen the first time to this song in the 80’s in my cousins club, and every time i hear it, it brings me back to the exact time and place. But there are other songs that can do that, like songs from Yazoo and similar 80’s groups like OMD ecc. Try listen to Sharp & Numan’s song “Change your Mind”, might give you similar chills, or a song by Mike Oldfield called “Crises”

music is not about how it's made or how it's performed, music is about what you hear and how it makes you feel.

Wrong. Music is how it’s made and how it’s performed. Music is art form and performance/mastery is most important. Because noise can also makes you feel. But it’s not music.

1985. I heard this is in a friend's car on a night drive. A night drive back then was hours on back roads, windows open, heads hanging out as our music blasted on moonless country roads either to the lake or the beach. AMAZING memories. There was this [and so much more.] Then there was Underworld and "Under The Radar" which deservedly sealed my love for this collective.

This is exactly the spirit of the 80's - Always if I hear it, I'm still there, exactly WITHIN, in my first date, my first kiss, still in my first "lost in music". Thx a lot for this part of timelessness! No wonder that I became a fan of UNDERWORLD's Music - this are the founding people ;o)

Watching "Take Me Home Tonight" and the trampoline scene came on with this song. I had to pause and listen to this song in full. That movie nailed the different 80's music at the right time.

It returns at last!! This video was on KZbin years ago and it was removed for some reason (probably some stupid copyright or something ) I remember watching this on a video jukebox in London in about 1983 and thinking “this band is so oringinal”. I still think this is one of the best songs to come out of the 80’s.

i used to fall asleep to this song, over ten years ago. fifteen years old and not sure what life would become. this song reminds me it's okay to be unsure of it all. this is not only the best 80s song but the best song of the century.

I was 19 years old, heard it once on WLIR, ran out to Tower Records and bought the album as the 12” wasn’t in. I still have it and listen to it. For whatever reason this song has always yanked my heart right out of my chest and makes me weep. Yet I love it!

To me, the lyrics seem like an ode to the memories and fleeting moments of a better time, performances specifically. Which feels apropos when listening to this song in 2024. The 80s had such an amazing sound.
