Besides Jakob being correct that you SHOULD correct your ear over time (although some never get it), just think of it as sharp being a little too high, and flat being a little too low. On the note, this is. Often folks with vocal problems go flat when trying to go up when their voice won't cooperate. It sounds very off to you when you hear it...you just know it.

Is there some kind of technique to modulate your mouth or voice to adjust flatness or sharpness? I am a musician but new at singing. While practicing with the notes on a digital piano if I adjusted the shape of my inner mouth it would adjust the pitch. But, I don’t know how proper that is for healthy singing. When I say I’m new to singing, I mean 0 knowledge.

Thank you Freya, I'm 71, sang for fun for about 6 years about 30 years ago. since then not even a note! I have been in weekly voice lessons with someone who is really great and who has really worked on redeveloping my voice. I'm still singing flat but it is gradually getting better. I can't wait to play with your suggestions. So far though, I can't quite distinguish between being tighter and compression without tightness. In other words, when I try to slide the note up to pitch I can feel tightness. any thoughts?

Freya's totally right. I always record and playback, but one time, that wasn't enough. I finally broke out my small midi piano and mapped out the melody on the keys, then sung while playing keyboard. Even though it wasn't as good as an actual piano vibrations), I could finally identify what I was doing wrong, and a great plus was that seeing the melody visually on the piano greatly simplified the "movement" across the octave that I had to sing.

Hello, I have a question. I actually feel like my voice is too high most of the time, and people have said you have a really sharp voice. But I don't feel like I'm trying too hard to sing sharp. I could sing low too and it sounds sharp. I'm trying to learn or see if there is any examples of how I can make my voice "softer" not too sharp...but not too soft... It usually sounds sharper when I sing in the mornings. Thank you for the vid I'll different keep practicing with my piano ...😊

Here's a tip that might help you. It's visual, so it makes the technique easy to picture and feel, as if in 3-D: Imagine that the note is falling from above and DROPPING onto the correct pitch. Virtual gravity is helping you to accurately land that note. Hope that helps. :)

Even didn’t know there are different systems of music in the world, it does make more sense to me now!:) Yeah and singing along with instruments is GREAT, I see (hear:)) that I can go reeeally wrong with notes (I dunno if I’m flat/sharp sometimes, never thought about it and now I’ll definitely WILL) and when I practise with piano and feel that resonance, wow, best thing to train the pitches. :)

Why do you think you? Is it because of what I ate or what I drink? I mean what's the reason behind those struggles I mention above? Can you give us advice? Good advice,, But I will go to the route of the problem or the elephant in the room which no one will mention,, People think out of the box please.. Change the pitch of A4 to 437Hz... there you go ,, problem solved... :-) Most people have a problem with flat singing when they are singing in the upper middle part of their voice.. Jokes aside.... modern 440Hz is to high for A4.. The voices natural relaxed pitch for A4 is 432Hz.. (-31 cents),, But that might sound a little to calm for modern contemporary music.. Go up to 437Hz (-11.84 cents).. All voices sound better,, strain less,, and you get rid of the flat singing which is a phenomenen I do blaim partly on the A4=440Hz pitch and 12-TET.. The passaggios lies at a really bad place when A4 is 439Hz-443Hz for most people/voices.. For most voices there is a transition from 437Hz to 440Hz (11.8 cents) which makes singing in your upper range a drag.. THis is particulary a problem for heavy voices related to the passaggios, making 438Hz (8 cents) a physical limit for those singers when they are at the second passaggio.. Former Europea pitch before 440Hz was 435Hz (-19.8 cents). From ~1860 to ~ 1940s (most of Europe).. 435Hz was chosen in collaboration between composers, singers and physicians in 1859.. I have never seen any vocal considarations for the implementation of A4= 440Hz pitch . 440Hz was more or less "imported" from the US during the second world war (import of 440Hz instruments from the US and a british/german suggestion of 440Hz in a meeting in ~1940. A4=435Hz is a really great pitch for choirs,, you get less of the tense sound when a lot of singers have to "pull" chest and sound strained.. And the singers heady notes sound to thin in 440Hz-443Hz tuning... Opera at modern 442-443Hz sounds way to sharp and heady for my liking... I acutally think that opera would have a broader audience due to a more pleasing sound if we lower the standard pitch to 435Hz... Also in Italy in the late 1940s to ~1970s you would have the orchesters tune down to 437/438Hz (as low as they could go with there 440Hz fixed instruments) when performing pieces by e.g Verdi..
