Your frequent use of the word lubricant has reminded me of a joke. A daughter was snooping around her parents bathroom and found a tube of astroglide... Dad walks in and sees her reading the tube sounding it out. She then turns to her father, deadly serious look upon her face and asks, "Daddy, what's a lubricunt?" Dad chuckles and replies, "exactly."

Partly yes. Also that FLIR camera is a longer wavelength device, which never works as well for temperatures this high. The Blacksmith’s eye really isn’t so bad on hot targets. My calibrated eye says 950C. That, or get an infrared pyrometer that works at 700nm or so. The reading will be twice as accurate in this circumstance.

Flow drilling is kind of like friction sawing, get the red dot in front of the blade and keep pushing. Basically don't stop and let it cool down. Same with the flow drill, once the metal gets red or yellow hot you shouldn't back off on pressure and probably why the one flow drill broke. I know the Bridgeport Mill bogged down, but one trick is to heat the spot with a torch then flow drill, it helps. One of the tricks I used out in the field using a modified magnetic base high speed drill press. Yes, like you, I've been to B/F Egypt many times and had to use what was available when half or none of our stuff didn't show up and had to get the job done under time constraints. Thinking outside the box becomes second nature. Fun times!

+AvE Metal stearates are basically different types of soaps. Sodium stearate is the active ingredient in normal bar soap. Potassium stearate, I belive, is in soft soaps/gels. Calcium stearate is a "soap" that was commonly used as the thickening agent in grease. Lithium stearates are used as the thickener these days because they're more heat resistant... the oil will actually break down and burn before the thickener gives up so that the grease will not melt and run out of bearings. Zinc Stearate... Effectively, you are lubricating your little red lipstick with soap.

Static threads hold a lot more than threads will clamp while turning. I had a vehicle with a tilt steering wheel. There were two pins about 3/8" in diameter with 10-24 threads to pull the pins. I tried several including stainless and would just rip the threads off when I tried turning a heavy nut to pull the pins. This was long before I had much more than a bench grinder and a hand drill. I drilled and tapped a 1/4" bolt and ran a 10-24 stud into the pin and bolt end and pulled the pins with the 1/4-20 threads.

This is a response i left way down the page. hopping Ave will see it.annealing by letting the heat bleed out into the surrounding metal isn't quite as fast. Instant cold oil applied would do much better because the heat that dissipates into the surrounding material is not the same as a quench. It's half annealing and half quenching. since the material already comes with a small degree of hardness (even tho its mild) anyhow long story short, they cancel each other out almost completely. Almost. That is why we noticed the partial hardening. just as if he wanted to anneal it, he'd have to heat the entire piece. Or slight hardening will occur when the heat bleeds into the surrounding unheated steel. thanks for the videos. Seen em all, and my phone gives notifications to every new one.

Ambient room temperature will also make a slight difference. If we take the same EVERYTHING and do the same process in each of our shops. The outcome would be slightly different. AvE's shop is sometimes below O°C. mine is a toasty 71.5°C. If we annealed our metal his would be slightly harder and slightly easier to snap crack or shatter in the cold. Any time messing with an electron microscope will show that just a few degrees will change things slightly. Even the amount of heats without normalizing will change the atom placement slightly. This is why I believe that throwing a ounce of cold oil emediately after backing out would harden the steel. P//s if the steel had NO CARBON. It would be iron.
