Your frequent use of the word lubricant has reminded me of a joke. A daughter was snooping around her parents bathroom and found a tube of astroglide... Dad walks in and sees her reading the tube sounding it out. She then turns to her father, deadly serious look upon her face and asks, "Daddy, what's a lubricunt?" Dad chuckles and replies, "exactly."

Steel would not only have to have a high enough carbon content to harden but you would have to quench it in oil or water. Just left to cool on its own is normalizing/annealing.
@Scare3243

There is steel that does harden when left to cool by itself (high-alloy steel for example, gets up to like 62HRC) , just depends on the kind of steel

Good question, although I'd be hesitant to say it would definitely weld, the bitting is a critical part in stir welding. I don't think it would have the outward penetration to pull it off. 1 beer says IF it does weld, it won't hold up to a comparable butt joint ;)

And another reason is that the metal is emitting red light (not infrared) and of course the wavelength is above the range of the camera.
@jimsvideos7201
@jimsvideos7201 8 жыл бұрын
If you need to be sure mask a spot off and give it a coat of flat paint; if it looks different on the IR camera then the emissivity is different. If not then you're off to the races.
@jasonji1900

Partly yes. Also that FLIR camera is a longer wavelength device, which never works as well for temperatures this high. The Blacksmith’s eye really isn’t so bad on hot targets. My calibrated eye says 950C. That, or get an infrared pyrometer that works at 700nm or so. The reading will be twice as accurate in this circumstance.

Flow drilling is kind of like friction sawing, get the red dot in front of the blade and keep pushing. Basically don't stop and let it cool down. Same with the flow drill, once the metal gets red or yellow hot you shouldn't back off on pressure and probably why the one flow drill broke. I know the Bridgeport Mill bogged down, but one trick is to heat the spot with a torch then flow drill, it helps. One of the tricks I used out in the field using a modified magnetic base high speed drill press. Yes, like you, I've been to B/F Egypt many times and had to use what was available when half or none of our stuff didn't show up and had to get the job done under time constraints. Thinking outside the box becomes second nature. Fun times!

+AvE Metal stearates are basically different types of soaps. Sodium stearate is the active ingredient in normal bar soap. Potassium stearate, I belive, is in soft soaps/gels. Calcium stearate is a "soap" that was commonly used as the thickening agent in grease. Lithium stearates are used as the thickener these days because they're more heat resistant... the oil will actually break down and burn before the thickener gives up so that the grease will not melt and run out of bearings. Zinc Stearate... Effectively, you are lubricating your little red lipstick with soap.

If you were to place two pieces of metal together and drill/flow through them with that, would the metal weld together or would the metal pieces simply be locked together? Ooooorrrr would the flow create two perfect holes in the metal pieces that would be able to slide off one another? (like putting a smaller pipe in a bigger pipe)

Static threads hold a lot more than threads will clamp while turning. I had a vehicle with a tilt steering wheel. There were two pins about 3/8" in diameter with 10-24 threads to pull the pins. I tried several including stainless and would just rip the threads off when I tried turning a heavy nut to pull the pins. This was long before I had much more than a bench grinder and a hand drill. I drilled and tapped a 1/4" bolt and ran a 10-24 stud into the pin and bolt end and pulled the pins with the 1/4-20 threads.

About hardening mild steel, I welded myself up a chipping hammer for when I have to use a stick welder, and I noticed that the mild steel just got tore the fuck up from scraping slag, so I honed it on a grinder and took it to an oxyacetylene torch. After quenching it, it holds up like a charm. I haven't had to hone it at all after hardening it.

This is a response i left way down the page. hopping Ave will see it.annealing by letting the heat bleed out into the surrounding metal isn't quite as fast. Instant cold oil applied would do much better because the heat that dissipates into the surrounding material is not the same as a quench. It's half annealing and half quenching. since the material already comes with a small degree of hardness (even tho its mild) anyhow long story short, they cancel each other out almost completely. Almost. That is why we noticed the partial hardening. just as if he wanted to anneal it, he'd have to heat the entire piece. Or slight hardening will occur when the heat bleeds into the surrounding unheated steel. thanks for the videos. Seen em all, and my phone gives notifications to every new one.

Cool process! Amazing. Although in 30 years of machining and precision sheet metal including tube steel of all thickness from 11 gauge to 3/16", I never once saw the need for this method. Really cool stuff, I'm still curious about the potential to make bushings, what if you used high carbon steel, and quenched after drilling?

Ave! Us bladesmiths use white-out to prevent forge welding when making canister Damascus is sure it's the same idea, both zinc. Try that as lube.

Rockwell scale was awesome to learn a wee time ago.. learned alot about heat treatment when working on aircraft landing gear. Heat treatment was a crazy.

Ambient room temperature will also make a slight difference. If we take the same EVERYTHING and do the same process in each of our shops. The outcome would be slightly different. AvE's shop is sometimes below O°C. mine is a toasty 71.5°C. If we annealed our metal his would be slightly harder and slightly easier to snap crack or shatter in the cold. Any time messing with an electron microscope will show that just a few degrees will change things slightly. Even the amount of heats without normalizing will change the atom placement slightly. This is why I believe that throwing a ounce of cold oil emediately after backing out would harden the steel. P//s if the steel had NO CARBON. It would be iron.

This is one of the 3 methods that holds the new aluminum Fords together. Looks very similar to when you shoot A36 steel with a high powered or magnum rifle. I use stearates as a lubricant in bullet lube for my BPCR, it's a high pressure lube that works wonders.

It looks like a bullet going into the metal. It even leaves a similar hole. Lead bullets also use a waxy lube to keep the barrel clean.

Great shots of the friction drilling! If Tungsten Carbide is so fantastic at high temperatures, why don't they make brake rotors out of it? Is it it too brittle?

I made a hammer in high school shop in the late 80's. We case hardened them an all I remember is we put the hammer in a tub of power and put it into a kiln for an hour. This also had chrome in it too for a rust free finish. The powder was white if I recall correctly.

white out also has zink. Blacksmith trick for canister damascus. You definitely have to soak it in a air tight canister with carbon for sure to add carbon with that. You can try and water quench it to get it a little harder.

How many horses is that clapped out bridgeport? Wondering if my crappy drill press from cambodian tire would have enough guts to do this with the little 1/4" flow drill? Probably not enough down force just like the hand drill test.

if you tried using graphite as a lubricant, wouldn't it just get absorbed and make the steel harden? Well... never the mind, looks like you figured the same as me a couple minutes later!

Will it work if you try to friction drill into a solid block of steel or would there be too much heat and nowhere for the melting/smoldering steel to go?

Those Infrared thermometers don't work well in a machine shop. Shiny metal like an endmill or work piece has very low emissivity. Low emissivity means poor radiation. The thermometer will tell you it's much cooler than it really is.
