Sorry about the audio sync. This game had the same capture issues that saltybet does, where for unknown reasons it naturally desyncs over time not only with us, but with itself. I tried to readjust as best I could each round to compensate, but some games don't play nicely with capture, and the session was good enough that I didn't want to throw it out.

Time for some BirdFacts®! We have herons in the US (not sure how prevalent they are in Canada) along lakes, rivers, and coastal areas. What you see in the battlefield, though, are cranes, which are related. They're (both) incredibly chill animals and very friendly when plied with fish, shrimp, etc. (I once lured an egret into a condo I was staying in via clever application of thawed frozen shrimp). If you've never seen a crane/egret/heron fly before, they tuck their heads in reeeeal tight and stick their legs out all the way, and if you aren't used to it, it looks like they're flying backwards. They eat everything from fish to snakes. In all cases, they will often stab their prey with their beaks before flipping it into their open beaks or pulling it off with their talons and then scooping it up manually with their beaks. Yes, snakes. Big-ass snakes. They silently and slooooowly stalk their prey when fishing/hunting. Once they're ready to strike, it happens so fast that you'll miss it if you blink. They have flowing locks that blow in the wind. I'm not even joking.

In case anyone's interested: In practice, the frontal cut requires you to lift the sword over your head and aligning it with your spine, then throwing the cut straight down and forward, whilst keeping your stance low and compact so as not to expose your legs as a target to the opponent. The high cut is essentially the same, except you're already poised to bring the blade down against your back when you throw the cut (meaning it takes less time to attack), but it's considered harder to defend or parry from high stance. The rear stance is made after the front stance and high stance, and is always done with a backwards movement of the body (as you're exposing your front, a bit of distance is made for safety). This last stance does not require alignment of the blade with the spine to ensure the cut is straight - instead the sword is swung overhead powerfully, for more power and longer range. The draw cut this game uses as the "parry" from the rear stance is a cut to the arteries under the armpit - or the ribcage (not a gut-cut, as it looks like in the game). It's fast and risky, but if the opponent is in an awkward stance, it's devastating. The techniques demonstrated in this game are based on kana stances from Bushido (I practice Aikido, and we use the exact same ones as in the game), not really what you'd use in a fight. In practice, these techniques train blade edge alignment, body positioning and focus.

Fun fact: Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Tokugawa shogun and a total big-dicked G, was occasionally compared to a tanuki. Tanukis are known for having oversized testicles. So Tokugawa's balls may indeed be pretty damn big. Also, the kiai actually serves a couple of purposes. Not only does it have the potential to surprise an opponent as you're striking, causing them to react in a way that may make them vulnerable, but it also causes all your muscles to tense in a way that's beneficial for striking. Granted, it's something you can learn to do without the shout, but it's still one way to do it. Then there's the whole metagame kind of aspect where you use it unpredictably, sometimes not even with an accompanying strike, so that your opponent doesn't know what's actually coming. The samurai hairstyle, called a chonmage, actually serves a purpose as well. Having the hair pulled up in a topknot like that helps hold a helmet steady, and having the pate shaved allowed the helmet to fit more tightly, and reduced the effects of heat, which could be a serious issue when wearing armor. It was also a status symbol; samurai were literally required to have their hair like that. Also, the black samurai Woolie's talking about was named Yasuke. He was a servant of an Italian Jesuit given to (or allowed to enter the service of) Nobunaga, who was apparently fascinated with him. Not believing his skin color, he had him strip to the waist and scrub his skin to prove it wasn't inked over.

So i looked it up just to make sure Woolie was talking through his asshole about "Yasuo the Black samurai". Turns out he wasn't wrong technically. There was an ancient black samurai but his name was 'Yasuke'. Also he fought against Nobunaga's Army so now I have to point my attention to Koei Tecm/ Omega Force and scream at them until they add him into Samurai Warriors!

The whole story behind that gentleman's life is incredible, washing up in Japan as a non-asian much less non-Japanese person not knowing word one and then going on to not only survive but thrive in an alien culture, I couldn't imagine pulling that off.
