The fact that they not only looked at the tutorial but also actually tried out learning the mechanics really surprised me. Woolie even popped open the command menu once at some point. I kind of wish they did this more often. That said, I'm also kind of surprised at how generally positive they were over this "anime" fighter. I mean, Pat was still making fun of stuff and Matt still sounded like he didn't want to be here but not as much as they usually do. And Woolie was just very enthusiastic about almost everything. I know this is the second time they are looking at the series, the first time on the previous version was also somewhat positive, but still. I guess it's just refreshing after how the last couple of videos on fighters like this turned out.
@yojo86676 жыл бұрын
I mostly think its because of two things: One, they've already known the game and coming back to it with a lot more knowledge made the experience more enjoyable. and two, UNIST is just a fun fighter. I never played an anime fighter that made me go "Wow" to everything and want to see what everything felt like. Its like when you're a kid and you're wathcing a movie and you see all these weapons and wonder how they're like except you're in that room of weapons, you use one, and go "What do the others do?". A lot of the anime fighters (that I've played anyways) always had this problem where they want to be unique with their own systems but loses its ability to be enjoyable by its own characters and general mechanics. UNIST has a movement system thats so much fun to ride with, a combo system thats a lot more inviting than most if not any fighter, and the playstyles for most characters are so open that it just creates this curiosity of which character to try out next rather than feeling like a cast of characters that look interesting but you're only interested in the one because you don't want to take the time into learning all that new shit the other characters don't share with eachother gameplay wise.

I feel like everyone's always so eager to jump to the whole "oh god it's so complicated and anime" thing (even while it's being explained) when if you calm down for like 10 seconds it's not even that crazy. GRD bar goes up when you play good, player with higher bar gets a buff, buff can be spent on a cancel. Still has fewer meters than SFV
@vVAstrAVv6 жыл бұрын
I mean The "ugh too much" reaction is all you can expect when your tutorial begins with a list. Instead of just easing people in naturally. And this Fucking game has FIVE LISTS. the smallest of which having like ten options. Ten options btw. Should never be less than your main menu. Even if they are all useless no shit things like "heres health and how to move you autist" which should be common sense if youre even barely smart enough to READ that option
@hilleltaco6 жыл бұрын
Yeah but (as Woolie explained) not all of those things on the list were unique game mechanics, a lot of it was actually advanced fighting game tech _beyond_ the base mechanics. Stuff most games wouldn't teach you, which is why the tutorial in this game is so good. Basic stuff is still necessary, you can't assume every player knows the genre already, and some games deal with that stuff differently. I also don't really see the issue with having a list, that's usually the normal format for these games, and keeps things nicely organized. Honestly I wasn't even really talking about the tutorial part, more just the tendency to see one extra meter on the screen and act like it's incomprehensible. To be fair, Pat was pretty reasonable and seemed to understand things after a few matches, but Matt usually seems to get stuck in the "WHAT IS THIS ANIME" phase On a side note, not sure how to feel about the autist thing, being autistic myself, but let's not get into that
@hilleltaco6 жыл бұрын
+CLANG CLANG CLANG CLANG Adding an example to your point, I had to look up how blocking works in relation to different moves in Tekken 7, _and_ how breaking grabs works, because the game never tells you any of this. I'd take a long list over literally no attempt
@ScorchedEarth976 жыл бұрын
@@hilleltaco Honestly, same. I've always found games like Blazblue and Guilty Gear way easier to play than SF or Tekken. Like, I get the extra bars may confuse some at first, but, if you're just playing for fun, you're not gonna really account for them too much.
@vVAstrAVv6 жыл бұрын
@@hilleltaco im not saying the tutorials bad. Its just delivered kinda bad. Think about any good tutorials for minigames or something. Lets just use witcher 3s gwent. Its a much simpler game sure. But it teaches you just by walking you through a game Now a baaad tutorial example that comes to mind is blitzballs in ffx For someone like me Who likes to jump in and play with all the peices before doing the puzzle. When i see a list come up i get sensory overload and end up like "huh ap? Divide my foes? attack minus defense and distance wuuh. Power shots? Solve for ap if wakka = y?!?" And especially for a new fighter which you probably bought to fuckin play lol the list wall feels more like another barrier to fun. Which after already sitting through the games install is just annoying And I Know you said lets not get into it but the autist thing was a jab at the games condescension for actually thinking it has to explain MOVING and FREAKING HP. Like. Fighting games are pretty damn niche in the gaming community. Their not babbies first video game Nothing to do with any actual handicaps

I never understood fighting game people and their distaste of anime fighters. Except for Woolie, the rest of them like Matt, Pat and even the entire Maximillian Dood group hates on anything anime the moment it pops up on their screen. People with the most anime merchandise in the world shits on anime like they need everyone to know they're aware that it's anime. Max especially has this insecurity. "ANIME ADVENTURE" on every anime fighter he plays like he's afraid his fans will judge him for letting it sit at the cool kids table. The guy goes to a nerd convention every year to scream at people who play games competitively. What dignity do you have?

Unfortunately, that's just how Japanese animation in general is treated nowadays. It does suck, what with all the sweeping generalizations and stigmatizations constantly being made. It's to the point where I refrain from bringing up some stuff that I think is pretty neat to others simply because I know it'll turn into a shitshow due to some surface elements. I still remember that one stream Simmons did playing an "anime game" where he equated "anime fans" as being mentally challenged. That's more or less the standard of what to expect.
@milesedgeworth1326 жыл бұрын
@@shadowmaksim I don't get the logic either. It makes no sense to judge something by its artstyle, but it's become such a meme that it's impossible to argue against. The magic "Weeb" card comes out and everyone acts like it's the finishing move. It's so irrational and retards actually respect others for not liking anime simply because it's anime. I can understand judging a single game, everyone has that game they're stupidly refusing to play because of one reason or another, but these guys are going beyond the call of duty to hate on a vague classification of an artstyle. I can't imagine any other reason than insecurity especially when it's trigger happy "weeb" labelling like they're preempting criticism.
@MukuonChannel6 жыл бұрын
Miles has already embraced anime! Nah, I kid. But for real, Max doesn't even mind the anime aesthetic, he's just either: Looking for the roster for a character who looks just like him (him being depicted on the channel arts that is, character looking like Ken Masters or something), or finding a worthwhile gameplay like he did with Chaos Code.
@Gamsterjeff6006 жыл бұрын
If anything Max does that shit in jest but not being a pure asshole about it. It may seem that way but it isnt. He is at least not a fullon dick about it. But yea I understand how you feel. I love the name Phonon because in-story the explanation is specifically that agents chose their shitty edgelord code names, so sword-girl is just like "What? You really named yourself that? That's so weird!" and Phonon's just like "Fuck, why did she have to recognize me? This suuccksss!!!"
