In terms of the story, Matt, a few other characters in KOF know about Verse; Saisyu tells Kyo and his teammates about him, Tung knows about him because of Shun'ei having part of his power, Nakoruru, Muimui, and Love Heart are all drawn from their worlds to the present to face Verse, etc. But yeah, in game there isn't much story about Verse, which leaves SNK's website for KOF 14 to fill in the blanks

Does this game have team synergy? It looks pretty good, but I don't have a PS4.

Not in the hard-coded sense. But some characters are more useful without meter than others while others are more deadly with full meter than others, so building a team with a good meter generator leading off and a good meter user anchoring it is a good approach.
