The timeline is that Jason drowned in 57. Mrs Voorhees killed those kids at the beginning of the movie in 58, they tried to reopen the camp in 62 but Mrs Voorhees poisoned the water so it wouldn’t happen and now they are reopening again in this movie in 78 and she kills everyone. She wants to stop the camp from opening at all cost because she blames the camp for her son’s death. I think the end with Jason jumping out of the water was just a dream by Alice. That ending was kind of tacked on at the end for the jump scare. Sean Cunningham, the director said that at the time he had no intention of the franchise continuing with Jason as the killer. Mrs Voorhees was just insane.

Betsy Palmer was a Broadway actress for most of her career. She was a famous household name in the early 1960’s as a panelist on the game show I’ve Got A Secret. She also did some movies with big names in the 1950’s. What made her famous instead of “infamous” was that horror movie fans embraced her part as a “heroic mom” figure instead of a serial killer. Betsy Palmer was actually a sweet, classy, and very funny warm-hearted lady. So audiences were absolutely shocked when the film was released and she turned out to be the killer. She had a squeaky clean image as a beloved game show lady!

Ms. Voorhees caught all of her victims by surprise, none of them really saw it coming. Alice was the only character who had the opportunity to actually fight back and was able to overpower her. You guys should totally watch the rest of the franchise, Jason is one of the coolest slasher villains ever.

Pamela is only a plot twist killer in the sense that pop cultural osmosis has ensured that people remember the hockey masked killer Jason Voorhees being the serial killer in the Friday the 13th franchise, (which quickly translates into the assumption of him being the only serial killer to terrorise and kill people in the franchise.) Friday the 13th the original movie is perceived as relying on a plot twist about the identity of the killer, but that attempt to trick the audience is an illusion, and wasn’t the intention of the filmmakers, as such the twist only exists through retroactively.

What set this movie apart at the time was the fantastic practical effects of the kills by the master Tom Savini. Annie’s throat slash, the ax to the head, Kevin Bacon with the arrow through the neck, and the amazing decaptiation at the end of Mrs. Voorhees. The movie is well shot and made for a low budget independent but Savini’s effects make it a classic. At the time they didn’t think about sequels or a guy in a hockey mask at all. This was just supposed to be a scary, camp/woods slasher. All the things you think of as the pop culture Jason come later

Honestly though, it's much scarier than most other slasher movies.... It's kind of an urban legend that the movie did well ONLY because of the gore (and BTW, several of the kills happen off-screen anyway, but for some reason people forget that).

I like that Roxy appreciated the cinematography and building of suspense & tension. The first 2 movies are my favorites of the series, one of the main reasons for that is I love their old school style and amazing creation of MOOD & ATMOSPHERE! The first 2 are also the only ones filmed in the New England region. Part 2 also has one of my favorite final girls ever, in all of horror.

I love this movie. It's very slow and unwatchable for a lot of people, but I love how they take their time, letting you live in the camp setting, before the "death curse" creeps up on "Camp Blood." This came out in 1980. There were a flood of movies like this, at this time. Halloween lit the fuse and Friday The 13th was the explosion that opened the flood gates for the next ten years. Not only did we get the sequels to this, but movies like The Burning, The Prowler, Sleepaway Camp, The Slumber Party Massacre, Aprl Fools Day, My Bloody Valentine, and so much more. You can fine many of these titles and Shudder or Tubi. They're lost gems, for sure. I ❤️ watching your reactions, and I'm so damn excited to see the Chucky show reactions as well as Friday The 13th Part 2. You girls are in for a great ride with this series.

The great part about people watching this movie for the first time is the twist that it’s not actually Jason who is the villain in this one. Everyone naturally assumes through knowledge of pop culture and it makes the review and ending great because you can see the wheels turning that “wait so Jason isn’t in this”? Then the lake is a final gotcha at the end

After this surprisingly did well, Cunningham wanted to do sequels with 'Jason' as the killer but Victor Miller (Writer) did not approve and wanted this to be a stand alone film, which I would've agreed. Cunningham should've just called the sequels "Special Boy" 😂

Yes, the movie was filmed in New Jersey, though the location of Crystal Lake seems to change as the series progresses. First, it appears to be in New Jersey because that's where the first movie was filmed, then it changes to Ohio in the later movies to accommodate certain plot elements. The New Jersey shooting locations have become popular attractions to fans. Camp Crystal Lake is an actual Boy Scouts camp called Camp NoBeBoSco that is still operating today, but they also hold guided tours for Friday The 13th fans in the offseason. The scenes in the town and at the diner were filmed in nearby Blairstown, and they hold fan gatherings and movie screenings there every Friday the 13th.

Those sounds in the music that you hear was done by composer Henry Manfredini. You’ve most likely heard this piece in some form or another in other random stuff you’ve seen or heard of, even if you didn’t really understand what it meant at the time. The sound is actually parts of Mrs. Voorhees when she’s saying: “Kill her, mommy! Kill her!” He took those words sounds rhythmically into a microphone and ran them into an echo reverberation machine. What you actually hear is: “Ki-Ki-Ki Ma-Ma-Ma.” It is often considered the main theme of the films and you can hear it play out in other cues as well. The music was influenced by films such as Psycho, Jaws and Halloween.

Betsy Palmer was mostly an actress on television during 60's and 60's. She was mostly known for being a panelist on a television show "I've Got a Secret." Some critics were not happy the time as she went on being a sweetheart on television to a psycho killer in this movie Adrienne King who played Alice stepped back from acting for a bit. After this movie came out, she had a stalker. Adrienne King has came back, and has done interviews for documentaries and podcast. Sean Cunningham produced a Wes Craven movie "Last House on the Left" (1972). If you do watch "Last House" in the future, there is a remake that was released in (2009) "Purge!"

The infamous part with Betsy Palmer is in regards to how horror was viewed back then. In later Friday entries, you will notice a certain change in deaths due to the MPA constantly coming down hard in the series. There’s some backstage accounts, documentaries, interviews, and stories surrounding the Friday films you might find interesting. It is an interesting history to explore and learn about especially for that time in horror films.

One mistake people make is the iconic sound people have been repeating it as Ch Ch Ch, Ah Ah Ah for years and it's hard to hear it any other way now but really they took Pamela Vorhees saying Kill Her Mommy in the movie and made Ki Ki Ki, Ma Ma Ma

I think Jason was put in at the end for the jump scare and to ride the same "fear of the water" that Jaws had created for the ocean. Now you can be scared swimming in fresh water too.

Even though it premiered in 1980, it’s technically a 70s movie. Specifically set in 1979. Although I don’t think they paid much attention to the date. Because June 13 in 79 happened on it Wednesday. Sure in the 1980 it was on a Friday, but has confirmed that the year is 1979 in the original. The only months that had Friday the 13th that year were April and July. April actually makes the most sense of when this all happened. All of the victims were mainly prepping the camp to be open for the summer. Plus, one of the characters mentioned a full moon and there was a full moon around April 13th 1979. Or that the Friday the 13th world has different calendars.

What BetsyPalmer meant about being famous instead of infamous, is meaning she wouldn’t have been known negatively (infamous) as opposed to the famous aspect of her role as Pamela Voorhees.

I went to camp across the lake from the filming site for the Jason movies. It's called Camp Hope in Hope, NJ. It is indeed a christian camp😊 and the lake is called Silver lake, not Crystal Lake. We thought our counselors were lying to us because we assumed these movie were made in Hollywood, but we were little kids and we also loved Jason and his movies so we thought we were awesome. Thanks for the reaction guys, you're always fun to watch! My Friday the 13th ranking: Part1(because it's the original), 6, 7, 10, 2, 5, 4, 3, 9, 8. My favorite one is Part 6(solid from beg to end). I believe this movie is shot late in 1980, they make it seem like it's summertime, but you can see the leaves changing on the trees. There are also particular shirts and blouses on some of the cast that are specific to the 80's. Two of the girls had on the "latest" fashions.

If you listen closely, the girl who's hitchhiking who gets the ride in the Jeep calls the driver "Lady" while she's pleading to get out. That's a big clue the killer is a woman.

Yeah this movie is great but all the others are just as good. I’m so excited for you guys to watch this series. I feel like watching older horror films are better cause of how real they make the film. I’m also so excited for my Crewneck to come tomorrow 6/22 and I’m definitely ordering all the colors for sure.
