Critics have always been pretty harsh on slasher movies in general. I feel the low reviews are unwarranted because they're trying to look at these films through the lens of something that they're not which is high art. The fact is they're fun relatively well made popcorn horror flicks. I think both types of movies are valid but one is meant to just be fun and thrilling where as the other is meant to be serious and heavily examined. It would be like going to a really good fast food restaurant and then giving it a bad review because they didn't serve filet mignon. I feel most of the hate these films get from critics is based on their views of what they want these films to be as opposed to what they are.
@thomasffrench36396 ай бұрын
I think the main issue is the emphasis on originality, especially at the time. That being said if you look at the best slasher films, such as The Burning, The Prowler and The Funhouse they do have fresh score on RT. So it’s not like they dislike slashers, they just tend to be really picky. That being said I don’t think the problem is expecting Filet Mignon, they give plenty of movies that aren’t high art good scores. Stuff like the Evil Dead movies, the original Star Wars, the original Superman, and Killer Klowns from Outer Space get positive reviews, and non of them being high art. There’s something else that bothers them, and I’m going to be frank: it’s gore. Gore is the main reason why these film got so much shit back in the day no matter how well made they were. And playing into this, they also didn’t like nihilistic films, which is why The Thing initially didn’t do well. And at the time, these movies seem nihilistic instead of “fun”. You may think it’s popcorn fun, but to them it’s not fun. It just seems like senseless violence, especially considering this type of violence was shocking at the time. Nowadays this might be quaint, but not back in 1981. Hopefully you learned why critics didn’t like these movies even if some were well made.
@bigkmoviesandgames6 ай бұрын
@@thomasffrench3639 I don't think Gore is really what makes critics dislike slashers. hell films like the shinning, nightmare on elm street, even texas chainsaw massacre have heavy gore and were well recieved . I do agree that they may find the films nihilistic but slashers especially friday the 13th were hardly boundary pushing even at the time. I completely agree that critics perceived these flaws and these films were far from flawless ( I do think the originality claim is warranted) but for the most part I think it just came down to critics had biased feelings towards the films and thus they would nitpick these films to death instead of just enjoying them for the entertainment that they are. Don't get me wrong a lot of these series had a bunch of stickers especially with the later entries. But there are some downright classics such as Jason lives and the Final Chapter that unfairly got crapped on by the critics.
@thomasffrench36396 ай бұрын
@@bigkmoviesandgames the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre got mostly negative reviews when it came out, as was The Shinning. But I do see your point. But I think that these film critics just don’t understand why violence is “fun”. I mean how many times have people looked at you weird if you liked horror films. I mean the anti-violence from these critics are well documented, and there’s a video on Halloween 2 from Midnight Moonlight that goes into this a little bit. So from their perspective this just seemed like senseless violence. I’m not saying I agree, but if you look at Siskel and Ebert’s review of The Final Chapter (which is one of my favorite reviews with a verdict I disagree with) and they are kind of right. Now I think their critiques of the film are kind of what make it great. I love the Final Chapter because of how brutally it treats it’s characters that have hopes and are looking for connection just to kill them senselessly. The other films of the series are a lot more light in tone, but I think it perfectly exemplifies their point of view. Final Chapter does have that darkness to it, but at the end of the day it is an entertaining slasher film that uses the brutality to contrast the goofiness and create an effective slasher. But just because I find it fun, doesn’t mean that the critics find it fun. Hopefully, that makes sense.
@bigkmoviesandgames6 ай бұрын
@@thomasffrench3639 I understand what you're saying and you make some good points. I'm simply pointing out that a lot of their criticisms are biased and unwarranted, not all of them like I said a lot of the later sequels in the series are rather lackluster. Having said that I think that if critics at the time just didn't take these films so seriously( and perhaps they couldn't due to their perceived nihilism or Gore as we previously mentioned) they would have been much less harsh on these films even if they still ultimately didn't like them. Thanks for being civil this was a nice discussion and you made some good points.

@@bigkmoviesandgames you’re actually right, and I think that they should have been more open minded in what they were consuming. But I totally understand where they are coming from. If I had to watch like 20 slashers a year, I would probably get sick of the genre too. And I’m serious about that, there was 26 slashers in both 1981 and 1982 which is 52 slashers in the span of two years. I mean I’m only mildly into the genre, imagine someone who was just indifferent to it, they would hate it by the end of 1981. Not to mention that films like Maniac also existed which were really disturbing slasher movies. I think we forget that, because we used to stuff like Friday the 13th or My Bloody Valentine which are more fun movies

Just found this channel. I really enjoyed the video. I never thought to look at the Friday franchise on RT because I grew up on it so I've always known it would be poorly received by critics. I do love hearing people rank the films and why. I wasn't surprised by the 3rd and 5th films being dead last. I reverse them, with 8 being last and 3 and 5 being tied for second to last but I think that's all reasonable. Definitely going to look at your other content.

If you want to make Jgth canon, just think that it was one of freddy's dream demon's the whole time posing as Jason in order to get Freddy some strength back. And in FvJ, Freddy finally gets a little more fear energy to begin to talk again.

I just watched the Chucky, Halloween, and F13 videos back to back. I'm convinced that modern audiences just don't like movies shot on film. The classics like original Halloween rise to the top but look how much higher the ones shot on digital climb despite an obvious lack of quality. I love Jason X for the fun factor but it being ranked basically the same as part IV is wild. Cult and Curse of Chucky and the second and third of the David Gordon Green trilogy of Halloween movies...

When you compare Jason Lives to JGTH, certainly Jason has much more screen time. But the thing about Jason Lives compared to the first five (and really it's that way going forward in the franchise) is they no longer wait until the third act to show him from head to toe. You see him the whole movie. The first five movies, the killer is not on camera very much in the first 2/3 of the movies.

Friday the 13 parts 1 - 3 are the best, from a theatrical standpoint, and from a lore standpoint. If you liked the entries that followed, it’s because the first 3 did it in a way that kept people (and the studio) interested for more. None of the subsequent entries would be able to “stand on their own,” because they all would have gone direct to video. That’s not the case with every franchise, but it definitely is the case here.

I like F13, but I’m one of the few that doesn’t like steering away from the formula (at least the setting). I don’t like the idea of him in space or Manhattan. I’d rank them as follows: 1. F13 part 4: The Final Chapter 2. F13 part 2 3. F13 part 6: Jason Lives 4. F13 part 5: A New Beginning 5. F13 (Original) 6. F13 part 3 7. F13 part 7: The New Blood 8. Freddy vs Jason 9. F13 Remake 10. Jason X 11. F13 part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan 12. F13 part 9: Jason Goes to Hell These are my overall rankings based on the characters, setting, Jason and kills. Admittedly, I find it weird that plot is not one of those factors. It matters enough to drop Jason in space down, but the story can be simple and fun and get a pass for me.
@thomasffrench36396 ай бұрын
That's totally fair. I honestly think that your top 3 are the only good movies of the series. I think Part 5 is bad, but it can be fun at times, and I would have the New Blood and remake way higher.
@CopiousTurtle6 ай бұрын
@@thomasffrench3639 Totally cool. The reason I put 5 so high are for 3 reasons - I love the Tommy Jarvis arc, I didn’t see the “twist” coming on my first watch and the kills are VERY memorable for me. Twisting a belt around dude’s head until it cracks? Stabbing girl in the eyes with some shears and closing them? Flare shoved in another dude’s mouth? Pretty cool. Remake Jason was great but didn’t care for him taking hostages and I didn’t connect with any characters (I really hated Trent!). Shame we didn’t get more. New Blood is really fun! Jason’s look here is phenomenal (probably my favorite!)! The kills weren’t very memorable to me though and the characters were just okay from what I remember (was this the movie with the sleeping bag kill? Might have to take that back then.). Ol’ girl vs Jason though was very fun! I didn’t like her resurrecting her Dad at the end to stop Jason though. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the movie but I just liked the feel or tone of the earlier movies. More of a testament to how much I liked the others I ranked higher I think. I don’t really think my opinion is really the “right” one. A lot of times when I do things like this it is more for me to ask myself what I like more and why. I enjoy the conversation though!
@thomasffrench36396 ай бұрын
@@CopiousTurtle oh yeah, I totally understand liking part 5. If I wasn’t irritated by the characters, it would be really fun to watch, even for how disjointed the movie is. Yeah if New Blood had the kills in tact it might be on the level of Part 2 for me. Jason is just so awesome in this movie, and it just feels like it’s when Jason really “grows the beard” in terms of performance and appearance. It feels pretty generic, but in the best way possible. It’s like before I watched these movies, this is what I thought it looked like. I may have seen commercials for it on TV or something, but it feels special because every film feels so different from the previous one in terms of location/aesthetic. For me after parts 2, 4, and 6 (the movies I would call “good films”) the rest of the series is just personal preference. I just find that the remake is a lot of fun. It’s like a parody of a 2000s slasher movie, and it’s just entertaining from start to finish despite it being pretty bland. I think the opening is the second best opening after Jason Lives, and I do wish that this characters were the main characters as even though they are kind of douche, they are interesting. I honestly don’t care about the kills in these movies and they don’t really shape how I see them (with the exception of part 4). Part 1 and 3 have awesome kills, but I find them boring, and part 2 might have the worst pre-part 7 kills in the series, but it’s my third favorite. Also I never claim to be objective, but I do think that subjectively parts 2,4,6 are “good movies” unlike the rest of the series. I think that quality is generally pretty subjective but that quality and enjoyment are separate things. I enjoy the remake and part 7, but I wouldn’t argue that they are good slasher movies because they have poor writing and bland directing, but they are entertaining. And that’s fine. Not everyone has to agree on quality and enjoyment and it’s what makes Friday the 13th so fascinating. There’s so many different opinions, but most people will not have the same lists as each other. I’ve seen people have Jason Lives and Final Chapter at the bottom, and Part 3 at the top, and I’ve seen people agree with me that final chapter and Jason Lives are at the top. It’s just so much fun to talk about.
