My Grandmother and mother canned so many things when I was growing up, I never ate a veggie or fruit out of a can until I went in the military, and Grandmother would fry me all kinds of pies everyday, Peach are my favorite then lemon then apple, so good, i ate a million before I graduated.

Very good demonstration. That’s the way my mom taught me. The only difference is my mom used dried apples and dried peaches when she made them. Brought back precious memories. THANKS

I'm in Canada and we always called those type of can openers "church keys" not sure how it got that name but that's what they have been called since before I was born in 1965

The church key comes from the knowledge the drinking a beer brought . The key to the truth. Beer cans had to be opened with that can opener because the can was sealed all around and that opener made a pouring spout. Canning equipment companies make the correct lid opener. The side she used is for bottles with non screw caps.

@@lightmarker3146 I actually researched this after and once I read it I remembered hearing it. They were called Church keys bc they were larger & heavier way bk then &looked vry similar to the big keys that opened the church door. LOL never found anything about getting knowledge from beer. Probably what they told their wives though. They got smaller over time &were used for opening pop cans too. The first pull tab hit the market in 1962. Although many pop cans still needed them in the early 70's .The rounded edge was for bottles yes but always used for the canning lids. Our grandmothers and mothers were the canning companies bk then. That is a newer piece of equipment companies hv devised to make more money like everything else they do.

We always referred to the opener as a, "Beer Can Opener or Pop Opener" (mostly beer can) My family never drank beer, or soda, but that's what we called it back in the 60's. We called these pies "turnovers" not sure what the difference is. I bought a dumpling gadget off Amazon and going to try it for the pies....

It was known as a pop bottle opener, it was also used as a beer bottle opener and many years later it was called a church key to make fun at the church because the church was against drinking beer. The beer and pop came in bottles with caps.

I’m new to canning and I did some apples but some of my apples came out of the jars while they were cooking. Do you know what caused that and how to fix it?

Do these freeze well and do you reheat them via microwave or air fryer? New subscriber here. Got tons of new apples to cook with before they go to waste, haha.

I never store my jars with rings on. If you did have a failure, the lid will pop off if ring is not on. Also, the opener is called a “church key”…why, I have no clue!

You can make sweet potato pies also, just boil a few potatoes, peel and mash ,add brown sugar and if you like cinnamon, add a little, butter to taste and texture you desire. Believe me they are wonderful.

since your pastry is basically close to either a biscuut or pie pastry couldn't you just put em on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake em

Rings should never be left on the canning jar after they are processed and cooled for 16 -24 hours.remove the rings and test the lids and wash off the outside of the jars then make a label with what type of food and the month & year you are canning them. Then when you are getting ready to use your jars of food, lift the jar carefully by the lid. If it's still sealed, when you open it listen for the suction. Then you know that the food is good. If you leave the rings on in storage your food can go bad and then reseal. Which can make you very sick!
