Wow, Brian talks about efficiency and that is one of his talents. His ability to communicate and teach in a clear and efficient way is awesome. What a blessing to have him take the time and share with all of us and thank you Phil for providing the place to do this. You guys are amazing.

The main rule, that I did'nt hear, is 30% of line strength. Set your drag at 30# for 100# line...

Good info on the drags…also you have to remember as the spool empty’s your drag goes up because of the smaller ratio and less leverage.

That's not a change in drag pressure... you're just measuring the initial spike in drag from pulling the rod back faster

Another factor in how much drag a fish will feel, is how much line is out. A few hundred feet of braid will add a few pounds of additional drag, if your fish has you almost spooled, they are pulling alot of drag from the line as well as the reel. Put out a few hundred yards of braid and people will be surprised how much drag that line has.

So most of us who have been setting the drag at 25#, pulling through the guides and bending the rod before the line comes off the reel, are actually setting the drag at about 30#? Is that my understanding?

If you set your drags at home would the drag pressure change after your reel has been on the boat overnight?

Close to the end it seems the explanation was contradicting. Brian is referencing the pressure of the drag on/at the fish, vs the drag at the reel. Isn’t the purpose of setting up to define the amount of pressure on and at the fish? Wouldn’t that suggest best to set up through bent rod as it will take into account all the rods variables to set the drag you want at the fish? 2 days ago landed 200#+BFT off the slide and this info will definitely help reduce the debilitating back pain from that 1-1/2 fight! Good info either way. Thanks!

The most drastic variable with drag is the lack of leverage on the spool when line is pulled off. Drag is increased three times from full to empty spool in my tests. This is something I don't hear mentioned enough. Thanks for all the great content!!!

Brian in his presentation has confirmed to me that the drag should always be tested after the line is thru the guides, tip of the rod. Then you will get a true representation of the drag pressure to the fish and on your line. Glad he spoke of Dennis Braid. It would be nice if more people would use a fighting belt, properly. Not at their navel button but closer to their crotch. Also the belt needs to have a pin for the gimbal on your rod.

Line diameter around the spool is ever changing the drag pressure and the inches of retrieve per turn of the handle. The smaller the line diameter around the spool gets the less leverage the spool has to rotate thus, increasing the drag pressure. Any one who's worked at a tackle store and spooled line has felt this pressure at its greatest when the spool on the reel is empty and applied more pressure to the filling spool of line as the line diameter on the reel increases.

To add to what you said as line goes out line drag intensifies the drag on the line as well. 28 lb’s on the reel at a full spool will be over 50 at 1/2 spool but at the fish with the line drag and if they change direction a belly in the line can add more you can easily break 80LB at 1/2 a spool at 28 lbs at the reel.

So spectra 100# top shot 80# mono and fluorocarbon 80# so we need 24# drag but set 28#or 29#drag set?
