Oh @thetake. Yet another analysis of Friends. What's next, another Deep Dive on How I Met your mother? You have over forty videos on these shows, but not ONE deep dive on the original show these shows were based on, Living Single. I wonder why that is? I'm assuming it's due to a combination of a lack of diversity on your staff and the fact that How I Met Your Mother and Friends was more reflective of the American zetgeist, while Living Single's biggest impact outside of being the original archtype for the two shows you love to over analyze can be found in the black community. I'm not saying you're doing it on purpose, I'm just writing this to make you aware of what you're lacking on "The Take". Where is your analysis on Martin? Or My Wife and Kids? Need something more contemporary? How about Blackish, Grownish, Abbot Elementary (though I think you may have done a video on that show, I'll have to check). All I'm saying is. If you can deep dive those shows of the 90s and 00s, it would be great to see you put in that effort on other programs that had cast members that were a little more diverse.

Please do a video on Judy Geller, and how she constantly emotionally abused Monica, blatantly preferring Ross over her, unknowingly treating her the same way as her own mother did to her. Luckily, Monica lets go of her need to impress Judy as the show progresses, marrying Chandler, whom her parents had initially disapproved of, and giving her adoptive grandchildren, as opposed to biological ones.

My theory that rachel was different is because of the impact she had from Monica throughout their friendship in highschool and college. She saw the suffering Monica went through being an outcast and having to work hard because she wasn't pretty. After college they parted ways, Rachel was going to keep up with her spoiled life and Monica lead an independent life. Rachel felt so much respect for her that she felt humbled and wanted to be like her. Which is why Monica was the first person she went to when she left barry at the altar.

I don’t think it’s fair to blame Rachel’s father for everything. Yes, he spoiled his kids and yes, he is an annoying and arrogant man. But Rachel and her sisters also had a mother. She also is responsible for the way her kids are. I mean, she is not very nice too. Remember how rude she was with Monica when she accidentally forgot to invite her to Rachel’s baby shower? Even though Monica apologised a few times. So the responsibility is on both parents. Her mom settled for money but it doesn’t mean she couldn’t raise her daughters the right way.

Plus, he's a cardiologist who smokes and has only bacon and heavy cream in his refrigerator. It would actually be poetic if he died of a heart attack in his final appearance; due to Ron Leibman's death in 2019, if they to do a revival and/or a sequel series, then they could make that the case.

Season 1 Rachel wasn't exactly as bad as her sisters (they were more written as spoiled brat caricatures), but instead, high school Rachel definitely shared a bulk of the personality traits Jill and Amy had. I think that what happened between the events of high school and Season 1 was that, after a life of being pampered and provided for by her father, she was going to be pampered and provided for by another man --- one she necessarily didn't trust and especially did not love. I think that woke her up to the reality that she's never done anything by herself and been someone. While I think the sisters can be entitled, they're varying, and that Rachel got herself out of that mindset by 1) the fear of being committed, and 2) with the support of her friends. If those two things happened to the other sisters, who knows how they wouldve turned out 🤷‍♀️

Honestly, that's part of why I love Rachel's character so much. She's absolutely not perfect and she knows it, and yet she still threw away all the easy life that she had to try to find herself and was able to grow so much in the process, while still maintaining some aspects of her original personality. It's realistic, and it's relatable. She's one of the only characters who didn't feel flanderized by the end of the series, but actually grew and became a better person, but without losing too much of the personality that made her who she is. That's makes her one of the more interesting characters to me.
@lexsummers5714

To be completely honest I don’t feel that Rachel fully outgrew her entitlement by the end of the series but that’s realistic. The way she wanted to sabotage Ross & Emily’s wedding, her unprofessionalism when she pursues Joshua & later Tag (the latter being an example of abuse of power that she clearly learned from her father) and stealing Monica’s thunder from the moment she got engaged (even though she wouldn’t own up to it). She continues to feel that she’s owed everything she wants. Rachel is a mirror of her father whereas Amy & Jill mirror their mother.
@RoseHoodd
@RoseHoodd Жыл бұрын
I may not be remembering it well, but with the Emily situation her first instinct was to ruin the wedding but she let them be when it truly mattered. and honestly, the fact that ross said her name at the wedding goes to show how it's not completely on her bc he was clearly encouraging whatever feelings she had which emboldened her to tell him she loves him, if it was as one sided as people make it sound ross would never have said her name. With Monica's engagement too, she just kissed Ross. It's a big deal for the group but she didnt mean for everyone to find out, Monica coincidentally walked in and blew it out of proportion (from what i remember)

@@RoseHoodd all very good points and Ross is absolutely at fault too. He’s even more entitled but that’s a while other story. Marrying Emily so soon was a huge red flag but again, whole other story. Regarding the engagement night kiss though, sure they *say* they both didn’t want anyone to find out, but they knew it would be a big deal and Monica points out that they did it in the hallway which is far from discrete. After Monica & Rachel argue, Rachel reveals that the reason she propositioned Ross was because she was sad that she was reminded that she wasn’t even close getting married. That to me is taking away from what should be a special moment for her friends & making it all herself. Rachel feeling left behind is a valid feeling, but to me the decent thing to do is keep it to yourself. At least while celebrating the engagement of your best friend. It doesn’t help that a couple of episodes earlier she and Phoebe were talking about how happy vs. jealous they were of Monica & Chandler. Sorry to ramble but I hope that all makes sense!
@lexsummers5714
@lexsummers5714 Жыл бұрын
@@favouriteghost oh yes that’s a good one! Even though Monica seemed to let her have the name she was kind of put on the spot. In the one with Monica’s Thunder, instead of celebrating her two best friends getting engaged Rachel just can’t seem to push her feelings of being left behind aside for a minute & just be happy for them. Her feelings are normal, but I don’t think it’s right to act on them in a way that takes away from someone else’s happiness. She & Ross knew that kissing in the hallway would be a big deal. When she’s meant to be doing MOH duties & send out invitations she later sleeps with Ross that results in them conceiving Emma. And apparently at one point during season 7 she is over how much Monica goes on about the wedding despite her fighting to be MOH. She didn’t seem to want to put in the work that’s required of that though. I will give it to her for not trying to make her pregnancy on the wedding day all about her but as soon Monica made her take the pregnancy test it did become about supporting Rachel again. On Monica’s wedding day… I know she’s probably not doing any of this intentionally but she was making a lot of Monica & Chandler’s engagement period all about her. Despite how happy she claimed to be for them. Anyway just a sitcom, not that deep but those are my overall thoughts on how although Rachel has grown & changed for the better, I believe her entitlement still manifests in more covert ways.

@kedaver263 Жыл бұрын
Your comparison is not fair, you used examples of the earlier seasons of Rachel trying to stop Ross's wedding, and S8 of her being unprofessional. Both my mom and dad, though divorced, are still visibly uncomfortable with my independence and the fact that I’m not looking to settle down by 23 like my sister. We were never taught financial literacy about anything. My path to independence was met with a lot of shame and resistance. Now that I’m accomplished they’re definitely more uplifting and proud of me (to an extent). I wasn’t like Rachel in the sense of having a bunch of friends as my support system. Dr Greene also looks down on everybody that ISN'T his family. I can't really fault him for being horrible to Ross (since Ross's behaviour - and overall treatment of Rachel - is basically a plea to be kicked in the head), but he spends every on-screen moment sniping, complaining and sneering at everyone around him. He also ruins Rachel's birthday by feuding with his wife - the way he belittles her interests shows he has no regard for, or even interest in, her as an individual. So I absolutely agree - Dr Greene is the architect of his daughters' problems. Also I owe the Take an apology! Some time ago, I accused the channel of having double standards, when it came to male and female characters' actions on Friends. Particularly Phoebe's behaviour, compared to Ross's. But I saw some of the other videos - and I was so wrong! So I have deleted that comment, but I own it unreservedly. I know middle aged women like the greens. The dad was a doctor and believed his daughters had to marry rich. The eldest was the golden child because she was “the prettiest” and could get any man she wanted. Despite having an MBA she ended up marrying a rich man and they divorced. She tried to date other rich men but the relationship kept failing. She raised her kids but she is now all alone, trying to pretend she can still live a luxurious life. The scapegoat daughter became a doctor because she wanted to make her dad proud, but her personality is completely different. She is not fake and is so kind and generous. You can also see that her children are much kinder than her sister’s and know that they have to work to get something they want. She is still plagued with her narcissistic sister who demands many things from her and her dad who never thinks she is enough. She should be proud of all the things she accomplished.

Yes, I agree that they're adult so they can make their own decisions. But I would push back on that a little bit because they have been conditioned so intensely by both their parents to value money and marrying rich above all else that while they may be adults, they don't have the agency or the know-how to live independently. No one ever taught them how to live their own lives, they were meant to go from being daughters to wives directly. It's not like they had any kind of positive role models or influences growing up to teach them they could do things their own way.

I think all lead characters from FRIENDS, perhaps with the exception of Joey, have issues relating to their upbringing. Phoebe en Chandler were neglected or abbanded, Monica was constantly belittled and criticized, Rachel en Ross were over-indulged and smothered. True: often these parents did what they they did because they had issues over own. Chandlers father was dealing with repressed transsexuality and Phoebe's mother with severe depression and poverty. Monica's mother had a overbearing mother herself. Can you judge your parents for their shortcomings? Does your upbriniging make you the person that you are? Can you improve and rise above yourself? Should you forgive your parents or is this unreasonable, because forgiveness implies wrongdoing? These are interesting questions. The important thing is to find understanding, reconciliation, acquiescence and peace.

I watch Friends all over again every ten years or so. And every time Ross frustrates me more and more. In the pas I was frustrated Ross and Rachel never got married. I wanted 'a happily ever after' ending. Then I realized I got such an ending with Monica and Chandler but even better because they had to grow and work for their happiness. Today it frustrates me how the show ended with Rachel and Ross living together because of their daughter in a perpetual 'will they - won't they' arrangement. By comparing Ross and Rachel's dad, this video finally illuminated why I feel this way. Barry wasn't Rachel's 'Barry'. Ross is Rachel's 'Barry'. Emotionally manipulative guy who just won't let go and who wants to be in control but doesn't realize that's the dynamic making him and Rachel unhappy. I wish the creators of Friends had the courage to set Rachel free from Ross so she could have found happiness with someone else. Such an ending would maybe even have been beneficial for Ross: he would have been confronted with the consequences of his behavior and per chance changed. Although I doubt it. He would probably continue to date younger and younger women. And with the ending we got he has not one but two victims at his disposal at home, Rachel and his own daughter, to try and emotionally manipulate and abuse for attention and validation.

It takes the consent of both sides for the relationship to work. Rachel is actually proof of it. She wanted freedom more than money, and her sisters didn't.

It’s funny I didn’t have Green or Geller family money but I also didn’t get a job till I was 24 unless you counted babysitting. I do enjoy the Green sisters even if they are flawed. I guess I enjoy Amy more because she and Rachel did end up on good termish lol. I do which was the sister who would give Rachel ski cabins and stuff. I am guessing Amy but maybe she used to be closer to Jill

@@mariaskabardonis8353 at least you can see that you were spoiled and sheltered, that means you have grown. I have a friend who didn’t get her first job until 22 because even though she’s not filthy rich, her parents pampered her way too much in life and it’s hard when you finally grow up. At 22 I had learnt a lot of important life skills relating to finances, the professional world and people because I had to work at a tonne of jobs since I was 17. My friend couldn’t even ask the waiter for a fork. She always says she feels very behind in life now as she’s learning the things most people learn at 17 and she resents her parents for it

Devil’s advocate here. I believe dr Greene is just another victim of a father that taught him that any display of affection was probably a sign of weakness and that men that are worthy are strong leaders and providers. His love for his boat is a very literal way of be the captain of the family. He shows his love in the only way he was taught how, by providing. Ofc this doesn’t justify him and he must work his issues but he is more than we see

I agree with your analysis but you can't blame everything on the father. He too had parents and experiences that made him who he is. I don't think he purposefully "infantilize" the women in his life to control them. There is no evidence of this.

Just one thing: if Rachel Greene was shallow and materialistic before her friends helped her to grow up, how did she and Monica become besties in high school? Monica shouldn't have been visible to teenaged Rachel at all.

their parents were friends, so they'd been friends since they were little kids. Before school. Although, yeah, I do find it hard to believe they stayed besties all through high school. My best friend and I started drifting apart in 6th grade and we were pretty much done being friends by 8th (not enemies, just didn't do anything together, hang out, etc).
