In situations like that, you don't have time to think or question what other people would do or react. You do the best you can with what you know. They saved it.

I was about 12 yrs old i saved my aunt's life that way. She had the habit of tilting her head back while laughing. This time she had a piece of steak in her mouth when she started laughing. Next thing i see she's choking... I banged on her back real hard with my fist and the steak flew out. She told me that she was so sure she'll die that she already said goodby to her kids. I never knew of anything about this lifesaving action, it just came instinctively to me. But! There was a few times in my life when i swallowed liquid the wrong way and started caughing and the person slapped my back with open palm. It burned so bad that i had him to stop it. If i was choking on something solid that would never have worked. You can't put enough force out that way either. A strong bang with my fist saved my aunt but i just know it wouldn't have worked with open palms even if i did it several times....

I run a wildlife rescue here in Florida (Pet Skunk Advocates and Rescue) but, used to live in Burton. Genesee County hasn't seen a case of rabies since 1997. And that was from a bat. Yes, you should always be careful when dealing with wildlife. However, these guys are absolute heroes in my eyes.. Spring is baby season. Moms will come out during the day while babies are sleeping, to find food. I can't tell from the video but, just the fact she got that close to people to get food, makes me think she probably has babies somewhere close. So, not only did they rescue mom, they most likely saved her babies also by not leaving them motherless. I'd be willing to bet she brings them around when they're big enough because she feels safe and will be looking for more food. I'd love to hear of any updates if someone knows these gentlemen. But, if I don't hear from them, excellent job saving her life. Your quick thinking probably saved an entire family and I'm so grateful you helped this poor raccoon so obviously in distress. ❤

I would've tried The Heimlich Manoeuvre. Glad the critter's okay, though. I had one come right up to me when I was putting out the garbage for collection. I scootched down, he came right up to me, I petted him a little while, then he just waddled off. Guess he knew I was the one putting out catfood for the cats (never stopped him from getting any, would just put out more), so he came by to say hiya.

Raccoons are a lot tamer than you’d think! One time I was awoken by the sound of what I thought were my cats crunching their crunchies REALLY really loudly. It was really dark and I got up to see if everything was ok - I put my hands down near the kitties food bowls and pet what I thought were my kitties at first … but then realized “wait… my kitties’ fur is not this coarse” I was petting TWO raccoons who were chowing down on my cats’ food. They had come in through the kitty door. I turned the light on and they looked up at me like “what?” as my cats stood nearby dumbfounded.
