This is a great example of why I rarely watch reactions of more than 2 people. It really comes over as just a casual get-together with friends to watch a movie, instead of being more focused on capturing the reaction ... a bit of a wasted opportunity as far as I'm concerned.

a couple of years ago, a high school in New Jersey put Alien on stage, something that no one else has ever done before. with no budget, they got the art department to make all the props from recycled materials. Ridley Scott heard about it and gave the school $5K to put on an encore performance, so they did. Sigourney Weaver made an appearance to watch the show, and she said sitting front row center, and the alien right in front of her, was damned scary!

"It's nice that the moons are all on the same plane..." That's how orbital mechanics works. Moons (and planets) tend to stick to an orbital plane (also called the local ecliptic), since they formed from an accretion disk when the system first formed, both one around the star, making planets, and smaller ones around the planets, making moons or ring systems. That disk, called a proplyd, matches the rotation of the object it orbits, so it eventually settles into a plane. When something orbits off the plane, which does happen sometimes, that's evidence of something unusual, like an impactor having thrown the object off its orbit at some point in the past, or the object being a captured moon or planet, that was rogue until the larger object's gravity grabbed it (or was yanked away from another object's gravitational influence). That's why Pluto's orbit is irregular, angled away from our system's ecliptic. But the eight planets and the asteroid belt in our star system are all aligned on the ecliptic, as are the vast majority of the in-system moons. TL;DR: Alien showed that correctly.

@@brigidtheirish Hence the quantifier in my original post "tend to." The Moon, of course, was not formed by the accretion disc that formed the solar system that I referenced, since it was formed by an impactor event later on, giving it its 5-degree offset from the system-wide orbital plane.

In my house, questions like, "Is he/she/they gonna die?" or "Something bad's gonna happen, huh?" are NOT allowed. When these questions are asked, the movie gets paused and dad gives a look that could kill. Questions are not allowed. For example, I'll gladly answer Star Wars canon questions....but not "Is something bad gonna happen to Anakin?" That earns you a scornful look. Can't wait until "Aliens" gets uploaded. Wanna see some adults squirm and scream!

"This is like a student film compared with the second one"... what a load of bollocks. I saw the first 3, at the cinema, back to back... and Alien was the one that stood up the most - by far. Aliens, while superficially entertaining on the level of a rollercoaster ride, didn't feel nearly as raw, atmospheric, or accomplished as Alien. Aliens has lots of action, I guess that's why it appeals to vapid millennials with zero attention span

@Jon Engqvist Then you haven't seen many movies! What's baffling to the OP (and myself for that matter) is NOT the fact that these people don't know Sigourney Weaver's entire resume, but moreso that they don't seem to recognize her from ANYTHING at all, including a majorly popular mainstream movie franchise like Ghostbusters, which is arguably far more recognizable than the Alien film series!

@ClassicAdden "Depends on how important total strangers doing their job is." WTF does that even mean? The only "job" these strangers seem to be interested in is 1 they're not even doing well. They need to be watching, LISTENING, and absorbing the information presented to them in order to give a proper reaction. They're far more preoccupied with talking over the film to tell unfunny jokes and make inaccurate and unintelligent pseudoscientific assertions! What's worse, as the OP pointed out, it sounds quite ridiculous that the 1 female claimed this as "one of [her] favorite movies" (1:40) and didn't seem to bother knowing much about the cast, let alone the eventual lead character! Not even some brushing up right before this fully planned recording?! It's only natural that when someone makes statements like that, others would presume that the person is at least SLIGHTLY familiar with other facets of the film! Especially in this case, since the lead is also recognizable in other commercially successful properties permeating through popular culture! No one's expecting anyone to know anything about "celebrities" in general! You inserted that assumption on your own! The only one here who sounds "bizarre" is you! 😒

The two most common bits of trivia about the movie: When the movie was written and casting began, the characters were identified only by their surnames, without race, gender or any other distinguishing features. The scene where Kane (played by John Hurt) dies as the alien bursts out of his chest, the cast weren't informed what would happen either, so their reactions are real.

And the most often repeated wrong fact about this movie - that the cast didn't know what would happen in the chestburster scene. OF COURSE they knew what would happen - they'd read the script already. What they weren't aware of was how violent the effect would be.

This movie is a thriller. Long scenes ratcheting up the tension is that genres bread and butter. Aliens is an action movie. Hence the lack of long, drawn out scenes. It is perhaps unsurprising that millennials find it easier to take the action motif than the thriller. As one of you said: they don’t make movies like this anymore, ie without throwing an explosion in every 15 seconds to keep your impaired attention spans occupied.

The rain was condensation from them landing on the planet. Ice probably formed in the compartment and landing gear. Parker didn’t want to kill Lambert. Lambert was trapped against a wall. Ripley didn’t torch the alien, because it was standing in the corridor, leading to the shuttle. If it was scared of fire, it would have retreated INTO the shuttle, which it wound up doing anyway. She wouldn’t have time to deal with it as the countdown was happening.

Just like in the original First Blood/Rambo movie, this also had an alternate ending that only the preview/test audiences saw. In that ending, the alien actually killed the entire crew; & at the end as a rescue ship is approaching, it mimics the voices of one of the former crew members to draw it in. The Zack Snyder cut of the Justice League movie gives me hope that alternate Alien cut exists somewhere.

After all these years I've only now realized the one technical flaw in this film...kind of, except that by now it's become canon that there's no point trying to correct the assumption that the Xenomorph has "acid for blood", the mechanics of which are never specified in the original film and otherwise just as important a technical plot point; what we don't know is whether the Alien's blood has just that low a pH and the physiology to contain it (in which case the Xenomorph is a highly exotic organism and removing it from the environment it was found in should have instantly killed it!), or whether the creature's blood becomes like molecular acid only when outside of the organism and reacting to air. That would matter esp. in the latter case might've been able to cut the face-hugger off in an environment the creature's blood would not react to, otherwise could have altered the alien's blood chemistry, effectively disabling its defense as well as killing it. If you're watching this with these factors in mind then the lack of accounting for this could spoil the films pragmatic premise.

Ripley gaining a new daughter, and a new life with the soldier pointless. And it does it in the opening title sequence as the movie setup. Sooo depressing, before the movie even starts. The reason American audiences don't like Alien 4 is because it has a French Cinema sensibility. It was made by the director of Delicatessen (1991) and Amelie (2001). Other films that emulate this style are Belle du Jour (1967), The Fifth Element (1997), and Xalerian (2017).

Awesome review! You guys should really have watched it in the dark. You also have to remember that this was made before CGI and all the modern Alien movies. It really laid the groundwork for other similar movies (Some HORRIBLE!) to be made. Personally speaking, ALIEN has always been one of my favorites! It came out when I was just a kid and I remember how people freaked out because they were expecting Star Wars. I remember that the scene where Dallas is attacked was shown on "Sneak Previews" with Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert, back in the 80's. When it eventually came out on the "all-new HBO", my buddy and I managed to sneak out of my room to watch it on Friday. It was awesome! Now don't get me wrong. I grew up a Star Wars kid, but I always loved how ALIEN was gritty and more realistic. I mean, Brett is walking around in a Hawaiian shirt and half the crew is smoking. So much for a squeaky clean futuristic world, right? I'm told that one of their goals was to imply that that the crew was just regular working joes and not some kind of fighters, so they were supposed to be more relatable. Just an FYI: the chestburster scene was apparently done and no one was told what was going to happen. So everyone's reaction was real. Since you did a Ridley Scott film, maybe you can do a review of the original Blade Runner (1982) with Harrison Ford?

Let’s not go too far about the chestburster reaction because the cast read the script. What they didn’t know was how the effect was going to be achieved and Veronica Cartwright didn’t expect to have her face sprayed with blood.

Glad you're doing these. 2 is better than 1 ???!!! 1 is a horror movie, pure and simple. 2 is an action movie. you're right though, you can probably skip 3 and 4, storywise anyways. Personally, I love 3, as it's a return to this movie; more of a straightup tension building creepy flick.

Interesting way to watch the movie as a group whenever I get anyone to watch this film must get them to watch it alone if you want the full affect be in the room by yourself blacked out and then watch it. In my opinion it’s the only way to watch this movie.

Alien 3 is the best and most brilliant of Alien films making it a psychological thriller. It fails for 2 reasons. 1 People love the unoriginal Starship Troopers rip off that is Aliens, and coming off the highs of that film have an expectation that Alien 3 was supposed to be badass Disney Princess about a happy family killing Aliens. Personally I find that idea to be warped, weird, and I think the sequel people wanted would have been an epic cringefest. Reason 2, David Fincher went over budget, so the Studios took the film away from him before he could finish it, and edited together the remaining footage. There is a Dirrectors cut with much of the incomplete footage which is better than the theatrical cut. But suffors from jarring jump cuts. Missing Sound and shots that are incomplete, because the digiital effects had not been done for those shots. But if your a fan of Finchers work such as Fight Club (1999) you can see how incredible Alien 3 would have been if completed.
