For added context, Frieren the Slayer is a title drop. The Japanese title for Frieren is Sousou no Frieren. Sousou means funeral or attending a funeral, which makes us think of Frieren at Himmel's funeral, but it can also mean to send to the grave. So Frieren literally sends demons to their graves. We can see that Frieren is pretty humble in regards to her contributions to magic. She makes no mention of having involvement with developing Zoltraak for humanity, but Lugner says she was a significant part in it. She has also made her variation of Zoltraak specifically made to kill demons.

You pointing out that Flamme is always nurturing saplings reminded me of the ancient proverb: "a society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit" From episode 4 - Frieren: "How's that little sapling going to keep watch?" Flamme: "Don't sell it short. Once it grows, it'll still be protecting this place a thousand years from now." Frieren: "You'll be dead by then." Flamme: "But you won't be." She nurtures saplings, she took on an elven apprentice, and as we learned in episode 7 she founded humanity's magic. She seems to fully embody that proverb. There's also definitely some Prometheus symbolism with her name meaning "flame" in German.

Since it hasn't been added yet, I will just post this great thread from reddit. "Since the anime just recalled the title of the show with episode 08, I will try to explain to people who may not be familiar with Japanese why it is such a big deal, just a little FYI if anyone's interested. The Japanese title for this show is "Sousou no Frieren" which is also the title of episode 08. As you can see there is a short description "Sousou no" in front of our protagonist's name. Sousou (葬送) is a word that is formed by combining 2 characters each with their own meaning, 葬 "to bury" and 送 "to send off". Usually, the word has a sad and grieving nuance, but in some contexts, it also means "to kill/to end". At first, most people assumed that the title is like that because Frieren outlives all her friends, so she "sees them off" one by one. But at this point in the story, the demon reveals that it is actually a title given to her by demons because she has "sent so many demons to their deaths". People were SHOOK when this double meaning was revealed in the manga, it was just so cool lol I saw that English subtitles translated it into "Frieren the slayer", while still badass, it just doesn't fully show how the author played with words in the title, and I just think it's a pity that some people will not be able to appreciate it due to stuff lost in translation. IMO experiencing the realization that the title was not as simple as I thought was one of the highlights when reading the manga. But translation is hard, I totally get that. I'm assuming a lot of people already know this, but just in case, I wanted to create this post, because I really love this show and I'm so happy that the anime is getting so much attention. The anime is doing such a good job, and I look forward to it every week. Cheers."

Another possibility is that he didn't get a good look at her since it was night when he encountered her and he was probably a bit distracted by the rest of the army of demons getting slaughtered around him. Lugner remembered not only Frieren, he also said he had been hit with such a spell before! But Frieren didn't learn Zoltraak until after Qual was sealed. That means the first time she met Lugner was after that!
@ShnNar1000x5 ай бұрын
That's possible, but I don't think it's likely. Frieren was using her magic to kill demons before she knew Zoltraak and Lugner indicates he was "struck by that same magic before." I'm going to guess that Frieren's alteration of Zoltraak bears some distinctive touch of her magic that he recognized. Frieren probably fought Lugner when he was part of Aura's forces 80 years before. The other possibility is that Frieren startng using Zoltraak right after she learned it from observing Qual. If she met Lugner more recently it would be even stranger than it is that he did not recognize her right off.
@Ryodraco5 ай бұрын
@@ShnNar1000x To clarify, what Lugner felt was the "specialized for killing demons" aspect of the spell, hence he felt that same sort of magic rather than it being the same spell. @supos91315 ай бұрын
@@ShnNar1000x Why don't you think it's likely? There is no contradiction in my logic. At the same time, your version has some flaws. Lügner was struck by Fern and there can't be any “spirit” of Friren in her Zoltraak. For Fern, it's a basic attack spell that she learned before she even met Friren.

@@Danny01474 Don't tell me they just hid! There is a flashback, a static shot in ep10 showing the battle between the hero's group and Aura. Naturally, she hid after being defeated. Somehow she got away alive then. Likewise, Luegner survived his encounter with Friren. Demons are very arrogant, and wouldn't run away scared of “pathetic humans”. Only after a fight and defeat. Furthermore, we don't know when Luegner became Aura's Executioner. I can easily assume that it was, for example, 28 years ago. Not only because of his power, but also because he was able to survive against Friren.

26:08 “Sou Sou no Frieren… isn’t that the Japanese (title for this anime)?” Yes, and “sou” is pronounced as “so.” It means “Frieren of the Funerals,” probably referring to how because she outlives the people close to her, she’s always seeing her friends off to the afterlife. But as a double meaning, she’s basically ending the lives of demons by her own hand, so that title works to describe her with a scarier inference (if you’re a demon).

@Paragon_Of_Success5 ай бұрын
@@hulmhochberg8129 I thought you might have a point, so I did some research and wrote a mini essay. Effects of alcohol upon cells. Alcohol has a number of effects, but chief among them is its ability to inhibit the cell processes, which is what ends up killing cells over long period of exposure to alcohol (alcoholism). While I don't know if Heiter was an alcoholic, alcohol still has a major effect upon what is known as the "cellular redox state" (Manzo-Avalos, Saavedra-Molina, 2010). This cellular redox state is the ability of the cell to maintain a constant internal environment (homeostasis). This is done to keep the cell healthy, and is highly reactive to any change (Le Gal, Schmidt, Saying, 2021). Alcohol inhibits these reactions and destroys the delicate balance inside the cells, which eventually leads to cell degradation and death. Aging and cell death. Aging is a process characterised by the progressive loss of tissue and organ function (Liguori et al, 2018) There is not yet any concrete proof as to what happens why, but the generally agreed upon theory is that cells gradually lose function and are replaced slower than they die after a certain age (~25-30). This is part of the reason as to why your physical condition is at its peak at around 25-30 years old. One theory states that aging is cause by the accumulation of oxygen/nitrogen related damages to the cells (Liguori et al, 2018). Eventually, these cell drgrade and die, and cannot be replaced as fast due to damages to other cells inhibiting cell reproduction in addition to other factors. Effect of alcohol on aging. Alcohol inhibits cells, causing damage that sounds very similar to aging. While aging is a cause of many factors, it cannot be denied cell degradation is the ultimate result. Seeing as consumption of any alcohol has been shown to accelerate cell degradation, alcohol is almost certain to accelerate aging, even if only by small amounts. In 2023, a study was published in the scientific journal Aging by the group of researchers Nannini et al that sought to prove the correlation between alcohol consumption and aging. In the study, it was found that frequent consumption of alcohol (like we see Heiter do) has a direct and noticeable impact, speeding up the aging process. Conclusion. It is irrefutable that alcohol and aging have similar effects upon a cell, and to be able to slow down cell degradation would also reduce the impact of alcohol upon the body. Reducing alcohol impact reduces its affect upon the body and Central Nervous System (CNS). To be able to slow down one is to be able to slow down the other. Does this mean Heiter didn't use magic to slow down his aging? No, there is a possibility that this is exactly what happened. However, if he did use magic to slow down his aging, he must have been an alcoholic or prone to binge-drinking to still experience the kind of impact we see in the show. In such a case, he could have lived far longer had he never took up drinking to begin with. Having written this and done all this research, I actually find myself agreeing more with you. It is more likely he did use magic to both slow down his aging and reduce the affects of frequent drinking upon his body. Of course, this all assumes magic works like this. For all we know, it has nothing to do with the scientific explanations of aging and alcohol and just works because Heiter thinks it does. Sources: Le Gal, K., Schmidt, E. E., & Sayin, V. I. (2021). It's interesting to consider why Lügner didn't recognize Frieren the Slayer even when he was standing right in front of her staring into her eyes. I think demons simply don't recognize humans, elves, or even other demons by physical appearance, because that's not what's important to them. What he did recognize, however, was that spell. The reason physical appearance is unimportant to demons is probably because their own physical appearance is itself a lie designed (or evolved) to fool humans, just like their speech. I love Lügner's line "What are words? How do they differ from swords?" Because it perfectly captures how demons think about speech: not a tool for communication, but one of many tools for killing humans.

About Frierens actions when it comes to dealing with demons. I think Frieren held back in the village scene to teach Himmel and the others what she already knew. When she asked the demon why she said "mama", I think it was to show Himmel and the villagers that demons cannot be reasoned with and those words are used to manipulate their prey.

I love the Frieren the Slayer title drop, but, what truly gets me is that, in thousands of years, and yes, thousands, in plural, Frieren is THE one to have killed the most demons in history. I love hoy it implies that over the nearly thousand years she spent alone, she wasn't really letting time pass. She was hunting, and not only animals for food, but demons too, and it only escalated when she joined Himmel's party.

Don't forget Frieren in German means Frozen. It suits the character a lot - she is distant and its like an iceberg - the majority of what she is remains below water.

Well true but as a German i must say: Frieren is more like "to be cold" like in "Ich friere" - "I'm cold". Frozen would be more like "gefroren" or if it is still in the process of freezing it would be "einfrieren" ... so in that sense you are not wrong, but i think that "to be cold" would fit her cold personality and struggle with human emotions.

I wouldn't worry much about episode titles, it seems like a cumbersome way to enjoy a show. Ep 8 is just a special case where the Japanese title of the show is Sousou no Frieren and it's a double entendre. Frieren's never going to spoil you like "next week's episode: The Day Stark Got Eaten by a Whale" (completely fake title dw 😂). There's SO MUCH amazing stuff over the course of the show, you won't be disappointed! My favorite episodes are the slower slice of life moments, but Studio Madhouse went absolutely hard on this project. The action sequences are "technically" similar in the manga, but the music and the animation sequences turn them into such a visual spectacle it brings me back to the first time I saw the Rock Lee vs Gaara fight as a kid.

That it took even demons almost 30 years to completely understand and work around Zoltraak, and how humans turned it into ordinary offensive magic... ... but the most terrifying is how Frieren made it into her own with a twist of adding demon killing element in such a short time after sealing Qual and before meeting Lugner

"Sousou" means "Sender to your grave" in Japanese. It can be translated as "The slayer" though.

I love to think that Frieren the Slayer is what she is called in demon legend. Humankind (and even Frieren) would have no idea about it.
@xorngoh73035 ай бұрын
It's quite sad how her title wasn't translated properly. It isn't a problem for me since I speak and read Japanese, and because it is in kanji it is easier for me because I'm Chinese. As you can see Sousou (葬送) has 2 different chinese/kanji words. The first word Sou (葬) means funeral or the act of burying a dead person. The second word Sou (送) means to give or to send something. Together they mean to be there with you at the funeral or to send off in funeral. So Sousou no Frieren literally translates to Frieren who sends off in funeral, or in this context it also means Frieren who sends you off in your funeral. The most accurate translation would actually be Frieren the Undertaker.

"frieren the slayer" isn't TECHNICALLY a spoiler. The Japanese title of the show is "sousou no frieren" which can be read as a double entendre; it can used in a sense that translates to "frieren at the funeral" or "frieren the slayer." Also, at the very end of the episode you hear the little demon guy say "sousou no frieren," which is translated as frieren the slayer.

Now, that Lügner has finally showed his true colors, please allow me to explain the Names of the Charakters. I don't know if you know, or if anyone told you, but all the Names, or most of them in this show are german Words. "Frieren" translates to "being cold" or "getting chilly". "Fern" translates to "distant" or "Far away". "Stark" translates to "strong". "Himmel" means "Sky" or "Heaven". "Eisen" means "Iron". "Heiter" means "Happy" or "Cheerful". "Lügner" means "Liar". "Draht" means "Wire". "Linie" means "Line". "Aura" means "Aura" as you might've guessed. "Flamme" means "Flame". I'm sure I'm not the only german follower of you two, but if you like, I can translate more if you want. Or you can just look the words up in a dictionary yourself. Anyways, it is soooooo much fun seeing you to reacting to my favorite anime of all time. Looking forward to the rest of the season, especially Episode 9 & 10. Please keep up your amazing content. You are so precious and awesome.
