Very useful info. I would add that instead of removing the ice tray assembly and then finding water in it, you can stick your index finger into the tray to determing if it is dry before that removal.

Man I fought so much with the fridge when I had one installed in a new house I was moving into. For about 18 months it was a constant cycle of trying to defrost the tube. I didn't think of putting a gap at the top though, interesting take! The route I took... I started thinking about how if the tube was copper instead of plastic, that it would absorb heat from the outside case and the outlet over the ice tray would possibly never freeze. So I started wondering about how to maybe convert it to something like that. Then I thought it might be easier to cut a small hole through the case above the outlet, that would perhaps let air get to the plastic tube and maybe keep it from freezing. But then I realized I could go the other way... "internal". I got a piece of 12 gauge copper electrical wire about 12 inches long and striped it down to a single wire. I then fed that through the rubber water outlet from the inside until it was basically flush. In theory this copper should absorb heat from the outer case and deliver that heat to the water outlet, preventing it from freezing. And now three years later, it still hasn't frozen! And I guess as a plus, I get a small dose of copper in my diet (not sure if that is good or not). Fridge has been perfect since then. Though I'm digging on youtube now because the ice tray has gotten really rough on the inside and won't let the ice drop. Looks like you got to replace the ice tray once this happens. sigh.

Don't beat yourself up for not thinking of it, evidently Fridgidaire engineers who get paid a lot of money specifically to think of things like this still haven't. Maybe they should come watch KZbin...

Of all the videos on fixing this icemaker the steps listed in this video is the only thing that worked for me. I have disassembled and used a hair dryer multiple times over the past 3 months running the diagnostics in the menu and using the defrost. It always had the same freezingg issues again. The end of the water line would refreeze over and over. I literally taped a piece of cardboard to the top of the fridge creating a gap like you have mentioned. It created enough air space to keep from freezing.
@_RiseAgainst3 жыл бұрын
Glad it worked. If this didn't work on mine I had a backup plan to drill a hole in the top of the fridge and run the tube externally. (not a recommendation) but, that would get plenty of heat on the tube.

This vid was perfect for me! I confirmed the ice blockage at the source to the ice maker. Picked out a chunk of ice with my finger, a bit of water splooshed out after so I didn’t have to blow dry! The black foam on the casing surrounding the water entrance to the ice tray was swelled up so I removed it. Taped it to the top of casing away from the hole to allow in more warm air plus I’ll know where it is if I have to put it back! Thanks for the vid and further helpful comments!
@_RiseAgainst3 жыл бұрын
Good to hear. If you have to go back in, try increasing the gap to allow more above freezing air, and also go ahead and tape around the fill tube seal to make sure no cold air is allowed up under the seal.

We put a 1/4 bag of ice in the ice bin. And it stated making ice right away. We just bought this brand new Frigidaire from Lowe’s. It wasn’t making ice for 3 days. It was cold, but not making ice. But as soon as we put the 1/4 bag in there, it started working right away! So try this to see if it works for you!

Here's an interesting one for you. I have the Frigidaire Pro French door fridge and also the same in Gallery series. It stopped dispensing water alltogether. I replaced the fill valve. It worked for 1 year and then stopped. I checked fill valve for continuity and no problem. Replaced filter. totally stripped ice maker down like you did here and even left it turned off for 2 weeks. Still not working. Meanwhile I noticed the mount points in the lower freezer are in place for freezer based ice maker are in place. The Gallery model will go in the garage as a beer fridge so no need for the ice maker. I'm hoping that when I solve the water supply issue that I can get both ice makers working at the same time. That would be unique! Meanwhile, after troubleshooting it isn't the fill valve and nothing is frozen because it been taken apart and allowed to defrost for 2 weeks, new filter, this thing is kicking my ass!

Oh man, to be honest I'm more of a car guy. So, I would tackle the problem as if it were a car. 1. Make sure you have water flowing to the fridge. 2. Make sure the fill valve is actually opening. You do not need to have it hooked up to water but you can activate the solenoid and see if you can blow air through it (Not sure the appropriate voltage on how to do this). 3. If water flowed it means the fridge is not commanding the valve on. 4. Replace/fix whatever commands the valve on. This could be the icemaker itself, or the temperature sensor inside the icemaker. The sensor has to be cold enough to start the ice making process. It could also be a wiring problem, but unlikely if it worked previously. 5. Good luck!

Did you figure this out? Im in a similar situation. I’m trying to figure out why water is not going in the ice tray and why it’s not freezing cold in the ice maker compartment. I now have the ice maker completely removed and was able to blow compressed air through the ice maker water line so it’s not frozen. We are also getting water from the door water dispenser so I don’t think the filter would be a problem. Any ideas?

@@philstevens9914 thanks Phil! I may have figured out why it’s not super cold in the ice box. It’s because the fan has no continuity. I’ll order a new fan next. After that I’ll try to switch the known working solenoid from the water dispenser with the solenoid that’s for the water to the ice box.

Quick update. There is a black foam ring on top of the ice maker. After about 18 months that foam swelled up and blocked the warmer fridge air from getting to the fill tube. So, you could remove that foam when you attempt this repair. (edit: it is possible the freeze up was due to low water pressure associated with the country wide winter storm not the foam. While nothing in the video will void your warranty, removing the foam might) thanks for watching.

Quick note on this fix from my research. This fix might draw in too much humidity from the fridge from that warmer air, and pernitrate into the ice maker. Humidity is what causes the rear portion of these ice makers to frost over which is even more difficult to fix and deal with than a ice clogged nozzle. I would personally be hesitant to do this fix. Also side note remove the stock foam, and use a plumbing gasket around the nozzle, and it will perform much better.

That is a tough one. I'm not sure when the fan kicks on, but if the tray is filling with water then not freezing, the fan would be the problem.

If it is making some ice there are a few possibilities. Possibility 1. The icemaker is too slow to freeze the water. Lower temp. 2. The ice maker speed setting is low skip to minute 3 of this video for adjusting kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHfbYp-IYquAl7s 3. The ice maker is filling up then gets longer chance to freeze the fill tube. Question if what you just said is not a solution because of 18 months of swelling of the black foam ring..... Wouldn't you want to remove this video? And I wish these outter boxes would all come out as easy as you made it look 😕
@_RiseAgainst3 жыл бұрын
Great question and I have 2 reasons. 1. I would hate to add a step in the main video that might void someone's warranty (if you still have one) and removing the black foam ring might. 2. It might not be an important step. Mine froze up during the record cold snap we had in February, during this time we had significantly low water pressure and could have been a factor if not the entire problem. This the same time I noticed the foam starting to swell. I'll will edit my comment to reflect that. Also I'll add it takes a bit of force to get the outer box out. It requires an up and down wiggle with a strong outward force. Completely remove the internals before doing that. If you attempt this again remember to use a hair dryer to completely de-thaw the fill tube before reassembly. Lastly if you water filter is old it will increase the odds of low water pressure and a freeze up. They are insanely expensive IMO. I would say this is a bad design by Frigidaire but most I think most "in fridge" icemakers have problems. Good luck.
