The motor for mine stopped working so I purchased a new motor that came mounted on an end cap. Only three screws held it in. There is a flat side on a shaft for the ejectors that needs to be lined up but that was easy. Also, I removed the bar that senses when the tray is full. I just pulled the one side out, installed the new motor assembly and reinserted the bar. It took maybe 10 minutes. It would take 3 next time. You don't need to remove the icemaker for this repair if it is the motor that's bad. This video shows you how to test the motor. I would use an insulated wire instead of a paper clip, it's 120v. Thanks for the video!

Yes! Great video and very informative! Much better than the video's from the "experts" that I watched prior to watching yours. I like how you cover the main point at the very beginning. The freezer has to be cold enough to create ice. My ice maker worked fine for a few years but stopped making ice a few days ago. I did all the electrical and waterline checks but could not find anything wrong. Turns out that my freezer was too warm. The prior cooling level was fine until the last few days when the temperature in the home and opening of the freezer compartment has been increasing. Thanks for your help!

You can check the water valve by putting a jumper between L and V. Then push the freezer door button to close and you should get water to the ice maker. If you get water, it’s a bad ice maker. If no water, it’s probably the water valve.

Also... Try taking the icemaker out and cleaning the tray. I use vinegar or better still cleaning strength vinegar. remove the ice bucket for better access. Loosen, don't remove two 1/4 inch bolts that hold the icemaker to the side of the fridge. (Unplug the fridge if you are more comfortable) Unplug the electrical connection by squeezing two tabs on the side of the plug. Remove the ice maker from the fridge and then remove the one plastic cover held with a phillips screw. I let the tray soak for 15 minutes or so. You can feel the difference in the smoothness of the mold. We have fairly hard water where we are so it builds up on the mold and makes it harder for the ice maker to harvest the ice. Might have to do this every year or two depending on the water mineral content in your area. Easy no cost fix!

If you continue to see smaller pieces, make sure the ice maker is not tilted. Maybe the water pressure is too low. Or maybe, you just need to increase the fill time with a (possibly) hidden knob.

Excellent! Just what I'm looking for. Question, if you can answer: I need to clear my icemaker water line with compressed air to winterize my seasonal camp. Can I short L to V to force the solenoid to open? That would save some time. Thanks!
@Your-Self Жыл бұрын
If you jump L to V on a basic refrigerator, the water solenoid will open. But if no water will run through it, the valve may overheat, not sure. But I suppose a few seconds shouldn't be a problem though. However, if you have a water dispenser as well, it gets more complicated. Because you may have 3 water valves total. And the trick with L and V will not work.

Fantastic video - thank you! Using the jumpers on V and L, I am able to get water to flow into the icemaker. When I run it through a test cycle, everything seems to work EXCEPT that it does not fill with water. So it sounds like the valve works, but is not being activated...is that right? If so, do I need a new thermostat, or a whole new ice maker? Thanks!
@Your-Self Жыл бұрын
When you ran the test jumping T and H, did you remove the jumper when the wheel turned about a quarter turn? If not, the water valve will not be activated. If yes, the whole ice maker may need to be replaced.

Will try your troubleshooting tests. I do have water coming out of the door so I don’t think the pump failed. I saw the blades spinning yesterday so I’m sure that narrows down the issues? I burned my finger on the heater. I will comment next week after I get back to work and test it.

I wanted to make a note for everyone. When you are jump-starting the ice maker, you're bypassing the thermostat. If the ice maker works with the jumper (and the temperature is cold), then you need a thermostat. I fixed my ice maker with a thermostat from Amazon for $10.👍🏼

This is a great video, thank you so much. I have subscribed already. I have a fridge pretty close to the one in the video and same problem. You didn't mention anything about the water filter and replacing it. I didn't do the troubleshooting related to the electrical parts yet. I verified the water supply line is good. The part behind the fridge with the blue cap at 0:55, is this the filter? Also, it's not clear how to measure the voltage behind the fridge at minute 3:55. Please help me out here. Where to connect the wires of the voltage meter?
@Your-Self Жыл бұрын
The refrigerator in this video doesn't have a water filter. The blue cap behind the fridge is the water inlet valve. And to test it, I unscrewed it from the chassis and pulled the wire harness just enough to stick my meter leads for the voltage test. Jump started the ice maker with the T and H terminals, and waited for the scooping-fingers to move to the top. That's when the ice maker sends about 120 VAC to the water valve for about 5 seconds. What exactly is the problem with your ice maker? Did you run the T and H test? Did it go through the full cycle? Did it fill with water? What's the actual temperature inside your freezer? The water filter may cause some problems if it's old and dirty or new but fake (not OEM). Also, the filter holder may be damaged as well if the installation of a new filter was kinda rough.
@TarekFaham Жыл бұрын
@@Your-Self thank you again. I'll test the cycle first and come back with the results.

@@Your-Self I used a jumper wire into the T & H poles and nothing happened. I followed the steps and tried with many wires etc... Nothing happened. I am really blocked because of the drawers and not sure how to remove them and are blocking me to come closer to the ice maker box. I don't have a voltage meter but I have a voltage sensor and it beeps continuously on the black wire at the far end of the box and just above the the N hole. I tried with a simple 120V voltage meter in L & N and didn't see any voltage. You mentioned something about the rotating item is stuck because it's frozen. Can I use a hair dryer to melt the ice from the bottom of the box or inside? Or shall I pull the plug for 2 hours to let it melt down?
@Your-Self Жыл бұрын
If you don't have 120V at L & N terminals (and can trust your voltmeter), the ice maker will not work. So the problem could be with the wiring, not the ice maker. If it's a Side by Side model, look under the freezer door wire harness (may need to pull out the front kick-plate)... the wires could be damaged.

I have a Maytag french door bottom freezer. It stopped making ice. I've replaced the icemaker and water valve. I still don't get any ice and there's no power at the ice maker when I run the tests. Freezer is at 0 degrees. Could it be the Jazz board not sending power to the ice maker? The door switch seems to work fine when I held it during the tests. This fridge doesn't have any door features such as ice or water in the door, just a basic with the ice maker in the bottom.
@Your-Self8 ай бұрын
Typically, the Jazz board doesn't control the ice maker. But if you provide your refrigerator model number, I may be able to confirm it. So is your ice maker absolutely dry, or it has frozen ice inside the tray, but it doesn't harvest? Also, did you have exactly the same problem with the original ice maker?

Great video. So far everything seems to work. But the water keeps freezing in the fill tube. I clear it and let it run, and again it's freezing in the tube. It's a 30 year old fridge and has no problem till now. Plus it's only adding a few ounces of water. Making small cubes when it was working.
@Your-Self2 жыл бұрын
Low water pressure can cause small ice cubes, and the water valve not to close completely. A weeping valve will create an ice blockage in the fill tube. If the water to the fridge is going through a saddle valve, it may get clogged up with time. Maybe the filter is old. RO systems are not good for the fridge due to low-pressure output. Or maybe the refrigerator water valve is going bad... not opening and closing all the way.

It seems pretty solid that the ice maker water solenoid is not getting the signal to fill the trays. You said that that means the ice maker itself is bad? So that signal to fill the trays comes from the ice maker itself and not from the refrigerator's main board? Just confirming before buying a new ice maker. Thank you. This video is phenomenal. I've never seen a diagnostics video that describes the functions of anything as well as you do.

On basic refrigerators, the ice maker controls the water fill valve. But some refrigerators have multiple boards, so it gets a little complicated. What is your Kenmore model number? Maybe I can look up the schematics. PS. Did you remove the jumper when the ejector moved a quarter of a turn? If not, the water will not flow.

According to the schematics, the ice maker itself activates the ice-water-solenoid. First, I'd make sure your multimeter actually works by inserting leads into L and N holes. You should get about 120VAC standby voltage. Then start the cycle by jumping T and H... remove the jumper... insert leads into V and N and you should get about 100VAC for a few seconds when the ejector is at the top position. If you have no voltage, the ice maker is probably bad. You can also manually jump the ice maker fill solenoid by shorting L and V. If the water flows inside the tray, your water-valve is good, but the ice maker is bad. Your ice maker part number has changed to a new Whirlpool W10884390

Having trouble with mine today. I’ll check these tips out. Especially the paper clip cycling trick. It’s making ice but not ejecting. Turned it down a bit more to make sure it’s cold enough to engage the ejection. After a good wait I’ll try these tips if nothing happens. Thanks!

Thanks for this! Is there a way to adjust the cube size? I see other makers have an adjustable screw. Not sure if this type has that option.
@Your-Self Жыл бұрын
If there is no visible adjustable knob, there might be a hidden slot under the white cover. Take it off (as in this video) and use a screwdriver to turn it clockwise to decrease and opposite to increase the cube size. Rotate with about 180° intervals and wait to see.

@@Your-Self Can I ask another question? The tube going from the pump to the ice maker. Should I be able to blow through it if I disconnect it from the pump? In other words, is it open from the pump to the ice maker? The reason I ask is I am pulling my hair out with super small cubes. I found the tube frozen at the end and thought that was it but still tiny cubes. Put some air on the tube and it does not blow through. Could the tube be frozen before it gets to the ice maker.

Do you have a water filter installed in your refrigerator? Maybe it's time to replace it. If you use RO (Reverse Osmosis) filter, it doesn't have enough pressure to completely open and then close the water valve. And that could create small ice cubes and a weeping valve that leads to a frozen tube.
@BillCClinton Жыл бұрын
@@Your-Self I had a RO filter and removed it a few weeks ago thinking it was causing it. I removed the filter for the fridge too. I am now running the water line directly from the sink to the water pump. Now I am wondering if the pressure in that line is enough. I am using one of those taps that attaches to the copper line with the small valve. My water pressure at the door water filler does not seem like it is high as it should be. When I had the RO system it would take forever to fill a cup and removing it I get a little better but not what I see in the youtube videos of water coming out of the door. Today I put about 25 PSI from an air compressor on the freezer water line and could not really feel air coming through it. It certainly seems blocked. That why I was wondering if it was supposed to be open. Adjusting that small screw to allow more water to the ice make didn't seem to change anything either.

@yourself What does it mean when water does not stop flowing into the ice maker?
@Your-Self8 ай бұрын
It really depends on your refrigerator model. It could be a stuck inlet water valve or the ice maker itself going bad. On newer refrigerators, the problem could be with the computer board. When did it start overfilling, and how did you stop the flow?
@blackbeauty448 ай бұрын
@Your-Self its a kenmore. Not sure of the model but it looks just like the one in your video. Its a about 12 yeare ol. I changed out the tube that brought water from the water heater to the ice maker. When I turn the water up it starts to run through the icemaker..the ice maker does work because it pushes out any ice made from leftover water sitting in the tray after I manually turn off the water source.

So I am real confused. I've got this ice maker in a newer Whirlpool. When I test ohm's between L and N it jumps all over the place, sometimes around 6600, other times it jumps up to 12000 and other time it is open. When I check volts I am getting very, very low reading (less than 1 volts). Can't figure out what that could be. Is there some power supply or solenoid that is sending power to the ice maker that may have gone bad so it isn't even getting power at all?
@swiftd03 Жыл бұрын
When I try to jump it I get no response at all. I thought it may have been frozen in place but there is no sound or motion indicating that it is even trying to do anything.
@Your-Self Жыл бұрын
You should get about 120 VAC between L and N... Ohms are irrelevant in this case. Depending on your model, the power to the ice maker can directly come from the outlet, or go through an electronic control board. If you have infrared sensors, they could be bad. You can try unplugging the ice maker wire harness and plugging it back in. To make sure it sits well.

What’s that white plastic flat head screw looking like plastic thing right to the right bottom of the wheel? I broke one piece. Should I be concerned?

My water valve works (replaced new), it gets power (checked voltage). However I found it was clogged with an ice damn and it would click because it couldn't release it. I removed the unit, let it thaw, then put it back in. It no still has power, but doesn't even click on anymore, even when I jump it from T-H. Any idea? (although nothing was trying to move, I also didn't feel the heater warming up, I don't know if it was supposed to at that point or not.) I also made sure to tape flush the door switch.
@Your-Self4 ай бұрын
If you have 120 VAC at the L&N holes and the ice maker is not turning with the jumper at T&H, the ice maker motor has probably died. Most likely, you'll need a new ice maker.

@@Your-Self Thank you! Just yesterday i opened the freezer to find the entire ice bin was a giant ice cube! I pressed the door switch closed and watched what it was doing. It was trying to eject the frozen cubes currently in the machine, but couldn't because it was too full. I have not idea how i got so lucky it switched off just in the nick of time (no ice was in the bottom base of the freezer). Have your ever run into this?

Quick question, does there have to be frozen ice in the maker to tell the thermo switch to close or does the “jump start” take the thermo switch out of the equation?
@UweyBanger3 ай бұрын
I hit the jumper and the motor doesn’t turn, i get the 120V between the N and the MX-N terminals-- bad motor at this point or thermo switch? Heat bar works as well ill add
@Your-Self3 ай бұрын
The jumper bypasses the thermostat. So, the ice maker should rotate regardless of the temperature. If the heater works, the motor could be stuck or burnt. Probably need a whole new ice maker.

Thanks for the video is informative and easy to follow. Question: 1. Should the voltage test show 120 at ALL times? Or just when it's cycling? 2. How long does it take when inserting the jumper? I put the jumper in and nothing happened. And When I tested with multimeter it was showing 6.25 volts. Does it matter that the defrost cycle was running?
@Your-Self2 ай бұрын
On basic refrigerator models, you should always have 120 VAC on the L & N. Refrigerators with multiple computer boards may act differently. So, if you don't have the 120 V, it could be a wiring problem or a circuit board problem.

My whirlpool model GSF26C5 stopped making ice. I recently replaced the ice maker module. I tried to manually start the sequence with T-H but no luck. I checked for power and don't get 120 Vac at either V-N or L-N at the ice maker module. I traced the module connector back to the door connector and found it to be ok. How do I proceed from here ? Is there a "Reset" switch to the ice maker. BTW, Ice maker does not respond to the T-H manual start either. Thanks in advance.

This model number is incomplete. Your refrigerator may have infrared emitter and receiver boards. If one of them is damaged, the ice maker will not get 120VAC
