Wow, that short solo at 1:50ish just smokes, man I really wish he'd played longer and fleshed it out. As it is what a mood it sets, just fantastic. Ed had more up his sleeves than most ppl think, no doubt about it.

Man, I’m really digging these “new” VH songs. Can anyone tell me where they were recorded? Are these from the Sunset Sound pre production demos? They sound live but still polished, not the kind of thing taken from the mixing desk at a gig. The “sound” is very close to the one they achieved at Sunset Sound with Ted and Donn. I’ve heard it said that before they started recording that first ground-shaking album, Ted Templeman had them go in and play live (with only vocal harmony overdubs) everything they had written up to that point so as to find the best songs to pick from. Regardless, this beats the hell outta the Gene Simmons demos. I hope there’s more to come cuz when it comes to early Roth-era Van Halen, the world can’t get enough of it. Long Live the Mighty Van Halen. WDFA!!!

They were recorded at Sunset Sound with Ted Templeman. They were later remixed in 2020 by Brian Kehew, based on the sound of the first album mixes. They were intended to be release ready, thanks to Brian, but it was never to be…

I watched the sunset sound video with Brian. Can you tell me why these recordings will never be released? What a shame. Btw, I recorded at Sunset Sound in 1990. Damn, I wish there were smart phones back then…oh the pics!
@tanneryordan Жыл бұрын
brian said it right in the interview. they started remixing the entire 1977 demo reels right before VH started making “A different kind of truth”. VH put a stop to the remastering because they ended up using some of the demos to write songs for the new album.

This one has an Aerosmith "Train Kept A 'Rollin' vibe. The main riff is very similar.
@Shikta-poobah679 ай бұрын
Aside from a standard “blues in E” riff, I hear little to no similarities between this and “Train Kept a-Rollin’”. The energy is completely different, the tempo is a lot slower, and it’s a totally different arrangement. I know everyone’s ears hear things differently, and that it’s all a matter of subjectivity, but this really is a pretty far cry from “Train Kept a-Rollin’”, and I doubt I’m the only one who feels that way.
@billygreenville592 ай бұрын

Drop Dead Legs was written from inspiration from the song “back in black” by ACDC which came out 3 years after this. other than the tempo there’s really nothing this track shares with Drop Dead Legs..

@CharlesBronson1977 Жыл бұрын
They made four full albums of "not very good songs" with Sammy Hagar. This song would have fit snuggly in Van Halen II, when they were still an actual hard rock band.
@Gratefulman1965 Жыл бұрын
As the saying goes, Don’t hate the player, hate the game. D.L.R. Was never a great front man live, in concert he was awful. Out of time and off key always. Sammy however was solid platinum always. Get over yourself. I was their for both bands . Focus on Eddie!
@Shikta-poobah67 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. It’s not awful, but there’s nothing special or memorable about it. It doesn’t say here in the description, but I’m gonna go ahead and guess that this was recorded during their ‘golden’ era (first 4 albums: 1977-1981), and compared to almost everything else they released during that period, this is *WEAK SAUCE* Still, it’s always fulfilling to sit down and listen to all these unreleased tracks (not to mention it’s all a million times better than anything Van Hagar did).
@mikebozik Жыл бұрын
All of their demos needed arrangement and lyric work. All of their demos were a little rough around the edges. That's where Ted Templeman stepped in. If he had decided this was going to be on the album, it would have been just as amazing as the songs we currently have. 😊 A New Kind of Truth is an example of this, and I love that album.
@Shikta-poobah67 Жыл бұрын
@@mikebozik I don’t know about that. The problem with this song isn’t that it’s “rough around the edges” or too lo-fi. It just lacks the magic that made the rest of their early stuff click. I’ve heard other much more raw and stripped down demos that predate the first album that absolutely smoke this song. Short of a complete rewrite, I’m really not sure what kind of witchcraft Ted Templeman could weave to elevate this song to the same level as the rest of the early classics.
