I have to tell you, I bought the Canon R5 and was lucky to get it when it first came out. It was a retirement gift from me to me. I have always wanted a great quality camera and this was it. I am by no means an experienced photographer and have so much to learn. Your videos on my camera have helped me so much. I continue to come back to them for guidance. I can't thank you enough for helping me and giving me such joy in taking photos. I have yet to try the video but that is my next step.

Hey Jared, the mark on the top of the camera to show where the sensor is located is for when you are pulling focus on a high five or nucleus or other ring system off camera from a monitor, you use that mark to determine focus distances. Coming from a 2nd AC I see my 1st use that mark as a measuring point on almost every shoot especially on fs6 and Arri systems

Jared - Just discovered reason to use 1.6X crop instead of full... I was in the zoo today and wanted to see how I would do with the R5 and only the 28-70 lens figuring that I had 45M pixels to use if I want to crop. What I found out was the eye tracking does not work all that well when the subjects are small. When I turned on the 1.6X crop, the frame was more full with the subject and therefore the eye tracking worked better. Just a scenario when having a shorter lens than you want (not ideal), it might make sense to use the 1.6X crop to get better focus and a useable picture rather than relying on cropping afterwards to a not in focus picture.

Great tutorial. One minor point: Starting around 32:32 in the video you start talking about Shoot Menu 7, IS (Image Stabilization). In that discussion, you show using a camera with a lens that has the stabilizer switch on the side. If someone were following your video with such a lens (lens with IS) they might be confused because they would NOT see the IS menu item in the menu. When using a lens that has Image Stabilization, the in-camera IS menu item will not be visible. You will only see that menu option when you are using a lens that is a non-IS lens. To see the menu item, either put a non-IS lens on, OR just remove the lens. Then, once you turn IS on in the menu, and reattach any lens, IBIS will remain on regardless of what lens is attached (except certain lenses, such as some cinema lenses, IBIS will not be applied). Just thought I'd mention this in case anyone were to follow along and not know why there were not seeing the IS option in Shoot Menu 7.

I know this video is approaching 2 and a half years old, but I needed to throw out my thanks for this guide. I absolutely love the fact you use an external recorder to record the menus in your User Guides as opposed to simply recording the back of the camera the way everybody else does. I used your Canon 90D guide when I got my 90D and I just picked up a new R5, so I'm using this guide as I go through the menus on that. Your method/style makes familiarizing myself with the menus "Fro" much easier.

Great video Jared! For the Film Plane Indicator or the Sensor Plane Indicator, it is usually this is used in film production so that focus pullers can mark out exact distances for talent to be from the sensor. For example, if they put a ‘mark’ on the floor 10ft from the Film Plane Indicator, they know that if they set the focus of their manual focus cinema lens to 10ft and the actor “hits their mark”, they will be in perfect focus.

with the line for the sensor mentioned at 16:15 I'm not sure but a lot of cinema cameras have a similar feature as a lot of cine lenses use measurements from this point for focus and you can use this mark to run a tape measure to work out your focus so might be along these lines. i know the C70 has a hook instead of this line for attaching a tape measure.

@@jul1anuhd thank you! Oh yeah, I was shocked I went all in on the A7R4 and got the trinity of g-masters. Although beautiful glass and beautiful results the 24-70 f2.8 was crazy! Then the internal zooming 70-200 f2.8 it’s in its biggest position full time it didn’t fit in any bag I had. The sharpness, the f2.8 speed in darker situations were amazing though. I think you’ll like that expandable 70-200 f2.8 canon is making, I think will help a lot with the shock of FF lens size a little but I think the 24-70 F2.8 for canon with OIS built into the lens may make that range a little bigger, the 24-70 f2.8 gmaster I think is a little smaller because it doesn’t have ois built in. Yes nice chatting! I hope whatever camera you get you love. If you get the R5 please let me know how you like it! Ive considered the R5, I’m sure it is amazing but I don’t want a A7R4 repeat and not end up using the camera.

Hi Jared, excellent information as always, thanks for that. The focal plane sign is inherited from old film cameras, especially plate cameras, where to obtain precise focus, the distance between the subject and the focal plane, that is, the film plane, was literally measured with a measuring tape. Today in certain conditions, especially in macro photography it could be useful.

I think the reason they have as standard " release shutter without card" is to allow the cameras that are on shops to be tested and take photos without the card, since if there is a card is easy to steal it. But yes, it's the first thing i change on my camera menu, and it would should start with that off, and it should be hidden on the menu. :)

The film plane icon was used in some macro photography where you can measure the distance from the subject to the film. Usually done with a bellows on a tripod. Perhaps product photos.

#igotthisfar - Thanks for going in-depth, of course some of this is familiar but it's great to hear the small tips that you associate with specific settings that I might not otherwise think about when paging through the menus.

I havea couple of questions about the R5 Mark II that I thought you might be able ot answer - First, can I power the camera with a 3rd-party USB power supply? I don't mind spending tons of money on the camera, but their price for a USB power supply to power the camera and charge the battery in the camera is pretty outrageous. Second, one about connecting the camera to a computer. I know you can use Canon's Utility software, or take out a card and put it in a reader, but can I connect directly to my computer via a USB-C cable? I am planning on migrating from an OM1, which allows you to plug the camera into the computer, turn it on and select a special "Storage mode" from the menu, and the camera's memory cards appear as external storage drives on the computer, allowing you to directly access them with your editing software. Can the. R% Mark II do this? Thank you,

WOW it's information overload with all the new cameras. I currently use the Canon 5DsR. I am finding that my focus is soft and looks grainy ... I rely on AF trying to get Taco Bell Sharp photos ... but I'm starting to think I'm missing something. At 71 years old, my eyesight is changing so I was thinking of changing my Camera Choice to go along with the Tracking Modes and looking for clear photos. Every camera seems to be subject priority. I do Landscape (like all Beginners), as well as the deer and bears around my house, plus attend 1-2 airshows each year. What "R" camera do you recommend? or do I look at the latest and greatest model. It seems like the Canon R5 has all the features I need and should be a little less expensive because it is an older model? Suggestions??? No Camera Club near me. Thanks

Made it to the end. While I have no plans on getting the R5 in the near future, I always like watxhing/listening to these Users Guides as a way of learning about features I didn't know these cameras had, or as a way of explaining features on the Canon cameras that I do have. #Igotthisfar

I just acquired the R5 and this video you put out was very helpful. Being that I am a Canon guy, alot of the settings were pretty familiar and basic to me. However there are some new menu items and or functions, that are new, and you explained everything really well. This camera is a huge upgrade for me, and I am looking forward to shooting with it, and tweaking the settings to make it more personalized for my tastes. Thanks Jared

Will you be doing a similar tutorial for the Mark II? It was super frustrating to buy the R5 two years after it was originally released only to find that with firmware updates the menus had changed enough that learning it was often super confusing. My R5 Mark II will be arriving Wednesday and I want to put some time in learning everything about it.

Why is the R5 Top LCD panel showing the last used mode after the camera power switch is turned to OFF? The mode dial doesn't change the last used mode when the power switch is turned off. Removing the battery does fully turn the display.

Why the hell JPEG still exists if PNG is much better and support losless compressing? I oniw it's slower but this can be solved with todays camera processors by using a buffer. And why the hell that camera costs 4k euro? They should just lower the price to 2k euro and they will quadruple their sells.

Going to use the canon R5 with the Canon RF14-35mm F4 L is USM Lens for streaming with ecamm live. Just wondering what settings you recommend on the lens and the camera whether it would be 14 or 16 mm on the lines I plan on having auto focus on without the Eye focus enabled

I finally jumped on the FF bandwagen and picked up an R5, and this video ha been invaluable at quickly getting me up to speed. My only other comment is that I was scratching my head when you started talking about setting up the camera for shooting video, no mention of how to switch the camera to video mode! That took me a few minutes to figure out! otherwise great instructions that even a trogl0dyte like me can understand!

Digital Zoom?: Great video. Am I correct in that there is no digital zoom with the R5 so you have to buy the glass like the RF 24-105? Or am I missing that setting somewhere? Thanks!

I was doing good until you skipped a step as to how to turn JPEG off, and move to RAW, and somehow in trying to figure that out I changed the language to some sign foreign language I don't know where the heck it came from. Now I have to figue out how to change my language back to English before I can begin again!

Great just might move back to Canon from Nikon, Unlike Nikon mirrorless there multiple exposure blended result is only jpeg and not RAW like in their dslr's and their focus for bif can't tell the difference from a bird or a sky.

So I have the l series 2.8 24 to 70. I was wondering if the 1.8 50 mm would offer me much more. It feels like it should be a crime to use a $200 lens over in l series. Although I am getting one stop faster. I mean for 200 bucks I might as well grab it and test it out. What do? you guys think

Go for it! The nifty fifty is a really good way to get into prime lenses, especially because it’s a “normal” lens - it looks fairly close to the field of view we see and doesn’t distort pictures.
