The R3 does not have pre capture, and is only 24Mpix. An extra $800 for the R5MK2 and you would have had a much better camera.
@kpopfanphotos2 ай бұрын
@@nordic5490 very few people even need precapture. You're only getting the r5mk2 if you need precapture or the video features, and even then you could get clog 2 from shooting raw anyways. The auto focus is the same between the two except for that action priority mode which again is another niche scenario. If you're doing more lowlight shooting the R3 is actually sharper and has more dynamic range and more detail once you get past 6400 iso than the r5 and r5mk2. If you're not cropping your photos you're not going to notice a difference. 24mp is 6k. Most people are viewing content on their phones or maybe 2k monitors right now. If you're a wildlife photographer or something oh yeah for sure the r5mk2 is a better camera even though that's in low light a lot because wildlife photographers (especially bird photographers) crop a lot and need precapture. If you don't really need that then r3 is a better camera still. EDIT: Actually the r3 drives lenses faster. Even Canon themselves says this that in the 400mm f2.8 and 600 f4 the lpe19 battery from the r3 takes advantage of the dual motors in those lenses. Not to mention the considerably better battery life from the r3, as well as it has a faster readout speed than the r5mk2 still. There's still advantages over the r5mk2 from the r3. That's why Canon still puts the r3 above the r5mk2 in their product line.

So I waited for the new cameras to come out and jumped on the temporary price discount on the R3. Got one new from B&H for $3,999, inclusive of taxes and free shipping. Smartest purchase I ever made. For me, low light/noise and dynamic range performance plus much better build quality of a pro body are much more important than higher mp, which I find irrelevant for the reasons you stated. And the AF is great on the R3, not anything that would drive me to go for an otherwise inferior R5II or the larger and less ergonomic R1. The R3 is the most comfortable Canon or any camera I have ever handled. I’m 68 years old. This will be my forever camera.

Jared is correct, the ball (type of pitch) may be radically different impacting the image. I would recommend he use ice hockey as his test. The sticks bending on slap or wrist shot with the puck in the fame is a better/more consistent test. It would also put the ISO performance at the test. And lighting would be consistent.

Really appreciate these comparisons. Color differences: For me the one meaningful advantage Sony has had is a setting that allows more aggressive lifting of shadows. A different channel leaked 100 improvements of the R1 and one was improved auto lighting optimizer. i.e. lifting shadows. I notice R5ii has a curve customization function and probably has these same improvements in the ALO. That would explain the visible difference you're seeing. Note that the brightness is most apparent in shadow areas. (Nice). Looking forward to a more aggressive ALO potential. ISO comparisons: Woah!!! If the R5ii can do this, looking forward to seeing the larger pixel R1. They aren't claiming improvements in this area but there does seem to be something there. Maybe it's the algos. Will go look at the images. Rolling shutter: R1 is advertizing about half the image formation time of the R3. Hence, expecting even less rolling shutter. Wait a minute. Mech. shutter has better ISO perf? No kidding. I wonder about E-first shutter. Jeff Cable shoots E-first. GREAT comparison set. Thank you.

It's funny to see mechanical shutter benefiting low light performance now, when 10 years ago I noticed a big difference between Live View vs. OVF shooting on my SLR Rebel. Just having Live View enabled heats up the sensor a lot (the only option on mirrorless). It's hard to say why the mechanical shutter would be giving less noise right now though.

In the end, no one cares if there is a bit more noise or a bit more rolling shutter. If you want the best results with minimal rolling shutter, go shoot with a mechanical shutter, like we all did for many, many years, even before mirrorless cameras arrived. No problems. It seems that in 2024, we have new problems again... Having said that, go out, shoot, and stop pixel-peeping.

It’s weird how our brains work-we constantly seek improvement in our gear (especially when watching KZbin) without considering that DXO ratings sometimes favor older cameras in certain scenarios. Only autofocus and electronic shutters have improved significantly, while sensors have remained largely the same. I have shot with both in very poor light (just once with the R5 II) but it is too soon for me to decide. Also it will be interesting to compare shooting two people (on or off bikes) coming straight at me, both with eyes open and then one blinks to see if the focus locks on better with the R5 II (it seems a lot better than the R5 in that regard) and which recovers focus faster (the R5 was often a pain - losing focus on a bird on a stick and it was difficult getting back to the bird from the background). There may be some photographers who get enough benefit from the simultaneous read to give up the light sensitivity but for most of us I don't think it'll be worth the trade off. Just use the mechanical shutter for motorsports and you won’t have any issues. You can’t get 20, 30, or 40 fps when panning to shoot motorsports anyways because your shutter speed will be to slow. If you shoot with fast enough shutter speeds to freeze the cars while panning, then all your shots will be boring. 12 fps mechanical is more than enough, plus if you could get 20+ fps while panning, why would you want 20 of the same shot as that is what panning in motorsports gets. In baseball, 20+ fps can be the difference between the perfect ball on bat shot, or getting two eyes vs one etc, that just doesn’t happen much in motor sports.

Very nice comparison on the rolling shutter, but having a hi iso test with so much light that you are shooting above 1/1000 is nonsense and it really says nothing about low light performance. Nonthing.

Great video as always!! I wonder, I got the old R5 and I'm always using electronic 1st curtain shutter. Is it OK? (for Aviation, Navy and the moon). Thanks!

I needed this video! I need to upgrade from my 5Dmk4 and stuck on R5 vs R3.. All my paid work requires no rolling shutter and 24mp is enough. Love the pro body of the R3. BUT I do a LOT of bird photography too and 45mp lets me crop so much more. Seems like it will come down to pro body/feeling vs megapixels.. Still undecided 😭

Hello Polin, I use an R6 and experience banding when shooting with the electronic shutter under LED lighting during shows. An example is linked below: [link] Well, when I put the link the comment gets deleted, maybe you have other way to receive links. I was wondering if you have any tips on how to avoid this. I’ve been using the electronic shutter to prevent wear and tear on the mechanical shutter, as I shoot a few thousand photos during a weekend show. Do the R5 or R3 address this issue? Thank you, and keep up the great work!

If there was a ccd full frame by any of those niche companies, they could grab "color science" enthusiasts to prevent rolling shutter other than shilling out 3 grand for those stacked/global sensors.

I don't shoot Canon anymore, but for shits and giggles why don't you try the same test with the Sony A7RIV/V, A7IV, Nikon Z6II/Z7II and see what slow readout speed really looks like. The ball would look like a sausage. R5 is ~4x faster and I consider it slow. I don't think we'll see global shutter anytime soon in high MP cameras. Also, Canon's R1 has read speed of 2.8ms and the bally would look perfectly circular. Given cost and DR issues, I'd rather see Sony and Nikon match Canon's read speed with next gen cameras with a rolling shutter sensor. I expect Global shutter will really only become a more widespread thing maybe with A1 mk III and Z9 III, R1 II.

As a Nikon shooter, I don't think he's defending the Canon. It's one specific aspect of the camera (high ISO and rolling shutter). His main criticism with the Nikon system is the autofocus, which is lagging behind Canon and Sony. If you think he hates Nikon just cos they're Nikon, just listen to his podcast or watch his videos on the Z6III. Where he defends the dynamic range "issues" of the camera.

Should I take a new R5 for 3k USD? I'm having now first R6 and use it mainly for photography. I gave only L glass, few primes like 50 1,2 or 135 1,8. Will I see a difference in quality?
@ppiercejr2 ай бұрын
The R5 is amazing! Leaps and bounds better than the R6. If you crop then it is definitely worth it. If rolling shutter is an issue, shoot mechanical which gives somewhere between 8-12 fps in the real world depending on battery life and settings used. It is so good that I use the R5 to shoot golf in electronic shutter and can count the number of times that a client or regular viewer would notice the effects of rolling shutter on two hands from an entire tournament. For $3k, it is a great deal!

For those that have the R5M2, what memory cards do you use? I have one shipping to me now, and am deciding between the ProGrade Gold series vs Iridium series. Is the faster minimum write speed of the Iridium worth the extra cost? I shoot primarily photo and know the write speeds are limited by the camera itself, but does the higher minimum write speed of the Iridium matter for video, especially the high resolution/framerate RAW+LOG videos?
@KoenKooi2 ай бұрын
The R5II doesn’t seem to be able to write faster than 600mbyte/s, so there won’t be a big difference between gold and iridium. I’m happily using a 1TB gold, no complaints yet :)

Non of this applies if you’re using mechanical shutter correct? No warping with mechanical?
@stepheneckert40062 ай бұрын
Only a global shutter would give you absolutely zero warping w/ a an instant 0.0ms readout but for 99.9% of photography, a mechanical shutter will do just fine at about a 2.5ms readout roughly.
@stepheneckert40062 ай бұрын
It’s all a tradeoff in the end. To really reap the benefits of this camera, electronic shutter is needed, which will give you pre-shooting, 30fps, blackoutfree EVF, etc. However, for the best image quality in terms of high iso performance and dynamic range, mechanical shutter is best. In the end, you won’t see much of a difference between the two unless you’re really pixel peeping…

Is that a fact is I'm sticking to my 90D. One day Cannon going to get it right and they going to come out with a mirrorless camera that doesn't do it and on that day I'll purchased it until then I'm playing with my 90D that doesn't have a rolling shutter
@ppiercejr2 ай бұрын
The R5, R6ii, R7, etc all blow your 90D out of the water in every way. All have a mechanical shutter that is better than the 90D and can shoot at 12fps. All have better low light capabilities, and all will easily get you far more in focus images with no extra effort. Every camera has compromises including the much worse dynamic range of the global shutter A9iii, or the fact that it only has 24 MP. With good lenses, every prosumer and up level mirrorless camera with both a mechanical and electronic shutter is better than every DSLR except maybe the 1DX Mark iii, and that includes all other 1DX models. If it has 2 card slots, 20 megapixels, and eye AF, then it’s a better camera.

@@FireImageFM1 🤡 no 90D gets more than 10fps and they all have inferior autofocus to the mirrorless cameras. The 90d uses SD cards which every one of these cameras can use the best SD cards or better CFExpress cards. For the record, the 90d will only shoot about 30 photos before it hits the buffer, definitely not 37 per second. I’ve used 90d’s with the fastest UHS-ii SD cards and it wasn’t even as good as the R6 which is just 20 MP. Even when cropped, the R6 produced sharper images with half the resolution
