Something to remember: Simga lenses, in my extensive ownership, have difficulties focusing consistently on Canon DSLRs. They've been flawless on the EOS R. Sigma and Tamron have greatly improved in build quality and optical quality over the past 5-8 years. Sigmas original 85mm f/1.4 and 70-200 f/2.8 OS lenses were the start of something big for them. Finally, the build quality and design have gotten to top levels.

I'm not entirely sure the 70-200 gives me enough reach (currently use Canon 100-400) but it might be my best option since games are in the evenings, under the lights and I really need a f/2.8 lens. Not sure there's another lens out there (under $2,000) that's going to match up. Any suggestions??? Thanks for all the great content!

I think the best test for comparison would be to shoot these lenses outdoors because I believe the version III canon 70-200 has updated lens coating and I wonder how it holds up against sun flares/haze over the Sigma. I think anyone looking to buy these lenses are mostly going to be wedding photographers that sometimes shoot outdoor weddings
@froknowsphoto5 жыл бұрын
I used it indoors in a tough lighting situation. You can not assume that mostly wedding photographers will be buying this lens. This is a staple or should be a staple of every full frame photographers bag. 24-70 and 70-200. Following down the road would be other specialty lenses.

Tremendous real world comparison, as usual, Jared. You're the best out there at testing, comparing and reviewing cameras and lenses. Even someone like Michael the Maven, who puts in a tremendous effort with his comparisons, doesn't do truly real world reviews. He shoots "set up" scenarios. A girl jogging on a field is nothing like a bunch of overlapping people moving erratically and competing for a ball (and competing for the camera's AF attention at the same time). I love the way you demonstrate that almost any camera can get the job done, while other reviewers try to convince us we need the latest and greatest camera to capture a good shot, which is utter nonsense. Your efforts are truly appreciated.

Jared - Awesome video, as usual. I have an EOS R with the EF adapter. I'm looking at getting the Sigma 70-200 with the 2x extender. Any concerns for image quality with all this on the camera at once?
@b00gzzz4 жыл бұрын

@carbon63724 жыл бұрын
The lenses from the EF mount should work natively on the RF mount when using a native EF to RF adapter. What will you use this combination for, especially with the extender? I would never recommend a 2x extender. If you need the also reach, get another lens, use a 1.4x or crop a bit. If it’s for sports, you might be better with a Sigma 120-300mm S or Canon 300mm f/2.8L. If it’s for wildlife photography, I wouldn’t get anything less than 400mm. 70-200mm + 2x extender is not a good choice for wildlife photography. It would be better just going for the 100-400mm II or Canon 400mm f/5.6L.

I just bought the new Sigma to replace my old SIGMA which weighs in at 2lbs. 9oz. This new lens is a TANK! I don’t think I’ll keep it. It’s very unwieldy for the fast moving action of ice hockey. Now conflicted between this Canon lens or the RF Canon 70-200 as I’ve purchased and waiting for a CANON EOS R6 to arrive...Two concerns...price of the RF version ($2,700!) and the extending lens when zooming. It’s great to have in the bag to make it easier to carry, but often I have to take photos from behind the glass at games and use a rubber hood to press against the glass. If my lens is extending and retracting all the time, I’ll have to wear rollerblades to keep moving since I don’t want to push through the glass! So, I think I may have answered my own question..get the EF lens with the adapter and have fun.

I had the original 70-200 from sigma, always had trouble to get consistent focus on my 7D. I once rented the canon 70-200, non IS, mark I. consistent focus, sharpness even at 2.8. I kept my beloved sigma for 16 years (because heh, even if many shots were missed even if the af points were ok, i wont lie : i could manage to get nice pictures on a full event), but i moved to the canon mkIII version.

14:20 I actually prefer the look as it is, you can see the hopes and dreams in the audience if you so choose to, and if it was a decisive moment in the game it would have been a really good thing to include. It's not distracting, there's a clear separation, but if you completely blow out the audience, what's the purpose of the game? The audience is an important part of team sports and a good component to include to contribute to the atmosphere of the photo.

Ok Jared. At 17:40, when I look through the viewfinder that single point focus marker isn’t differentiating between the eye and eyelash. I’m not sure I agree with that point. I wouldn’t see how you you could say YOU missed that focus by that little. I’d say the canon prolly hit a little better there.

One critical point I’d love to see covered - how well the Warranty’s are covered and how quickly repairs are made.. Canon’s CPS Service is fantastic and often “on site” at major events. CPS is one major reason for some of the price differences in these products, and why you see so many real Pro’s are sticking with Canon. Coupled with their “loaner program”, their Pro Service means money in the bank.

This is an older video, so not sure if I will get a reply BUTT............ )) I have a Sony A7R4 and no where near the budget to get the Sony 70-200 lens. I have been waiting 10000 years for Sigma to bring out their 70 - 200 but there is no sign of it being released any time soon. (Unless you listen to Sony Rumors, who rumor it will be out this coming last decade ago) I'd love to take some quality Sports (Biking/Skiing etc) and Landscape photography but I don't know which cheaper glass to invest in? You have a video reviewing the 70-180 Tamron, but I'm not sure how that would cope in a sports environment (plus missing out on 20mm feels like it could be annoying) ((That's what she said)) Maybe I could buy the Cannon 70 - 200 F4 with an adapter, but that's still pricey and I might need that better 2.8 aperture in wood/shaded environments. OR The Sigma 70 - 200 2.8 with the Canon to Sony Adapter? Would the auto focus be fast enough? Do you have any future plans to help us mere miniscule money mortals? First off great video! What are your thoughts on buying a lens for a newer photographer when trying to decide between the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM vs. Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 sport. My wife plans to use it primarily for video footage of our son playing lacrosse, but plans to use it for photos as well. The price point difference between the two appears to be around $600 to $800. Based on my research the sport has weather sealing and 11 aperture blades vs 9 blades on the EX, along with some other minor differences (lens length and diameter). Wondering if it makes sense to spend the extra money on the sport version as it would be primarily for sports. We plan on pairing it with a Canon EOS R10. Thanks for your input in advance!

Also keep in mind that these are high end lenses, you're not likely to be replacing them unless they're destroyed, stolen or you switch systems. Over the course of a career, or even just hobby, the cost of a lens of this price isn't that much. Back in the days of film when you had to be paying per shot, you could easily hit this kind of cost in a couple years if you were doing a lot. Developing, even at home, isn't the cheapest thing in the world.

how you're doing i just got my canon 80d and i want a good zoom lens like the sigma 70-200 and it's all black and i see it takes great pictures. i want a few lens but i don't want to kill my pockets you understand. but i'm in love with sigma products and plus it's cheaper than canon. i guess those photographers can buy them cause they get paid i do this for fun and i want to be good at what i do ya see.i want to get this 70-200 f2.8 over the canon 55-250 so i want your opinion i'm going to buy the 18-35 sigma lens the 35mm 1.4 sigma lens and the 70-200 that's a good combination right? i was thinking 24-105 and the 24mm pancake lens and my collection is complete

One little thing you didn’t touch on but I think makes a difference... all of these cameras *nailed* the skin tone on these players. Yes darker skin is tougher to shoot but I’m willing to bet you didn’t do any EV adjustments. Both lenses and cameras handled it very well. All of your other points are solid and it does matter that you can flat out shoot. In the hands of a newbie they may see the difference with the weight and handling of the Sigma vs. the Canon. Plus the psychological effect of spending $2k on a lens makes it seem to perform better overall. Your review cut right though that. Great vid!

Excellent real world comparison, thanks for doing this! Please do always test for focus breathing, especially in zooms. Does the magnification change at 200mm when moving focus from far to near? Sigma and Tamron have some history of fairly extreme focus breathing in their zooms. Nikon's old version II 70-200mm had extreme focus breathing. In practice this matters to some photographers a lot and to others very little. Worth measuring though. Thank you.

This has helped me a great deal in my choice of lenses. Thank you. I have the Canon 6D MK II, and plan to purchase the Sigma 7--200 F2.8 as I see no drawbacks between the Canon and the Sigma, and the Sigma is much less expensive.

Sigma sport 2.8 70-200 or Canon RF 70-200 2.8? What is the best ?

Honestly like you said, these are two greats lenses. It depends on the personal choice of the buyer. Like me, my equipment is Canon since always. Thank you Jarod for all your tecnical informations, I never miss one! Have a nice day! Guy

Thanks Jared, I found this very helpful. I bought the Sigma and use it on the EOS RP. It works fine and the images are as super sharp as you say, the bokeh is nice and the weight is actually ok. I found the autofocus to be sluggish though and I'm still contemplating, if I can live with that, but probably will, because the image quality is so fantastic and the price is right.

I would've like to see some real world photos during daylight where they were shot in 100-400 ISO, Also some video AF examples would be nice.

Jared, you should do a comparison between 70-200 2.8 Tamron G2, Sigma Sports, or Nikon VR2. G2, Sports and used VR2 are all very similar in price, once the Sigma for Nikon is released

Hi jared, i'd like to know how it compares to the tamron please? I am choosing between them for 2 months now and still don't know which one. The weight of sigma somehow matters but a lot of people had problems with the tamron in long term

Hey You haven't done a comparison between this sigma lens and Nikon 70-200 2.8G yet, have you? I really looking forward to it

Good lens. I'd probably still pick the Canon out of the two because it's a warranty it's gonna do well, on the Nikon side however seeing the price I'd pick the Sigma

Do you think Tamron or Sigma better as of today for Canon use
@vizmatter5 жыл бұрын
It seems the biggest complaints from those that have purchased and reviewed their Sigma lenses through Amazon, Adorama, B&H is the inconsistency of quality control. Some copies are better than others. I'd like to see some lab testing with different focus charts, particularly with Sigma, for resolution, aberration and vignetting. For the budget minded this would be a good start, or Tamron.

I don't do lab testing.

Why do people complain about the 6D2 AF points being “clustered”? When you ask what AF point they use they will say that they only use the center AF point when shooting in Single Shot mode. Even when they use AI Servo tracking in a Canon body, still they only use the center AF point and the surrounding 4/8 AF points as AF assist points.

Thanks Fro. I went to two different stores today and just about put down my money to take the Canon home but thought I would watch a few more videos and came across this one. $600 is a big difference. I only want to buy it once. Ultimately, I think we justify what we want anyway but I do like other Sigma products that I have or have had. At the end of the day, using it with my SkyGuideer Pro, the lighter weight does make a difference and I will probably get back in my car and go by the Canon anyway. Seems like the sharpness, clarity, and noise were better with the Canon.

I own the 70-200 mm sigma 2.8 Non IS and although it's an oldy, it still stands its ground!! Great lens made by a great manufacture! I still don't understand why ppl would spend the colosal $$ on a red circle!

Needing a 200mm for portraits, I was looking at the Canon, Tamron, and Sigma. The Tamron was in the lead for a while until I saw comparison images and noticed the Tamron has MASSIVE focus breathing at 200mm. The Sigma has virtually none, so now it’s between Sigma and Canon.
@EmoEmu5 жыл бұрын
Sigma has a strange fascination with making their gear HEAVY. Even here they give their lens a bigger front element than everyone else - likely to improve corner sharpness and vignetting. Personally I'd prefer not to break my back carrying it around, but that's going to be a highly subjective thing. Good to have the option I guess.
@SmallSpoonBrigade2 жыл бұрын
With modern cameras, you can usually fix the vignetting during raw conversion. Having that larger lens does cause issues that are more of a pain than running a filter to fix the vignetting.

How does this new Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 DG OS HSM | S compare to the ~10 year old Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM? Are the results comparatively that it's worth it to save more for the newer one?

That zoom ring placement on the Canon is a big deal for me. Like you, using just my thumb to follow a player coming right at you is so much more comfortable and controllable. That being the case, I'm curious why you think manufacturers will start to move the zoom ring to the outside?
