My wife thinks I’m wasting my time, I bought a psp and spent $50 with parts and flipped it for $102 on eBay but she’s still skeptical and I bought 2 more with the profit. I am trying exactly what you have already done but I have a full-time job and a family so time is hard to come by but I’m repairing these in my bedroom/office desk, I’m highly optimistic and excited to make a go of this! Your story really makes me want to make it happen more I just have to learn to reseat chips and troubleshoot, luckily my 9-5 is a low voltage technician of over 20 years so I know a bit about repairs. Love it man! I know it's tough. With a full time job and a family that makes it tough to find time for repairs but it sounds like you're doing it. I'd guess your wife is scared. If you have a full time job, that's security and thinking about not having that security is probably terrifying. This type of work can be tough to make a full time thing but if you can keep finding the time to do it and keep making some profit she might see that it can work. If you can make enough profit to get her attention that might help as well. Hope it works out.

This info just motivated me to finish this idea I’ve had. I’m a union electrician, but during 2020 I’ve learned all about electronics and woodworking. Construction is rough on the body, and I’ve been loving what I do lately. I just combined a vintage radio, old Bose Bluetooth speaker, and Alexa into its own little package in a wood case. Added some LED’s that react to music as well. I’m making wood LED lights, furniture with electronics built in, and now I’m about to give retro arcade cabinets a try! Anyways, I’m stoked I came across your video, thanks!

This is awesome! So glad I found this. Im hoping to do the same thing. Its my dream to own a retro game store and I also want to offer repairs. Your main channel was a big help in helping me figure that out. Currently I’m not great at soldering... I have fixed worm gears and laser replacements on ps2s, general controller issues like the membranes being ripped, and shell swaps / digitizer replacements on DS consoles. This is huge to know, where you started and all, I've been eyeballing this career for a long time now, being kind of homebound, not looking for a fortune but I've been screwing apart electronics since I was very little (albeit never fixing them, simply just taking a look at the insides filled my child-self curiosity back then. Although miracoulously I did fix an amplifier for my dad somehow back then). I am just looking to get started and bring in a little money too. I even have some stuff that could get a sizable starting budget, like my Guitar Amp that was 3200$ new and since I'm in a small apartment now acts like a very expensive shelf, taking up space in my room. I love learning new stuff online and even have a background in 3 Schools where electronics where taught as part of the main subjects, although that is lying years in the past now. I always fixed my own cars too, I loved it! But at the end of the day, I'm a bit confused and freightened of where to start, even if it's money that I don't loan and is basically just lying around here, getting started and potentially just getting electronics that are not fixable is a scary thought to me. This video brought me a bit closer to maybe just start realizing this thing for myself. Being posted up in Germany though, I have absolutely no clue where to start looking for salvaged electronics. Any ideas?

You can always start by asking friends & family. I'm not sure what you have there for stores but we have stores that sell stuff that people donate to them as well as pawn shops. If you're country allows it you can always try dumpster diving.

Steves videos are very good to learn from, I watched one and was able to get a Xbox one x to work. I was walking home, person was tossing it and a 65 inch Google tv. It's thanks to you, Steve, and My Mate Vince I got into repairing stuff, gaining more confidence and experience with for example a soldering iron I started to repair and mod video game consoles and now been selling a bunch of old consoles for some nice juicy profits. I have a local ma pa game shop and they have whole bookshelf of broken handhelds and consoles (a lot of original Xboxs) that they will unlikely fix. I've thought about buying some fixing a flipping for a profit but some I feel it's a gamble even though they sell them cheap. I'm just trying to exercise my talents that I can repair stuff, but don't want to get burned if it backfires.

When I was younger, I used to solder towers, now I’m 50 and collect gaming systems. I rarely sell as refurbished. If I sell on eBay I sell as used and say in the description what was repaired. There is no license or anything for refurbishers. There's also no official definition of refurbished.

1) I learned by buying broken stuff and trying to fix it. As I got better I started being able to fix more of it. Didn't make any money at first because I couldn't fix most of it...but I was learning. 2) eBay doesn't price the shipping. USPS, UPS and FedEx price shipping and on some items it can make them much more expensive. Try local markets, FB marketplace, etc. Also, if shipping is too much for some items try something else. 3) I really don't remember. My average profit doesn't really matter because my setup was different. What matters is that you can make the profit you need to make for how your setup. Hope it goes well!

Great video man, love the content. I did have a question for you. What kind of space did you have for 250? Was it a dedicated building or attached to someone's house/business. I'm asking because office space here starts at 2000 and that doesn't make business sence quite yet. Any advice on finding a spot in the $250 price range?

That price is pretty close to what I was looking at when I was looking to move out of my garage. I actually found this space through a friend who knew someone that had some small warehouse spaces that had small offices in them. He only used the warehouse part so the offices were just sitting there empty. I contacted him and told him our mutual friend told me about the space and I was interested in renting it. My advice is to walk the neighborhoods near you...look at the businesses and potential unused space then just approach them and ask them about renting space from them. Not sure your situation but you might also just ask friends if they have unused space in their garage. Hope that helps.

That's awesome! I used to live in Canby. Nice area...other than the rain. The best advertising is word of mouth (do such good work that people remember and recommend you). Several other things you can do is start a Facebook page (you can even spend some money to advertise in your local area) and go around to GameStops, computer shops and any other electronics related businesses and hand them your business card and tell them what you do. Most places like that don't do their own repairs and are happy to refer people. Good luck!

Thank you for being so open to share the story of how you started and grew your business. Currently my electronics repair business is: 1) part-time, 2) focusses on the repair of auto shop and golf cart battery chargers (and the occasional mixer amp) and serves local and mail-in repair. I save big on shipping by doing pick-up/drop-off of repairs for chargers (and amps), whereas with mail-in repair shipping really cuts into the profits. More importantly, I'm finding that I need the business to go towards the mail-in model more, since it helps me control when I interact with the receiving and return of the devices. (I have a full-time job during the day that I balance time with.) Do you have any advice on maximizing profitability for a mail-in battery charger repair business?

You probably need to raise your prices. Most people don't charge enough for their service. That being said I don't really know much about your business so that's just a guess.

What is your background? In one of your other videos, you discourage starting a buisness on flipping electronics for those inexperienced with tech. I'm a maintenance technician, I have a 2 year degree in Electrical-Mechanical technology, and I'm pretty good with electrical circuitry, and I want to know just what does it take to start. Side note, I started with microwaves as well, just they were giant industrial ones!

The reason I discourage it is that I don't want people watching my videos and seeing how "easy" it is and thinking they should go out and buy thousands of dollars worth of tools and a bunch of broken stuff only to find that they don't like doing it. I want to discourage those who think it's easy money. If you love to do it and have a little money that you can put into learning then I think it's a great idea. Sounds like you would probably be smart about it. What I did was just buy some broken stuff that interested me. I didn't fix much at first but I was learning. As I got better at fixing I started making some money at it. Giant microwaves sound fun to fix!

I've always been a fixer but never did much with electronics. I basically just started buying broken stuff and trying to fix it....over and over again until I got better at it.

That is what I talk about in this video. I didn't have schooling for electronics repair other than a class in electronics in college. It was mostly just trial and error.

I recently started doing what you did when you started. I'm curious though you mention 180k, what is that look like after cost? I'm sure it's great money I'm sure I'm just curious what the bottom line looks like in this field.

For me it was OK money...about 30k or so...sometimes more. Not the best but not the worst. A lot will depend on your rent payment and other costs like payroll and shipping.

how did you initially start gaining customers, im only 18 years of age living in London, quite good with tech and have only repaired a few iPhones and PlayStations but know how to do it off my head, without KZbin. Im eager to start up a repair business to help me generate a second income during my spare time but have no idea on how to gain customers, create a website as well as how to advertise the business; if you have any tips please let me know; aswell as this if you use any social medias for me to ask more questions which will really help me. Other than that, I enjoy your videos and do find them rather helpful and educational.

Initially, if you don't have much money to advertise you'll want to ask all of your customers to tell their friends. You can, at a minimum have a business Facebook page and people can leave reviews that. If you post valuable content on your FB page that will grow as well. You can advertise in free places like Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, etc. That's a great way to get started.

I was just gonna ask a quick question I’ve been doing soldering for 3540 years probably even more than that and I have the worst luck. We’ve always use Weller. I have tried some of the big, soldering consoles, and they always go dead on me, and like a year, what do you recommend as far as soldering iron? Do you use the console with a heat gun I’d appreciate some help because I needed to get a new one so bad and I just don’t wanna waste another hundred dollars again

How do you go about learning how to repair the internal components of consoles? I've always been fascinated when watching people fix electronics and I personally love to tinker, but when it comes to circuit boards and wiring and soldering I have no clue what I'm doing. Its intimidating but its something I desperately want to learn..... id love to restore old electronics for a living

Thats crazy that he made 70k in his first year. Ive been repairing stuff for 8 years and i have yet to make 30k.. i barely even make 20k. Not everyone can make it.

I know this is an old video, but I'm coming up on my highschool graduation soon in may and im looking for something to start and found your channel and the restoration channel, and I began studying your videos and im about to start my own business right now I'm starting out with controllers since i only have those tools to clean up and repair, but I'm having some doubts since i don't have a main source of income and I'm hoping this will work and profit from this, would there be any good background knowledge before such as certain college classes/ certificates i would need to have to be successful?

How did you fix the microwave? Was it dangerous since microwaves you know...give off heat.

I didn't put my hands in it when it was turned on! They all had various problems...faulty parts, loose wires, etc.

when u started did u have to get a work permit license or did you only need that once u had an office and filed taxes on what u bought/sold? I was wondering if doing work at home like how u started buying things and fixing then reselling to get hands on experience fixing random things before then doing something like doing work fixing things for people living near me and see how that goes and if successful to try to find a small office space to actually start a small business and wondering at what point exactly would i need any and all licenses needed

I just bought some broken consoles and tried to fix them. As I learned more I bought more. I didn't fix most of them at first but I fixed more and more as I learned more.

When I first started I didn't advertise it. I wrote blog posts that delivered good info and ranked well in search engines, then started my KZbin channel that generated a lot of traffic to my repair website.
