The informal apprenticeship model is an age long model amongst the Ibo business owners in Nigeria. The apprentice provides services to his boss for a period of time after which he is given seed capital to start his own business.
Ike describes the apprenticeship model and shares on the characteristics that have led to the model being an informal incubator for starting successful small scale businesses. He also touches on the challenges of this model and why Ibo business owners need to look beyond this model and the need to build transgenerational businesses.

I just ran into this presentation for the first time. Now, comparing Dangote a northern business establishment and that of other Igbo eastern businesses is unfair. Dangote has enjoyed exclusive federal government cooperate welfare geared towards monopoly of everything you can think of in business operation. The Igbo businesses on the other hand always think about the limitations placed on them by the federal government. Therefore, an average Igbo businessman always think about being careful not to grow a business that he would not have complete control due to limitations imposed by the federal government. For example, nearly 50 years after the civil war an Igbo businessman from the Eastern region still travels to lagos to clear his imported merchandise whereas there are four ports in the east that he could have used to do same. But due to the federal government policy toward the Igbo businesses it becomes impossible.

I understand what this man is saying but I will us say something I've observed among us Igbos. Most of us including me just want enough for ourselves and having no risk of losing it and because that's what we've grown to become familiar with. It will end up being a king in your home when you find a good wife who takes care of you like your mother even though I don't know for the recent generation becausethings have really changed. My observations under the sun😅 altleast in my village.

Very thought provoking. Most thought presented is accurate, except the comparison of the growth of Igbo businesses to other Nigeria ethnicities. You failed or omitted the real reason, why Igbo businesses are closed in...; the open Nigeria state aggression against Igbo businesses, not even lack of support, open aggression; in policies and otherwise...I bet Igbo businesses will do much better if they went to other African countries and not Nigeria.
