Until my ancient Nokia finally died a death, I never even knew the meaning of a Smart phone. While my children are heavily invested in Apple products, the amount of technology you can buy in the UK for around £70 from Motorola, and others too, is simply incredible. As an older person, I really can't see the point in spending more.

I am in Australia and my father in law needed a new phone thanks to our 3G being shut down... I found a Motorola reduced down to $138, it is a solid phone with a decent camera, it might clog up a bit if you had a ton of apps open at once but for its price it is insanely worth it. Also it has features many more expensive phones purged like SSD card slot and an audio jack, it even game with a phone cover but oddly no usb c cable. I am glad a phone like this exists which has an alright camera, can handle most modern apps and doesn't cost you around a grand.

8:30 To be fair to Google, they went after the patents because Apple was suing every Android phone manufacturer, claiming patent infringement on technology that they either standardized after stealing from other companies or was just the simple & obvious evolution of how to do something on a touchscreen (swiping the screen to unlock is an example). Knowing that Motorola had most of the backend patents to the infrastructure, Google bought them to defend Android from Apple's non-stop attacks. At the time it was referred to as The Patent Wars. The fact that the end of this happened around the time of Jobs passing, I'm sure _was just coincidentally_ when Google gained the patents to take on Apple if they kept up their attacks.

When I had basic phones I owned an LG VX5400 flip phone and an LG Venus which was my first touch screen phone followed by a Pantech Hotshot that was an all touchscreen phone. As far as smartphones go, I’ve had the iPhone as my only ones which I’ve had the 4, 5S, 6, and 8 Plus before upgrading to a 15.

Dude, I had a Motorola A925 smartphone in 2003. it was a touch screen, with stylus included, and several batteries. running on symbian from what i remember. had a vga camera that could be rotated to face forward or back. it was, clunky. slow, ate batteries faster than I could charge them. but, i do consider it a smartphone. I replaced it with Sony P800 year later. Apple only deserves credit for making the UI smooth...

Everyone thinks that smartphones were the start of the downfall of Motorola. Always expressed as the iPhone, even though Moto themselves were making smartphones before Apple. But the sad truth is that the original RAZR was what nearly killed them. Sure they sold over 130m of them but they literally put all their eggs into that basket. Phones like the MPx200 (a smart flip phone that pre-dates the iPhone by four years) did as well as similar offerings from Samsung at the time but were not promoted like the PEBL, RIZR, ROKR, SLVR and especially the RAZR because people liked the flashy dumb phones. But when that's all you're known for and the world suddenly pivots to iPhones and Blackberries, those phones quickly look antiquated. They had production lines churning them out by the millions and suddenly, the market was gone and the smartphones that they could have quickly pivoted to had been dropped because they didn't sell anywhere near as well as the flashy phones

The cell phone store is only a small part of the store. 1980 they had the best and most popular microprocessor, but gave that away when the IBM compatible came out. Even in the cell phone business they couldn't adapt. They were all about analog phones but the world went digital, crushing sales. Additionally they started spinning off businesses and transferred their debt to them and the spin offs went under. They also sold off their government businesses to raise cash. It's a long and complex history.
