I love how these miniature ecosystems can still balance themselves out and create natural population cycles. It's amazing how resilient plants and small animals are.

In mine there were two big predators that that ate all the scuds, a big ol nymph and a water scorpion. Now there's only snails and they had the last laugh

do you illuminate this glasses with a daylight lamp or do you just put em near to a window so they get sunlight and night cycle ? I would really like to know how u store all the ecosystems and make sure they dont die. Best regards

I don't know what Jartopia does, but other people I have watched just place their jar in a window. After all it's supposed to mimic a natural habitat and normal daylight cycles are a part of that.

In closed ecosphere's like this, do the boom and bust cycle fluctuations ever slow down enough to finally reach a stable state, or does it just continue in perpetuity? I'm assuming that they just continue, but I really don't know.

Such boom-and-bust cycles are abundant in open-er systems too. If you look up "Lotka-Volterra" models and equation systems, you can see many real life examples.

Well we will know next bust cycle. If there are more amphipods then last time then we'll know they have adapted ever so slightly to survive more. Or that the enviorment has adapted to the amphipods presence enough to support a larger minimum.

I haven't watched the first one, but it feeks so weird watching the survivors of a near-extinction event for everything from something that was (supposedly, again, havent watched the og) booming with life. The music helps with that vjbe, too.

Is not like he is creating life, he is just observing how life develops, if all he pulled out a bunch of life out of their natural habitat and put them into a mass genocide situation, but the beautiful thing is that nature doesnt care about life or destruction, it just keeps moving on.

i was wondering how you handle the ecospheres, do you keep them inside all the time, don't they need winter dormancy, do you use grow lights or just keep them on a window sill, what sizes of jars do you recommend, that kind of stuff … maybe you could do a meta-video on these things sometimes :)

I love how after a year in the jar the general appearance is very aquarium-like. The ostracods probably helped with that, but the appearance is just so pristine.

How does the glass remain so clean? Back in my aquarium years, it was very hard to keep it clean, despite all the effort. Too much ligh, too little light, too many oxigen, too few oxigen, etc. all end up in some algae

The glass is clean because he never clean it. The jar is like a mini ecosystem with the organism inside balancing itself. Aquarium is not a natural ecosystem so it always need your attention

So to summarise, lack of predation resulted in overpopulation and a lack of food. This caused a collapse. Give it a million years, and this jar will have unique predators

Well, due to how the generations rapidly succeed, if this ecossystem survives for long enough, it coul have unique sepcies in hunderds of thousands, not millions of years. Truly fascinating, IMO

My son and I started one 6 moths ago. It’s still thriving and we have a baby and momma snail and the top layer of water is completely full of small Lilly pads or whatever they are called.

I set up a chalk stream ecosphere after watching this channel. I’m amazed at just how many species are present. Also have watercress flourishing in the ecosphere which I’m amazed at.
