as a wasian girl myself i really liked watching this video, my grandma is filipina and I wish I could speak tagalog with her. i'm so proud of my heritage and want to feel connected but at the same time I know that i won't ever be fully connected with the culture having grown up in a western environement... but in any case lovely to see you visiting your grandpa's grave, mine is also buried there

another Pinoy wasian in the comments…. Look at all us diaspora babies 🥹🇵🇭 I grew up in Australia but spent some formative years in the Philippines going to school and living with my grandparents. I miss it so deeply and am sad that I have lost fluency in Bisaya (my mum’s regional language). We can all reconnect with our heritage now, there’s always time ❤❤❤

i’m half indonesian and half british but i’ve lived my whole life in Indonesia. it’s so beautiful to watch you connect to your indonesian roots while i’ve just moved to the uk for uni and am connecting with my british ones :’) it’s kinda like watching what it might have been like for me if i had grown up in europe instead of in asia and it makes me quite emotional to think about it because i understand the identity struggle that comes with not feeling like i’ve ever really fit in with my full-indonesian peers yet also feeling a bit out of place in the uk because i didn’t grow up with the same jokes, the same music, and so on like my family and friends did. either way, i’m proud to be both and though i get a bit insecure about not knowing enough about the uk, i am excited to learn more about both of my cultures :)

I'm originaly venezuelan and english but i grew up in bali, indonesia (since I was 5 years old) I'm now 28 and living away from home but its so nice hearing indo. You should learn it, its such an easy language because the grammar is simple, not like french with masculine and feminine and all the different tenses.

As an arab girl who knows the feeling of having blurry vision on the topic of belonging… I really respect the way you handled this video….. like I felt a bit confused at first because of the whole Paris aesthetic thing but you managed soooo well to make me see the beauty in Jakarta as well … and realize that it’s just another way of beautiful 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

i used to visit my dad in jakarta for at least 4 summers and i was scared that wouldn't like it. but jakarta felt so much like home. i'm from india, so the climate, the local simplicities, and the people made me forget the strangeness. i wish i spent more time there.

I have always watched your videos ever since you first posted your New York video. I would always watch your videos of you at uni in Dublin with awe, yearning to move away from home and start a new, exciting life. Now I am in my second year of uni and this video made me sob. I miss my family and what I know as home. Seeing the love and affection you capture towards your parents as you eat dinner with your mum or you watch your dad do the crossword makes me long for that simple care and gentle affection you get from your family. Something about your videos always struck a cord. Thank you for capturing moments and turning them into art. Thanks for always being there.

I’m Japanese, my parents are also literally Japanese. I’m in Europe to study, I couldn’t meet my parents for 9 months. Sometimes I get some discrimination here actually, I am already used to it but, sometimes I’d like to run away and talk to my family. In this video, I feel like warm family love and so happy to see you so relaxed. It makes me relaxed and hurtful:) Thank you for the cute video💌

yess to the artist’s way!! definitely agree it’s like an applied version of the principles explored in the creative act. also had been hearing about the artist’s way a lot & getting into it has unblocked me in such unexpected & beautiful ways. started letting myself vlog again, been playing with watercolors, and have been feeling a restoration around my childlike excitement about exploring my creativity. so gorg for all the cool new mediums you’re wanting to play with, so excited to hear how it goes!

Can you share with us how you felt in Indonesia, particularly with the language barrier, in the next video? I also didn't grow up where I was actually born, so when I go back it is definitely a strange, but enriching experience. I'll feel somewhat closer to a part of myself I didn't know that I had access to, but then also feel the gravity of all the things that I probably missed out on not having grown up where I come from.
