I went through this same transition (Sportsbike to Cruiser) about a year ago. (Triumph Daytona to Triumph Speedmaster) I love my "Speedy" now but the transition period involved pretty much everything that you mentioned here. Especially the forward controls, that was a biggy. Anyway, these days I don't even notice it at all and really appreciate the comfort of the cruiser. (although I had to teach myself to adapt to the reclined position) It's like riding an armchair through traffic.

I have the same issue, as I’ve been on more sport bikes than cruisers. Because of family reasons I have not ridden, full time for many years, but this weekend I will have delivered to me, 😢my first and last motorcycle, a 2013 Triumph Thunderbird ABS and believe I will experience most of what you have described in this video. I will turn 67 this June and hope to have many years ahead of me to enjoy the open road. Thanks

Great video. I chose the Triumph T120 (same engine, transmission) for the issues you have with the Speedmaster. I then raised the shocks by 3 inches, added a few inches to the seat, and added Motone handlebar risers, raising the seat height to about 34 inches, better for my 6'3" height. I installed an x-pipe (replacing the catalytic converter,) british customs predator pro exhaust, custom tune, pulls like a freight train. I sit up straight, see over all traffic, blow past anything, easy to stretch.
@TheSpeedmasterRick Жыл бұрын
What exactly did you do to raise the shocks 3 inches? Just curious. And did it effect the handling and traction?

I came from a Z900 to the T Bobber, which is very similar to the Speedmaster. Again it’s relaxed up to 60mph, but gets tiring on the Motorway/Freeway. I fitted a Givi touring screen and now I can cruise at any speed all day. Yes it changes the looks, but for higher speeds and for the poor winter weather it’s a necessary upgrade. The screen can be removed easily for slower riding in the summer.

Hi, similar story. Your VFR looks just like my '97. I bought a Bonneville Bobber a month ago. I was going to sell the Honda, but I decided to keep both bikes in the end. As I am now at the more mature end of life, the Bobber is far easier to get on and off. I, too, had the feet problem, couldn't seem to find the right position, just didn't feel right after the Honda. Haven't really riden the Triumph much as it is freezing here in the UK, but I am glad I'm not the only one doing the feet paddle. Hopefully get more used to it in springtime.

Hi from the UK!! As a Speedmaster owner I found your videos very entertaining with, dare I say it, a unique American flavour! I swopped my Pan Euro ST1300 for my 2019 Speedmaster and have never looked back; it put a smile back on my face and my riding enjoyment increased dramatically. I ride all year round and at the age of 72 (having been riding since 1973) with increasing arthritis, I can easily 'handle' this bike. The low seat hight and lovely beach bars make you feel you're sitting 'in' the bike not on it. On our increasingly congested and speed restricted roads here in the UK, the relaxed riding style it engenders is idea with, as you correctly point out, bags of torque just where you need it. A great bike which I can throughly recommend. Best wishes from the UK and safe riding, Chris

Great video's. A small cockpit screen alters the buffeting as in raising the wind up to shoulder level. Now i must say that it would be such a shame if you didn't find a dealer who will let you get behind the Triumph Long haul screen because its fantastic and absolute quality as is usual for Triumph. Cosmetically all speedmaster owners might differ in their opinions. I think the bikes look fantastic as they are but also think the screen detracts from the bike by only about 5% and depending what your ride is on a given day, it takes about 5 seconds to take it off and 5 seconds to put back on again. Actually, I can slightly raise my butt of the seat of my 2018 Speedmaster by pulling back on the handlebars slightly and standing up. It's not much of a raise, but it does avoid hitting my backside too hard on the seat when hitting a bump.

I've only ridden cruiser style, having never ridden a sport bike, I enjoyed the comparisons, gave me a perspective of the sport bike that, since it's not my thing, never really thought about or considered. Also liked the positive take on why you might like either one what the differences are. Every bike style has its pros and cons, and trade offs, it boils down to preferences. For me, so long as you enjoy your ride and the bike you do it on, that is what matters. Your final take on Zen Experience... that's... why I ride. Thanks for the content.
@bobh2201 Жыл бұрын
OK, I have watched your two videos on the Speedmaster because I love Triumph cruisers and wanted to hear your take. I have owned a Bonneville (in the 60s) and a Bonneville America. I understand your experiences. Most of your problems can be solved by adding the following to your bike floor boards, windscreen, Highway pegs, back rest. Get a wind screen short enough so that you look about two inches over the top of screen, not through it! It will not bother you at all. Plus, as I am sure you know, you should not look down at the ground while riding. You should look as far ahead as you can see to avoid problems. With the wind screen you can ride in a downpour at highway speeds and hardly get your rain gear wet. It will also save your upper body and face from large bugs and gravel. Two days ago, I rode 680 miles in one day from Shasta Lake, CA, to Cheney, Washington straight through in 40° weather with rain for about 300 miles and a little snow. Without the wind screen, no way. My rain suit hardly got wet! The back rest will even allow you to stand up, while leaning on it, if you see a bump coming. I have been riding for 63 years and am not nearly in as good shape as you are. The back rest will also help you in controlling the torque. I have enjoyed your videos and your honesty.😊 Maybe these comments will help you enjoy cruising and your wonderful bike even more.

Great Video on the new bike. That was a pretty big call to just dive right in on a totally different bike like that. I also had a VFR but the 700 interceptor and now ride a 2003 Triumph Daytona which I have owned for over 15 years. Last year I imported an upright handle bar kit and triple tree to basically turn it into a speed Triple riding position But like you said the jarring in the back from sitting up right even with the legs in the same place is not good , And I have a bad back so long story short I have gone back to the factory set up and am much more happy. It really was amazing how different the whole riding experience changed, cornering was weird, the wider bars changed the steering , I actually didn't feel that safe. Just shows even tiny adjustments to the geometry of the riding position makes a big difference. Cheers from New Zealand

Good video and comments! Thank you! I've driven cruisers for over 30 years, so it was interesting to hear your perspective coming from sports bikes. I'm about your size and I'll stand and stretch at a stoplight for a few moments if I need to. I've had much larger bikes, and this one is perfectly sized as far as my needs. I do have two shields depending on my riding. For touring, I put on a 22" Madstad quick release screen. For around town, I like the quick-release Slipstream Mini-HD Police Screen. It has that nice retro vibe that suits the bike-- and gives enough protection for days where I might be going at faster speeds. I've read from Triumph that this bike (as well as the Bobber) are not electronically speed limited--at least not in the United States. I've gone 110 in 5th gear while still pulling hard. I had to shut it down because of traffic, so in 6th it should easily hit 120-125. I've seen reports of the Bobber reaching 120mph, and it's got the identical engine and tuning. Since that time I had the cat removed and replaced with an x-pipe. This cuts weight and lets the engine gain power and run cooler. Also, I added high-flow air filters from DNA, which allow about 40 percent more air flow. The difference in power is noticeable, and probably up a good 10% from stock. A lot of people will be happy with the Speedmaster's power as is. One of the things I like about this bike is that it's great for making mods--and lots of mods are available for it, and the Bobber and Bonneville line in general. Over the past two years, I've made a lot of functional mods (such as raising the handlebars and getting a Corbin seat), louder horn, extended highway pegs, windshields, saddlebags, x-pipe, and so on. For me, that's part of the fun. Enjoy the ride, and I look forward to hearing your further comments about the bike and your cruising experience.

Thank you very much for the informative response. I might have to check out some of your mods, including the windshield, but I am so so hesitant to do anything with the windshield. However, if it is truly quick-release, that might be an option

@TheSpeedmasterRick Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. I might just do that in the future as I will probably be looking to upgrade my 'touring functionality', and it seems the Road and Highway King have pretty steep rake angles (compared to what I was expecting) and I like that aspect - though I am still not a big fan of the company itself. Triumph on the other hand, I like a s a company, but the Thunderbird rake and weight is far greater than I wanted for my 'cruiser'.

If you have a desire for more information about those upgrades/improvements, perhaps there is a way we could manage to communicate by phone. I also own/ride a 2022 Triumph 900 GT-and that would require a second phone call if I were to share all that’s been accomplished there😂…also a phenomenal bike to ride in its own right. Again, thanks for your rad report👍

zest-zen blend? I like that. In hindsight, I might have used that phrase instead. And a little spooky, coincidentally, and this will probably be one of my next two videos, I am also looking now to maybe get the Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro. So I may take you up on that phone call. Are you in the US or oversees?

The first time I ever rode a cruiser (a H-D 48) I was expecting something to compensate for the lack of performance like comfort, I couldn't have been more wrong, the feet forwards position to me is like a torture wrack and that made my then GSX-R750 feel like a comfy chair.

Thanks for this video, very informative with stuff most of us probably never consider. I am considering moving to a cruiser and also love the Speedmaster. The one thing no one ever seems to address in their videos regarding cruisers in the change in riding style one has to make coming fm sports bikes. I keep getting told you have to change the way you ride due to less lean angle. What are your thoughts on this please? Keep the vids coming, love your content. 👍😉
@TheSpeedmasterRick Жыл бұрын
Hmmm. That's a tough question to answer because it depends on how you ride now. If you are an 'aggressive' driver, which I can be at times, then yes, you have to slow down. But it really depends on how much you lean the bike. I can corner at 35 mph plus going about 15 mph over the speed limit and not scrape the pegs. However, I dip my bike sometimes (counter stear/ counter balance) hitting round abouts or making left / right turns. That's when I really notice it. However, because I am leaned back (vs being tilted forward on the sportbike) I don't find myself 'attacking the road' or driving very aggressively. I BELEIVE this is due to the relaxed state I am in on the Speedmaster, I don't have the urge to drive aggressively. Having said that, if I want to punch it from time to time, I open up the throttle and it will fly. --- Now if you do not drive aggressively, you should be fine. -- Maybe take one for a test drive and see?

Interesting vid .Never been able to get my head around the forward-control design , so never tried one ! The Triumph American's are always a K or-so cheaper than the second-hand Bonneville in NZ, one that tempted-me was 2.5k ! Still didn't do it . Dave nz

I understand; I was hesitant too. It took me a few years to make this jump; and I did it because I found the Speedmaster, otherwise I would still probably be looking. For me, as for the America, although I think they look nice, I wanted something bigger (engine-wise) and with a much steeper rake angle to handle better. The America is over 33 degrees, so not really the bike for me. But so far, and time will tell, I am impressed with Triumph's quality. Thanks for watching.

you can start it in 1st gear. as long as the clutch is in and kickstand is up. love the Speedmaster.
@TheSpeedmasterRick Жыл бұрын
Yes, you're correct. I worded it poorly, I meant to imply as long as the kickstand is up. If the kickstand is down, like I accidentally knocked it down, it will not start in first gear. With the side stand down, it has to be in neutral and cannot be in any gear, or it won't start. I was not used to that
@rickjones507 Жыл бұрын
@@TheSpeedmasterRick I do like the feature even though it takes a bit of getting used to. The focus is on safety. I had an Indian Scout previously, and you could ride away with the kickstand down. Not good.

Great video. I have been considering the Speedmaster. I haven't been to the dealership to look at one yet. I currently have a cruiser and you gave me lots to think about. Currently have floorboards and they are more down then forward. In 2005 I looked at a Honda VT1000 that had those type of forward pegs and they felt awkward to me (almost like a chopper) and understand what you were saying about putting your feet down. With that forward peg style it may not right for me (but just have to go and try it out I guess to be sure.) Not being able to start the bike in gear if you have the clutch in was a surprise too. Thanks for the candid review. BTW...at highway speeds is there any vibration on the bike (other than the wind buffering)?
@TheSpeedmasterRick Жыл бұрын
Just a slight clarification - you can't start the bike in gear with the clutch in when the kickstand is down. If the kick stand is up, you can start the bike in gear with the clutch pulled in. And as far as vibrations go on the highway, I did not notice anything like that. Either it is that smooth or because of the wind blasting me (again, I do not have a windscreen on it), maybe I didn't notice any vibrations :)
@pcthayer Жыл бұрын
@@TheSpeedmasterRick That makes sense then, you can start the bike in gear with the clutch in....just not when the kickstand is down...think all bikes are like that now for safety reasons. (Years ago an acquaintance had a Kawa 500 (2 stroke), took off with the kickstand down and crashed and died.)

It actually doesn’t look too small, it has a classic aesthetic and looks appropriately sized regardless of your height. It works for all sizes because it doesn’t have a typical cruiser look.

Hi buddy lovely bike. Can i ask if you had any issues scraping the foot pegs. Seen a few videos where people have scraped the pegs easily. I am thinking about this or a T120 like the looks of the Speedmaster more but feel the T120 will handle better. Also i take my partner out often can i ask if you have had a pillion on the bike and if you have riden a T120 and how they compare. 👍
@TheSpeedmasterRick Жыл бұрын
Hey Gary. To answer your questions: 1) I do scrape the footpegs everyone once in a while, but I would by no means call it an issue. It has a decent lean before you scrape and most people probably won't too often. I think it really depends on how aggressively you ride. 2) I have taken pillions on the Speedmaster, but just the 4 you saw in this video to date. It is too cold in Virginia right now (this morning it was 8 degrees) to ride, and I find women do NOT like to ride in the cold :), so my Speedmaster is temporarily in hibernation right now. 3) I have never ridden the T120, but I have sat on it, and I think it is too small for me. Note: In a few hours, I will have a new video up discussing the issues I have / weaknesses I've noticed with the Speedmaster

The Speedmaster makes 112 mph /180 km/h. It is electronically limited at this speed.
@TheSpeedmasterRick Жыл бұрын
Really? Are you sure about that? Do you have any reference you can send me? And do you know why they would do that?
@JH-ox7hn Жыл бұрын
My Triumph dealer told me, after i asked why my '22 Speedmaster is literally hitting a wall at 180 km/h. Apparently higher speeds are considered to be unsafe on this Motorbike , which is perfectly understandable as it's no fun to go this fast with this seating position.
@donaldaltman8474 Жыл бұрын
As I mentioned above, I have read this bike is not electronically speed limited. I wonder if you might have a hard time hitting 110 or more without a windshield. Anytime I've taken my cruisers up to 110-125 was when I crouched down low below the windscreen. The Speeedmaster was totally planted, no wobbling at 110mph. Unlike other bikes that displayed at least 5mph higher than the actual speed, the Speedmaster's speedometer readings are right on the money with digital radar readouts.
@TheSpeedmasterRick Жыл бұрын
@@donaldaltman8474 I suspect hitting 125 without the windshield would be very rough. Even if the bike can make it there, I'm a pretty strong guy, but I Know when I got to 100, the wind drag was pretty brutal. And as I mentioned, the drag created in relation to velocity increases quadratically. If I ever find a road where I'm not going to go to jail if I get busted, I will push it and find out

Pretty spot on. Enjoyed your take on a fantastic bike. I put on a Triumph wind screen on my ‘22 for longer distances or cooler weather here in Texas. I very much like both looks. This past May, from Dallas to Austin in serious rain going 80+ on I-35, I could easily ride it one-handed. No vibration and still very comfortable. Amazing bike, aside from feeling like a sail when barreling up from 0 to 60 in 5ish seconds 😅 Keep up the great work!

It feels good and it has enough power, even with a passenger onboard. As I mentioned in the video, there are bigger bikes (many of them with mids) that feel very uncomfortable. Eliminate the bikes that require hunching over. And then eliminate the touring bikes and/or heavy bikes with long rake angles, and I am not sure I have many options left :) Plus, I really like the Speedmaster, and because it is 'smaller', it is much much easier to handle and counter-steer.
