Fascinating stuff from the intrepid duo. Of course, HG Wells' mother was housekeeper at nearby Uppark.

Nice to see the other River Rother in Sussex - I live not too far from the eastern one. It is a little known fact (or is it?) that none of the main Sussex rivers carries the name with which it was originally bestowed. The river Rother in West Sussex was apparently known as The Shire for centuries, from the old English word meaning 'bright'.
@RichardVobes6 жыл бұрын
Oh that is an interesting fact - thanks for that.

Well done, I think mills are great,it is a shame so many were destroyed though. I like the Signe on that bridge at 9:12, That is a fascinating video well done Richard.

You should explore St Peter’s Church Twineham near Haywards Heath. It is a Tudor Brick church.

That was a fantastic walk!!! Lovely countryside & so many old bridges & wonderful buildings to look at! That 1st mill & Steadham Hall I could imagine living in.😏 I was quite surprised though that there were 2 manor houses & 2 mills (not so much mills as both made blotting paper) so close to each other. I always thought Lords of manors were basically lords over their own tiny kingdoms (ie. their own county) & had vast sums of land to keep watch over (why so many were also called sherrifs & were MP"s). So is this unusual for 2 manor houses to be so close to each other?
@RichardVobes5 жыл бұрын
I can't remember, where they not the same manor house from different angles?
@ramibu2395 жыл бұрын
@@RichardVobes Richard Vobes nope 2 separate one. The 1st one right on the river was quite large & lovely (had their own gate in a stone wall to the church), but had been subdivided into several separate homes/apartments. The 2nd one Dave Ford said used to be a much larger manor house, but for some reason both side were now removed & just basically the center part was left. It was a lovely home but def not the Downtown Abbey type of Manor House I think we are all used to seeing (drat! I wish I could find my glasses - sorry about all the typing errors!🙄)

Which is your favourite river?
@SidBonkers516 жыл бұрын
I guess my favorite river would be the Medway That rises in the High Weald, Sussex and then flows through Kent to the Thames estuary, it divides Kent into east and west which names the peoples of the county into "Kentish Men" and "Men of Kent". Taken from wikipedia "The Medway is said to divide the county of Kent into two parts: this may allude to the two dioceses into which Kent has been divided since the year 604: Canterbury and Rochester. The tradition has grown up, and is kept alive by the "Association of Men of Kent and Kentish Men", that those born in West Kent - the area north of the river, but including Maidstone, Gillingham (other than Rainham), Rochester and Chatham - are labelled Kentish Men (or Maids); while those born in East Kent are Men (or Maids) of Kent. " Which makes me a Kentish Man :)

Another cracking walk and Dave is an excellent guide Richard. Logans pretty cool too. Dave mentioned 'The invisible man' movie. There is an old film on YT called The invisible man by H.G.Wells, heres the link (kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6CQhoh_p8l8mbs). It's a bit fuzzy but very watchable. I don't know if it's filmed in your area. May be worth a look. Thanks Richard.
