It’s easy to look at this in hindsight and judge but at the time it was an attack that required a response. It wasn’t the going to war that was wrong, there had to be a response to make an example of someone, it was the way the war itself progressed, it lost sight of 9/11 and any retaliation and became an overreaching excuse to stamp authority where authority wasn’t realistic and the desired change was impossible. People that weren’t alive have no idea of the uncertainty that existed in the aftermath of an attack people had never anticipated. Even if there was intelligence that one may take place no one foresaw it happening on such an emphatic level, terrorists were using car bombs and explosives incapable of bringing walls down, there was nothing on this scale and however you look at it there hasn’t been since. If you do nothing it happens again, go to war and risk many things going wrong, or being judged negatively. The War failed because nobody planned for the longevity and the longevity was a result of not stopping when a plan says to stop. Easy to judge when you look back, impossible to anticipate when you’re looking forward.

@@gavinmc5285It's answered in the original comment. Failure is not stopping when the plan (or common sense) says you need to stop. I would add that appointing an ex- President's son as a new president also invites failure especially in a country like USA which proclaims and preaches the virtues of meritocracy to the world. One of the greatest deterrents for attacks is fear of retaliation. But when you appoint an unqualified individual to the most powerful role and give signals of nepotism tolerance, you lose that fear and invite problems.

Chills. What a fantastic speech Mr. President
@jrg5315 Жыл бұрын
Part of me is glad that the days of Establishment Government in Washington which people ignorantly trusted without any question, another part of misses a time when both sides could unite behind a somewhat competent President during times of crisis. Its sickening what the US government has done to innocent lives though both foreign and domestic.

I too was and am surprised that he made no mention of Cananda. I'm sorry for that my friend. I have seen many documentary videos amd stories now on youtube about the out pouring of love and support from Canands and its citizens. I know it's many years later and perhaps too late, but I thank you and your country friend. We love you Canada.

I agree. I watched this live and thought “what about Canada”. Canadians opened their private homes for people on flights that were grounded..stranded. Canadian citizens opened their doors for stranded passengers.. As an American myself I really thought how stupid not to mention that.
