Another (niche) use for electric engines is to serve as a "starter" engine for small steam engines, to give them enough time to ramp up at the start of a battle

Another thing that’s important to consider is how well it takes damage. I like to place small micro steam turbines and battery’s with electricity engines all around the craft. In my opinion that’s better than one big thing that can be taken out with one critical hit.
@OhmIsFutile4 жыл бұрын
Redundancy is a tough one. I certainly wouldn't recommend putting all your eggs in one basket for medium to large vehicles, but the square-cube law also means you usually get better stats out of bigger engines and the cost to protect them scales in favour of bigger engines. It's a balance.

If a ship spends alot of time waiting around, you can use very efficient engines to recharge its batteries out of combat, and rely mostly on battery for the combat. Useful for specialised ships like aa boats and things that are just for defense

@kimpatz21893 жыл бұрын
I found out that a two stage series turbos with another two stage series turbos on the other side of the carburetor (basically 4 turbos, 2 in series, in 2 sets) is enough to recycle every bit of the exhaust in a single cylinder. Now decreasing its volume is another headache inducing problem.

A way to get an impressive, but useless, looking steam engine is to add mass to the shaft. You can get up to a supposed '200,000' engine power, but the problem is that if you try and use it, it vanishes.
@OhmIsFutile3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but this is wrong. This is why I told people to put a load on their steam engines. It looks amazing to add heavy components... until you ask the engine to do stuff. EDIT: lol
@bright_lego3 жыл бұрын
@@OhmIsFutile The worst thing is I just today realised that this is not true. It is good if you want your engine to look impressive, but not good if you want to use it.

Wow, I've been experimenting with hybrid engines trying to make a super powerful engine and getting a headache doing so. (Where do the injectors/carburetors go for max efficiency? Where can I fit the turbos for max ppv?) Getting a general verdict has helped a lot.

Would you recomend having a steam engine as a main engine power production with back up fuel generators? For example a steam engine that covers 100% drive, and powering demand peaks from lams or so with other methods?
@OhmIsFutile4 жыл бұрын
Yep, that's a very good conclusion to draw. Use a nice big steam engine for your main power needs, protect it well, and use some fuel engines as backup/supplement for fluctuating demand/redundancy.

I don't really understand them well either. You need valves and ACBs and I think the general consensus is it's (mostly) not worth the time. I've seen a couple of setups use it somewhat effectively but it seems unnecessarily complicated for small benefits.
