I'm a kiwi, and I love Kane, but it's so hard to define the "best player." You could say that Kohli, Williamson, and Smith are very similar in quality.....Some would add Root, maybe but i'd have him in 4th. As much as I don't like Smith, his record suggests he's the best test player, but Kane is much more visually pleasing.
