Big piece of missing context for the Kadokawa buyout: A Korean company (Kakao) has been aggressively buying shares of Kadokawa looking to take over. Rumors are saying that Kadokawa turned to Sony for a buyout because they would rather be owned by a fellow Japanese company than a foreign one.

That's very unlikely. The Japanese government can intervene in case of a hostile takeover by an overseas company. There is no need to go looking for a buyer in that situation. That's probably just a planted rumour for PR reasons

The only way a hostile takeover can happen is if the party who wants to do the takeover has a large majority share, like 20%, according to their public records the largest ownership of the company is by Kakao Investment Co at 8.870%, whereas the company itself owns around 4.412% themselves and another 4.78% through Masao Kawakami for a combined 9.192% stake. What they should focus on is buying back shares to ensure they have a larger percentage, to around 15% - 20%.

People concerned about what impact this will have in the gaming space should calm down a bit lol. Developers like FromSoftware, Spike Chunsoft, and Acquire would all most likely retain enough autonomy to do whatever they wish separate from PlayStation Studios or be spun off as independent developers like Bungie currently. I believe FromSoftware will still do Elden Ring 2 and it will still be multiplatform. Spike Chunsoft will still do games like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Acquire will still do games like Mario & Luigi; Brothership. What people should be actually worried about is the fact that Sony will be completely taking over the anime industry if this acquisition goes through. Based on their previous purchases these past few years it's much more likely they're acquiring Kadokawa to monopolize the anime industry than they are because of its gaming studios (The gaming related assets are just a bonus guys).
