Sony has expressed their wish to buy Kadokawa and have presented them with preliminary terms, pricing and other legal mumbo jumbo. It does not obligate either party to proceed. Kadokawa has explicitly stated that no decision has been made on the matter. This is not the first time Sony and Kadokawa have talked about a potential buyout. For all we know, Kadokawa will flat-out refuse or both parties can't come to an agreement. We don't know.

It's amazing how the industry has changed. Exclusives are seen as a bad thing now, but back in the day exclusives were how your console remained competitive. It's why Nintendo has always been a behemoth. If From games continue to be released on PC (and Sony has been putting more and more of their once-exclusive IPs on PC like God of War and Horizon) then I don't really see the big deal here. The last time Sony and Fromsoft partnered on a game we got Bloodborne. And that's assuming Sony even bothers to meddle in their affairs. I think they mostly want the profits from the anime.

Idk man, you've listed the ps-exclusive singleplayer games that worked out for sony, so I doubt you too haven't noticed that the majority of those games have a history of being followed up by a sequel, which consistently turns out to be worse than the original. This happened to GoW, Horizon, Last of Us already, with Tsushima in development. It almost seems like they've tried to intentionally market some of them via controversy, which is by far the most concerning thing, as i'd hate to see the following FromSoft title thrown in the center of media attention to be a fighting ground on twitter. Then again, it's all still just speculations, so let's see how this goes

I doubt Sony will push these franchises into being PlayStation exclusives, they have already been moving away from this. They seem to have conceded to the fact that the PC market is already too strong and they make more money if they release to it. Whether they release to other consoles is a different question, but PC for sure. We'll see if they give up on pushing PSN accounts.

05:38 It's probably important to consider that for a cople of years post-pandemic Sony was v. seriously planning/investing/etc. around a multiplayer/'live service'-focused strategy. They had like half a dozen or more multiplayer games cooking and then they abandoned the strategy and cancelled all of the games lol (including a TLOU spin-off). Buying the Concord devs and acquiring Bungie were decisions made under that plan. Ostensibly they have very recently announced a committment to high production-value singleplayer titles but ofc thats just their word. I dont touch consoles but i would say that investing R&D, marketing etc into the PS5 Pro SKU is probably a positive indicator of that intention

Dope, the Souls games exist in large part because Sony helped make the original Demon's Souls, Sony even asked Demon's Souls to be made so all the Souls games exist in part because of Sony. Sony turned Japan Studio into Team Asobi games so yeah they still exist. That's why Sony owns the Demon's Souls IP. Bloodborne too, the Souls games were always Sony games. God willing this deal goes through so that Sony can outperform Microsoft since MS bought out Activision.

I dont think Fromsoftware games will become exclusive to Playstation, Sony has on recent years move part of their catalog to PC (God of War, Final Fantasy, Last of US, Horizon, etc...) part of the reason for the massive success of Elden Ring was being available on all platforms. At worst, you will need to sign in to a psn account to play the next Fromsoftware release

I honestly think most people aren’t even worried about the acquisition of FromSoft with the the buying of Kadokawa, but more with the anime and manga. Sony already owns a large portion of the market by owning Crunchyroll/Funimation and Aniplex and now they will own another large portion of anime. A lot of people don’t like the idea of one company owning so much of one type of media.

The problem with that argument is that Sony doesn’t the anime they just have the streaming right due to buying the licenses for the anime. And the actual owners of the IP can license it off somewhere else. Aniplex just helps fund these IP so they have partile ownership of the anime once it’s produced. So saying they would own a big Chunk of the industry would be a lie since up until this point they don’t own anything on the platform from a legal perspective.

Wow I am so scared of getting Bloodborne, GoW (2018), or Ghost of Tsushima level games. For all of the glazing Bloodborne gets, kinda crazy how this community completely forgets about regarding this situation. There is a reason Bloodborne has the most unique animations and bosses outside of Sekiro. Elden Ring still reused bosses and animations from Demon Souls. That is a result of budget, Sony purchased Bungie for 3.6 billion. FromSoft would get a huge check if they were acquired by Sony. This fear mongering is going to make people hate the next FromSoft game no matter what. Be prepared for the next DS2. The game won’t be bad, but people will look for reasons to hate on it that they didn’t do for other FromSoft games.

I hate the new God of War games and Ghost of Tsushima is just a better Ubisoft game. Bloodborne's bosses suck outside of half a dozen at best and I'm pretty sure they still reused animations in BB.
