Hello, and welcome to another video from Flaming Spider Cyclone! Today we are going to change the brake caliper on a 2002 Ford Escape. This process is the same for 2001 - 2007. As well as Mazda Tribute 2001-2006, and the Mercury Mariner 2005-2006.

Thanks for the helpful video. I've watched probably 6 or 8 similar videos in preparation for working on my 06. But I think you jinxed me with the hex head bolt comment you made! I had everything laid out and ready to go including my T45 Torx socket. Friday the 13th has been in full effect. Naturally, my caliper bolts aren't Torx. Not only are they hex head but they're some bizarre size. (I'm 99.999% sure - after spending the whole day trying to find anyone in Buffalo NY who stocks one - they're 7/16) I've had debates with auto parts guys all day. "Are you sure this is a brake caliper?" "Sadly, yes I'm sure. 3/8 is too small, 1/2 is too big. 10 mm, 11 mm, and 12 mm don't fit either." I can't get a 7/16 in till Monday so I'm stuck with a sticking caliper till then. With my luck they'll turn out to be some even more bizarre size like 15/32 or heaven forbid 31/64 (is that even a size!?!) Seriously thinking about cutting them with a torch since I'm replacing calipers, brackets, rotors and pads. Thought you might get a chuckle out of this. Have a great weekend!

I was doing this for a mazda tribute and had to buy a new 9mm hex socket because nothing I had would fit.

Thank u, great video! I'm changing mine this weekend. Bought the entire socket set along with the cal. I'll b looking for more of your videos. I have 2 escapes, 07 & 08. Just put a new transmission in them both not long ago.

Oh I new u were joking lol. I actually bought a full 12 piece star socket set that goes to the entire car, Didn't pay over $13 bucks for it. U have Facebook/ Instagram? I'd follow. Heres a video idea, computer pannel/box where gearshift is located. Need some answers to some question plez. Thanks & great job!

Never ceases to amaze me the nonsense perpetrated by the manufacturers to force everyone to take their vehicles into either the dealer or a repair shop. Maybe I'm too old school but I've always taken pride in the repairs I can perform myself. Yes, there are things that I have neither the tools nor the facilities to complete but something as simple as brakes should not be one of them. (not that the ability to stop the vehicle should ever be taken lightly but you know what I mean 😁)

Excellent tutorial. What's with the no Banjo bolt? Seems a bit ridiculous to have to spin the caliper around to thread it. Again, nice work.

Been on the sidelines with a stomach bug but now I'm officially bewildered. Too small: 10mm, 3/8. Too big: 11mm, 7/16. I really was only kidding about 15/32 and 31/64. And I can't believe this is a 10.5mm or if I can even find a single socket that size. WTF! Guess it's time for more drastic measures.

Turns out my caliper is OK. The clips on the rear pad had rusted off. The pad somehow shifted and got wedged against the rotor. Speaking of rotors, my neighbor is a mechanic whenever he's home but he told me to clean the new rotor with acetone before installing it.(?) It's been a long time since I replaced the rotors on a vehicle but this is the first time I've ever heard of that procedure. In researching it I've found arguments for and against. What is your opinion? Thanks!

I haven't used it myself so I'm not sure, they also sell brake cleaner spray cans, that may be an option as well

I'm trying to do mine. But I can't get the caliper to come off the break line. Do you have any suggestions??

Oh yeah, forgot the miserable punchline to this horrible joke. The caliper bolts (after I had to remove the 2 caliper bracket bolts and take off the whole assembly) turned out to be 9mm! The head is so deeply recessed that my sockets couldn't even reach it. Ai yi yi! Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you.

That's what mine turned out to be on a Mazda Tribute I did recently. I had to go buy a new socket for it because sets of them don't come with 9mm for some reason. I hope that you are able to get it out eventually, hex bolts are the worst sometimes.

Flaming Spider Cyclone I was. You're right about the sets all missing the 9mm. Took the 2 18mm caliper bracket bolts out and removed the whole brake assembly. Then was able to get it all apart with the assistance of my neighbor. That was how I was able to figure out the right size. Got the last 9mm socket from NAPA. Only one store in the entire Buffalo NY area had one. Thankfully the job is done and I have everything I need for next time. Thanks again for the great video and for all your help!

You can try using a small hammer to tap on the wrench, that may help loosen it. You can also try to use some lubricant to spray on it as long as it doesn't get on the rotors. Hope this helps.
