Thank you BUSARU. This more than anything, teaches patience while working on old stuff. Anyone can buy a new replacement part. Appreciate all your tips and showing how you resolved things when many of us just give up when faced with same situation. There might be other ways to tackle it but this is how you did it and it worked. Saved to my library!

I know this is an old video but very helpful. I just finished cleaning and rebuilding my 75 bus calipers. Only thing I would recommend to the next guy would be to remove the 4 bolts that allow you to split the caliper in halves. Much easier to clean and work. Thanks Busaru!

Thanks for sharing. Really enjoyed. The bleeder screw was classic old car stuff but you got it out in the end :-)

Yeah, pretty rough working on old rusty stuff!

Funnily enough this video was absolutely perfect for my bus. It also has a beam and break system from a 74. Mines been sticking too on the left side too. Ingenious way to get that bleeder out mate and piston extraction! JP

Heres a hot tip on de-rusting and removing bleeder screws. You may think its crazy shit but take your caliper with the hose on and submerge it in Muriatic acid for as long as you need to remove the rust .Then hit it with the water hose and blow it dry with compressed air and quickly paint it. Then if you need to rebuild the guts then do so. Acid doesn't hurt rubber . The acid will get right down into the thread and more times then not the bleeder will come out! If it does break off still then you need to mig weld as I see you already know! Your welcome! Muriatic acid is costic so use it outside in a plastic pan and glasses, gloves and a water supply handy for safety sake. 13$ at the hardware store. Youll use this to remove all your rust on parts from now on Im sure.

Good video as I’m about to work on the same calipers office 73 square back which are kind of moving but locking up when the brake pedals pushed I’m hoping it will be a little easier to get out than yours.

Another way to do this, if the caliper is really seized, is to reconnect the caliper to the hydraulic line. After you remove the pads there is a gap of 16mm so you need a couple of metal bars to place in the gap. The idea is to pump the brake pedal and the pistons should ease out. Try using a single 8mm metal bar with two short 8mm pieces on the side of the piston you want to remove. Then swap the short 8mm pieces to the other side to remove the other piston. The piston on the wheel side of the caliper is harder to remove. so it is probably a good idea to try this first.

+John Grabiec That's a great idea. I'll try that if I ever get stuck calipers again. Thanks for sharing.

Forgot to mention that you will lose a bit of brake fluid so be ready to clamp the line when the pistons pop out. We are going to flush the whole system anyway - so that was not an issue. The caliper actually sits quite nicely on the ball joint too - if you do try this. There are other videos on youtube out there suggesting to use a grease gun too - but I thought that was going to be too messy.

thanks, great video - very detailed, but why do a rebuild? A whole new caliper, with pads is $150 - how many hours did you spend on this ( also $50 for pads ++ seals & bleed screw). But I don't have a job, thanks to Covid, so I guess I'll follow your video & do a rebuild, to save my $$

Next time on a bleeder screw use heat then water, if doesn't work the first time try again, lol really good video though thank you!
