There was a mention that there's actually a top and a bottom to the brake pads so that there is actually one set for the left and one set for the right when you inspect them. How can you differentiate the two

The pads can be used on either the passenger or drivers side of the vehicle. Each side uses two pads one on the backside of the brake rotor and one on the outside face of the brake rotor. Those are different from each other. When you disassemble the brakes it is very obvious which is which.
