I just finished my job and I d like to report my experience. First I put the bushings into the freezer for a few days, remembering the "Shrinkage" episode of Seinfeld and everything else I remembered about what cold does. After I removed the old bushings, let the bracket cool down and cleaned it out, I put a very thin coat of dish (as you recommended) and they slid right in so very easy! I tightened the short bolts to torque specs and the long bolts hand tight. I let the new bushings sit over night to get to acclimate and then tightened the long bolts to torque specs. It may have added an extra day to the process but I think it was worth it. Thanks as always for the video. If not for it I would still be running on old worn out bushings. Keep on wrenching and putting up excellent videos.

Hi Tim, I removed that bushing (at 12:25) on 100 series LC with a chisel. You will need two and needs to drive both on opposite sides between the arm and the lip on the bushing. No need to heat, it will just slide out easily. Febest makes those replacement bushings and I used it since I cannot source OEM bushing without the arm and it works really good. Thanks for your awesome videos!

Do you think the bushings on an '03 4x4 Tacoma needing replacement could cause a low speed clunk upon side to side weight transfer- on turning/ driveway entrance/exit? My driver side is covered in oil from oil filter changes. I haven't had a chance to get the truck in the air to pry on these to see if they're loose. Thanks again for the great content!
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 4 жыл бұрын
It could be but hard to say. A front end clunk could be a lot of things like control arm bushings, maybe a loose sway bar, or possibly even play in the steering shaft. Things of this nature can be hard to figure out. Your best bet is to start looking at different possibilities and correcting things as you find them.

The driver side is where that oil change happens every 3000 or so, if you don’t mind me asking, I’m at 170000 what do you recommend for oil changes. It’s a smooth motor. And thanks a bunch for your friend who took on building these bushings!

Hopefully it is the cause of your vibration and replacing these bushings fixes your problem. I use to do engine oil and filter changes every 3000 miles when I was using a sem--synthetic oil but now that I'm using a full synthetic, I have changed my interval to every 5000 miles.

I haven't noticed any change in the ride but I don't think my OEM bushings were in really bad shape either. The rubber was probably fatigued but the bushing wasn't falling apart like I've seen on some vehicles. Yeah, I realized that would have been good to show how stiff the new bushings were but I didn't think about it until I was editing the video. Oh well. Curtis know his stuff so I figured the Durobumps bushings were going to be a big improvement over my 18 year old rubber bushings. What are you experiencing while on the highway?

Timmy The Toolman I think I’m just being dramatic about the the vibration. Lifted on 33’s so I shouldn’t expect much but looking to smooth it if I can. I can’t pin it down to vibration more in the seat or steering wheel but at high speeds like 70 plus I get a vibration. Was fun to cruise at 80 in this thing pre-lift. Plus I’m running 305s on 16 inch wheels.

When I did my Total Chaos diff drop I only got the long bolts tightened down with a breaker bar (and wrench on the nut). Never experienced any noise until I went wheeling, and there was a couple clunks here and there. I saw the torque spec was 101ft-lbs, so i went out and properly torqued the bolts (they were very loose in comparison to proper torque) and now the clunking seems to be worse/more consistent, along with some creaking. Does this sound like these bushings are the culprit? I can't imagine what else would be
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 4 жыл бұрын
It could be the bushings but what do they look like? Are they deteriorated? If not, your problem is most likely elsewhere. Have you inspected other parts of your front suspension like your lower control arm bushings or maybe your sway bar?
@Patrick.Weightman
@Patrick.Weightman 4 жыл бұрын
@@TimmyTheToolman Sorry for the late reply, KZbin hasnt been notifying me recently. One of them looks fairly shot (drivers side, gets dripped on by oil), and the other likes to groan a little bit as the bolt is torqued. The bolts don't come out totally easily like yours too. The sway bar has new bushings that have been greased and new links too, I believe the noise persists with them disconnected as well but I'll have to check again. As far as LCA bushings they could definitely need replaced - it's something that's on my list, and will probably do when I get new UCAs as well (no need for two alignments!)

Another good video in the books. I have a question Tim. The same procedure you used to get that bushing out the the heat. Can you apply that same technique for the upper and lower control arms to remove the bushing and use aftermarket bushing like energy suspension because of the cost. Dealers want about $400+ for upper and lower CA bushings. Energy suspension has a set for $65+. I watched the video of how you replaced them already but you used factory parts and you had to press out that inner sleeve that the bushing is in. I just want to burn out the rubber like you did in this video and slip in the ES bushing and utilize the factory inner sleeve. What’s your opinion on this. Thanks again Tim.

fyi that in the 1st gen Tacoma and 3rd gen 4Runner, if you're experiencing a significant clunk when you let off the gas suddenly at highway speed, and less severe clunk when shifting to and from reverse, it could well be these bushings, or at the very least they are contributing to the issue

Timmy, me again today! I just came across this video. I was adding a diff drop to my GX470 a couple of weeks ago and noticed the bushings were in pretty bad shape, but just figured there was nothing I could do about them. But…….your video hopefully solves my problem. I also run the full DuroBumps in my rig and am a fan, so hearing you mention them made me go right to their website to order them. Unfortunately, I did not see them listed for the GX. Will the 3rd gen 4R bushings fit my GX? They look like the same bushings setup, just not sure of the inner diameter spec on the support arm. And thanks for being so helpful and responsive, Bluegrass GX (Lee G)

@TimmyTheToolman

Well, the Ebay arms will be aftermarket and I would be suspect of the quality of the arm itself and the quality of the bushing they use. I am a fan of aftermarket parts when it comes to certain things like suspension, bumpers, lighting, etc. So, those arms could be made of decent steel and have quality bushings but maybe they aren't. It's hard to say because I don't have any personal experience with them.

Could you get the bushings out without heating up the arm?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 4 жыл бұрын
I suppose if you had some way to get around the circumference of the rubber bushing and cut it out and then scrape out the residual, it would be possible. The bushing replacement that Durobumps makes for this application isn't a full replacement. The OEM bushing is a rubber bushing encapsulated in a metal sleeve. We're just heating up the arm so the rubber separates from the sleeve and it's easy to remove. If this was a full bushing replacement, we would be pressing out the entire bushing with the metal sleeve out of the arm, and pressing in a brand new bushing that is rubber encapsulated in metal. If you want to do this, I really think using heat is the way to go. Any type of cutting and scraping would be tedious I think. I don't believe the amount of heating we're using for the removal is going to weaken the steel.

Hey Timmy, how are these duro bumps doing so far? And do you think a C press for upper ball joints can take these diff joints out?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 жыл бұрын
They're holding up just fine but I haven't put that many miles on them yet so I can't say for sure what their longevity will be. But, for the savings you get by not having to buy complete arms, I think these bushings are worth the gamble. The OEM bushings have a metal outer sleeve with the rubber adhered on the inside of the sleeve with another metal sleeve through the middle of the rubber for the bolt to go through. The Durobump bushing is replacing the rubber and inner bolt sleeve but is not replacing the outer sleeve. Using a balljoint c-press could possibly break and force some of the rubber out, but since the rubber is adhered to the metal, you'd still need a torch to get the rest out. I'd just follow what we did and use a torch to burn them out.

Depends on how high you lift your front end. It seems most people opt for a 3" suspension lift in the front and will benefit from a 1" diff drop. If you do a very mild lift, say 1 inch, you probably don't need a diff drop. For lifts 2 - 3 inches, I'd recommend people install the diff drop because it will help with the CV angles.

Hey Timmy, so i have been having play in my front end. Ive took it to Toyota free complementary inspection ( or whatever they call it ) so they tell me tie rods look good upper ball joints look good lower ball ball joint look good. Then they said take it to a 4x4 shop. They said my 4runner looks altered. What?? ( because i have 265/75R16 ) wow Toyota is lame. Then they said might be my sagging springs. I personally think they didn't do squat. I thought it might be the lower or upper control arms. But, now that i found this video... im wondering if this could be the issue. Every time i drive over train tracks or up my driveway or going over a rolling gate rail, i can feel it on my steering wheel column and front end loose. Can this give you that effect? Is there a way to diagnose this while on the 4runner? I cant find the problem. What a pain.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 жыл бұрын
Well, your problem could be several things. It could be worn control arm bushings causing that loose feeling in your front end. It could be worn steering rack bushings causing excessive movement on the steering rack. It could be an out of adjustment or worn steering rack guide. It could be play in the steering shaft itself. It could be what this video addresses. We have videos to fix all the possibilities I've mentioned. You can diagnose some of these things on the vehicle. For the steering rack bushings, you can get under the rig looking at the steering rack while somebody else turns the wheel back and forth and you can look for gross movement in the steering rack on the cross member. For the steering rack guide, you could disconnect the rubber boot on the driver side, grab ahold of the shaft pushing and pulling on it to see if it has movement in it. It should feel pretty tight with little to no slop. The later models, I thing 96-00 had a different guide than the 01 and 02 models. The guide for the 01-02 models is an improved design. For play in the steering shaft, you could turn the wheel with one hand while holding onto the shaft near the floor board with the other hand feeling for slop or clunking. You could also get under the rig while somebody else turns the wheel for you while you're examining the steering shaft u-joint and the rag joint at the steering rack. There is a collapsable section of the steering shaft hidden beneath the dash area. The collapsable section has been known to develop play and people have fixed it by tack welding it. There's also the tilt wheel ball that can develop a little play in it and we made a video showing how to address these issues. Diagnosing play in the control arm bushings is probably the most difficult but you'd need to get in there with a big pry bar wedging it in different ways to put stress on the bushings to see if the bushings allow for gross movement. Diagnosing problems like this can be frustrating and you just have to start eliminating possibilities to figure it out. I hope this helps.

@@damacknificent151 Ok, check out that video we made for steering play fix to see what I'm talking about with that possibility, check for play in the steering rack guide, and also check for gross play in the upper and lower control arm bushings, mainly the lowers. Well Aaron, I'm sorry you feel that way about Curtis and his company, I've had the polar opposite experience with Curtis. He has been super generous with us sponsoring our parties with product for our free raffles. He has listened to the input from Sean and I and made a change to how he manufactured the rear bumpstops. With any company there will be growing pains especially when the expansion happens quicker than expected and then all of a sudden you're playing catch-up. I've seen this with other companies I've dealt with like CBI who I bought several products from. There were things lacking with installation instructions, how the hardware bags for multiple products weren't labeled which bag or box was for what, the extended wait time to get the product, etc. Gobi is another one with seriously long wait times for their racks but people continue to order from them anyways because their product is good. We made the video and recommendation for Durobump products because the feedback on the Toyota forums was excellent and we thought it would be a good aftermarket option to share with our viewers. Are we always going to be 100% with our recommendations? No, we're not. We base our decision to support a company from the information available and that's the best we can do. I would have been shocked if this caused you to unsubscribe to our channel, and quite frankly, it would have been your loss. Sean and I aren't slowing down in the least bit and you would have missed out on a lot of good content unsubscribing. But, I imagine people get tired of us and move on and that's ok. You are correct there isn't any long term testing so we won't know for quite some time how durable these bushings will end up being.
