They lock the back pads in place. Basically, vibration dampers.

@@MegaMilesBen yeah that's why breaks got done very quickly , my problem is those caps for the lugnuts , they just kept spinning , had to figure out best way to remove them was to screw a screw into it then pull it off , 5 hours me thinking the bolt could be stripped, not knowing its just a crappy cap ,but only 4 min to do each break

What if the brake disk is rusty should I do a surface grind or let brakes do it

Depending how built up the rust is. If you can see the pads have been rubing into it, then yes, they should be turned or replaced. Its almost cheaper to just replace them these days anyway. PowerStop.com has amazing quality brake packages for half the cost of parts stores. I always recommend coated rotors, itll help prevent that rust build up and prolong the life of the rotors.

When you say self taught how did you learn how to do everything? How would you recommend someone get to this point on working on cars? Is it just a matter of just doing it and watching KZbin videos/ etc? I appreciate any feedback I’m just getting into fixing my own cars and really enjoy it. My best friends dad is a shade tree mechanic so going to get with him on jobs and learn as much as I can. I enjoy your videos and love when you discuss what you are thinking when you are working .

I went to community college during high school long enough to learn the very basics. I dropped out of school at the beginning of 10th grade. Back then it was a lot of Haines manuals, shop books, watching others and trial and error. You learn something new with every job, even simple jobs can become nightmares. You have an advantage with youtube, you can learn a lot. We didnt have youtube then. Getting your hands in there and doing it is the best way to learn.

@@MegaMilesBen will do! I always use one for lug nuts but need to start when I’m doing breaks. Actually tomorrow changing a transmission solenoid in my Dodge Ram so I’ll be using torque wrench for sure. Got the 1/4 inch extended Hercules ratchet recently and loved it. Getting the 1/2 impact wrench tonight, they have a deal going on for $120 for the impact/ 5amp battery and charger. Can’t beat it

In 1988 I bought a New Isuzu 4x4, when it came time to change the front brakes I could not push in the calipers, that's when I found out about screw in calipers after calling the dealership. ✌🏻

They can be a pain in the butt. Most times they go right though.
