I can confirm now anyone do you watching this video that has SPC upper control arms on their vehicle do not do what he did in this video. By removing that top 32 mm not you’re going to allow the plates underneath the control arm to move therefore you would have to get a realignment. The proper way to remove, this from the truck is remove the cotter pin and castle nut underneath on the bottom of the upper ball joint where it goes through the top of the steering knuckle. Then use a ball joint press to press it up through the knuckle. Removing that 32 mm nut is going to cause the plates to move which determine your camper and caster you’re going to have to take your vehicle in to get an alignment if you do it that way
@WeekendWrenchTurner4 ай бұрын
This is true and thank you for adding this comment. I do this because I have lifetime alignments for my truck through Firestone so I always get an alignment afterwards. Should probably do that regardless of whether you move these plates, though that is just my opinion.
@rthomas21574 ай бұрын
If you properly remove these from the control arms, there is no need to get an alignment.

Best bet is to look through local junk yards probably. I was fortunate to have a local 4Runner parter that I got a second set from, but I'd imagine the non-ABS spindles were the same measurements. I don't know definitively.

If I remember correctly, I used a brass punch to get it started and then tapped around in a star pattern. It took a minute to get it started since, as you said, it's a bit bigger than the inside bore of the knuckle.

At 33:55 you just tossed the beveled ring on the back of the hub no hammering or pressing it on. It seams to me the ring would spin loose or is there a section of video missing?
@WeekendWrenchTurner3 жыл бұрын
Great question! This will essentially get pressed in as you tighten the hub nut when put it all back together👍👍 Thanks for checking out my video🍺🍺
@CplGoldFish213 жыл бұрын
So you’re saying tightening the cv axle nut will set that lock ring? I’m confused cause your answer makes it sound like the video was based on manual hubs not the a.d.d. Hub you were working on.
@WeekendWrenchTurner3 жыл бұрын
Manual hubs, as you may well know, that lock ring screws into the hub on the back. The hub is threaded, whereas the a.d.d. hub is not. Even pressed in, that ring still spins freely. It is essentially only a spacer for the cv axle to press against.

Great video! I'm about to do this to my '97 with 368,000 miles on it. One question I had was, is that a 12 ton press you're using? 20 ton jacks, along with so many tools. etc. are backodered at Harbor Freight because of the COVID ordeal, and I wondered if a 12 ton is up to the task. I'm in SC, so no salty roads in winter time. Thanks!
@WeekendWrenchTurner3 жыл бұрын
It is the 20 ton press. I've not seen the 12 ton do this, but I've heard that the limiting factor on using that version is that the axle will not fit. You might get away with it with some modifications and maybe putting it up on blocks. Thanks for checking out the video👍👍 Edit: Shoot, sorry about that. Thought this was in reference to the rear axle bearing replacement. It might still be a tight fit for the fronts though.

At 32:00, I would have done it upside down. Put the spindle on the bottom, and press the entire bearing and knuckle assemble onto the spindle instead of trying to support the bearing from the bottom with that little sleeve.
@WeekendWrenchTurner2 жыл бұрын
I could envision doing it this way. Then you'd be pressing on the small sleeve instead of balancing on it. Only thing that could be an issue is clearance between the knuckle and press. I don't recall if that is the reason you do it the way I did though. Thanks for watching 👍🍺
@j.gtheautotech84552 жыл бұрын
@TheCharlesChen you need to support the back of the bearing. Putting it upside down doesn’t matter!!! You still need to support the back of the bearing or half of the bearing starts separate because the hub is pushing it.. support the bearing and bearing stays in place while the hub moves in.
@alexpage8965 Жыл бұрын
Hi, I appreciate the detailed video. I have a question though! Is there a reason that you pressed the hub into the bearing with a sleeve backing the bearing race, rather than pressing the with a sleeve on the inner race onto the hub? The couple times I tried to press a hub into a bearing, even when I thought I had the inner race supported, the bearing ended up damaged.
@WeekendWrenchTurner Жыл бұрын
Good question. Yes, you want to support the inner race so that the forces are not on the seals and bearings between the inner and outer races. That's why you want to press the bearing into the knuckle first, then the hub into the bearing. This way you can support the proper race with the force being applied to it. Hope that makes sense. Cheers, and thanks for watching 🍺👍
@alexpage8965 Жыл бұрын
Is there a specific reason that you would not want to press from the backside with a press sleeve on the inner race and press the hub/knuckle onto the hub? I would think that it would be easier and the force would still be applied to the inner race? But perhaps there is something more to it than that?
@WeekendWrenchTurner Жыл бұрын
Good question again. It's been a while, but I'm thinking that the orientation you described may cause clearance issues with knuckle. I'm going only by memory though, so could be incorrect.

Sir,Nice patient work but you have to press the spacer onto the spindle at the end before you put the seal on.It does not just go over the spindle hub like the ABS toner ring,It needs to be pressed so its flush against the abs ring.
@WeekendWrenchTurner3 жыл бұрын
That didn't seem to be the case for me, but I think you are correct for many others. I did have to hammer it on a bit, but then it seemed to drop past a lip and then was loosely on the back of the spindle. Good information though 👍 Thanks for watching🍺👍
@rthomas21574 ай бұрын
Why did you remove the 32 mm nut on top of the SPC upper control arms? That allow the plates underneath to move. Therefore, when you put it back on having your alignment off? In speaking with SPC they are advising to remove The castle nut underneath where it goes through the top of the steering knuckle not that 32 mm to avoid your alignment being off when you put it back on the truck

@@WeekendWrenchTurner thanks for the input.. i had a cornershop put in a new bearing a couple of years ago and there has been a slight knock when you jiggle the wheel at 12 and 6... a very small knock (maybe a mm or 2) but I am in the process of redoing it now that i have a 20-ton HF press without plates... so i wonder if this cornerShop installed the bearing backWards is why there has been a consistent knock ... the dealer told me it was because they re-used the hub and did not put a brand new 200$ to 300$ new hub in with the new OEM supplied bearing.. @WeekendWrenchTurner2 жыл бұрын
Not sure where in the video you saw that, but if you're talking about the big snap ring on the outside of the bearing; when you press the hub out of the bearing it moves the bearing against the snap ring, making it near impossible to remove without pushing it the opposite way to clearance the removal of the snap ring.

Soak snap ring in PB blaster let it soak scrape any rust out then REMOVE the snap ring first with long needle nose, your little snap ring pliers aren’t gonna get it out. Now press the hub and bearings out. Why make a how to video if you don’t know how to?
