God I love the internet. A serious debate on wood stacking. My grandpa always stacked the wood vertically in wrap around mounds, always quarter split unless he got logs that were 2 inches thick or smaller, and never used a tarp to cover them. My dad, however, did a simple wall against the shed, quarter split logs like his dad, but it was stacked compactly but with a tarp over it and the stack resting on plywood. ...I just realized I remember too much about the firewood stacking. I'm gonna go now.

My dad has several special racks made for stacking wood. He stacks his wood on these racks bark up and covers all the ones outside with tarps. The racks keep the wood off the ground.

Prime time in Norway doesn't have comercial breaks, and even if they do it's advertising debates or other prime time shows. But we really LOVE our dull and drawn out TV-shows! Last summer we had a TV-show lasting continually for six days straight, 134 hours in total, where a famous Norwegian boat called Hurtigruten was filmed sailing across the entire coast-line and visiting towns and cities along the way. This year we had a nearly identical thing but with a train. Some of you may find this weird or crazy, but it's actually really therapeutic to watch and it's fun when they arrive at your town and you get to talk about your quirky local history and traditions (and it's fun hearing all the weird dialects from all over the country).

In the United States, we have a program like that but it is only on Christmas eve. Last time they had a kitten curled up net to it, and a puppy who'd run by occasionally, he too fell asleep next to the fireplace. Usually the program isn't as decorated, so last year's was a pleasant surprise. Especially now that I live in the south, I'd never have thought I would so miss the cold...

Why not just put a tarp down first
@Vengedyr
@Vengedyr 3 жыл бұрын
@@wumbomango2092 That's even worse! A tarp on the ground will be *even wetter* than the ground after the very first rainfall, and then it will preserve that moisture for ever, and then that moisture goes into the bottom layer of the stack. You've got to get *air* under it. You have to elevate it somehow. Usually by laying it on two long planks or logs or just something, anything, just not directly on the foundation.

This video makes it seem as though us Norwegians are completely mad, we actually have a term for this kind of entertainment called "Slow TV". This started with a full length train ride from Oslo to Bergen, and people enjoyed it as a soothing relaxing thing to watch. Then Hurtigruten(a Norwegian cruise/ferry company) started "Hurtigruten: Minute by minute" which became a national phenomenon where people would go outside and wave to the ferry, people also follow the ship in their own boats.

You wouldn't stock all your big or small logs on the top or the bottom, but evenly thoughout as you don't want a fire with only small or only big logs.. You need to mix it up. And there wouldn't be a commercial break as I'm pretty sure it was on NRK which is a government/tax funded channel which isn't allowed to run them.. But even if they could, it be blasphemy to stop such a show.. I'll have you know that norway showed a non-stop footage of a ship as it sailed along Norway's coastline for close to 135 hours as well (just a few years ago).. So 12 hours is a piece of cake.. :p ps, i don't mind what side i stack the wood, as long as it's off the ground and under a roof :p

If you live in a fairly dry climate as you do, you can stack you wood anyway you like. But in the Nordic countries we rarely remove the bark, anyway bark will often loosen for two reasons 1. the wood is dry and ready 2. the layer under the bark have started rotting, in that case you have stored it wrong. Where I live Beech is the most common firewood, Birch 2nd then Oak. What kind of wood do you use?

Slow TV is a phenomenon here in Norway, and apparently we love it!? All these programs are made by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, which, in short, mean: NO COMMERCIALS!! To mention a few other shows than the one you mentioned; 2009 - The first foray into slow television was the program "Bergensbanen minute by minute" - a train journey across Southern Norway, which depicted the 7-hour train journey from Bergen to Oslo. 2011 - "Hurtigruten minute by minute" - a coastal 134-hour voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes depicted the Norwegian Coastal Express (Norwegian: Hurtigruten) ship MS Nordnorge. They transmitted the entire journey live and non-stop. 2012 - "Telemarkskanalen minute by minute" - a 12-hour channel boat cruise along the Telemark Canal. 2013 - "Nasjonal vedkveld" - a 12-hour broadcast on the topic of firewood. 2014 - "The Psalmbook - minute by minute" - a 60-hour show where they performed the entire contents of the Church of Norway's national hymnal book from cover to cover. Whats next? "A printer getting empty of cartridge, minute by minute"? "Walk from Main to California, minute by minute"? "Watch all the Disney movies in chronological order, minute by minute"?

As someone who lives in a cold climate, we have 2 long boards (about 5 feel long) on the bottom. We then stack wood on top (Rotten ones on bottom. doesn't matter which side as long as they fit). Once our pile is tall enough we cover the whole thing with plastic. Yes it does matter if you put the logs on top of some boards because you find that bugs love to burrow from the ground right to the logs.

***** Wood generally takes about three years to dry, so the better the stacking the quicker they dry. You don't want bugs to get in the wood because they'll cause it to rot, and rotted wood doesn't give off as much heat.

I live in western PA, not far from Virginia! We use a lot of wood to heat the house here. Stacking wood is nostalgic for me, my dad and his brothers get together to cut wood at least once a year, it's in fact sort of a ritual for them. When the guys bring back the wood, I've always helped my dad stack it. We currently, even summer have a 15 x 10 foot woodpile with three rows against the side of our house. We actually do stack the bottom up and the top down! There are layers that we alternate direction to help the stability of the pile. For most of the winter we never have to touch the thermostat, unless it gets to be 20 degrees Fahrenheit or below. Saves a lot on gas!

Only NRK would dedicate 12 hours to something like that. They are the king, record holder and pioneer of slow tv programs. And to think we pay for it with that flat tax they call a "TV license". Well, I suppose old-folks enjoy it.
@KvaGram
@KvaGram 7 жыл бұрын
By the way, said flat tax, is why NRK don't have any commercial breaks. So, while I don't know anything about this 12 hour program, or even know for sure it was NRK who was behind it, I can tell: It was likely NRK, and thus no commercial breaks. This is why I don't own a TV - I would have had to pay for stuff like that.

I still love TVs and TV programming, because they largely force expose you to content you wouldn't otherwise ever see. You grow most by exploring new things, after all, and not by simply going over the same things you're already familiar with. On demand content is convenient, but at the same time, it pretty much encourages you to exist solely in your own little box.
