A couponing friend of mine told me that the difference between a hoard and a stockpile/food storage is dust. 😁 If your cans & boxes are covered in dust, you have a hoard because you’re not rotating the food and using it. The only exception is if you have long term food storage (stuff that lasts for 10+ years). If your food storage is a working/rotating deal, you’re good. 👍🏼

Jenifer Rogers Long term food storage items are usually sealed in #10 cans. Thrivelife.com is a company that specializes in this, but there are a lot of other companies that have similar items. Augason Farms and Mountain House are 2 that come to mind.👍🏼

If you were going to finish the basement you could move either the water heaters or the furnace to the other side. My brother-in-law moved his furnace himself because it was right in the middle of the room (talk about dumb placement), and he's not a tradesman or anything. The hard part would probably be moving the drain. I agree it should have been planned that way in the first place, but I think most people have a lot more junk that they need a big storage room for! I'm guessing you store holiday decorations elsewhere...

I love how big your pantry is!!! & it’s whatever works best for you and your family!!! I have mine separated into groups. Like I have a container ($ store) that is for meal prep or easy meals to prepare, another container that is for sweets, another for honey 🍯 & chocolate, another for extra spices, another for alternative sweetners, & 1 for quick healthy snacks like meat sticks, etc. I like clear OXO containers for loose food like homemade trail mix (don’t use the knock offs for food that is not packaged inside the container- learn from my mistake!!! The knock offs do not seal as well as you think & will make your food stale. Same with the wet bag type of sandwich/snack bags. They breathe & your food will be stale ASAP! Use silicone/plastic/glass. Please learn from my mistakes!!!) Also on those containers I do have stickers or labels on them. Remember those scrapbook stickers most of us have that we have yet to find new uses for? Oh yeah I used those... like salt & pepper stickers for the extra spices, I have one OXO clear (TALL) container that has a pumpkin with candy spilling out on one side and on the opposite side, Cookie Monster juggling cookies. If it’s face out with cookies 🍪 then cookies are inside, if pumpkin side, it’s candy. We put all Easter/Halloween candy etc in there & give for special treats!!! It’s fun looking in my pantry 😁😁😁😉 also have a rolling can “dispenser” for my canned items. It helps me keep up the FIFO with ease!

Love this. And even as the kids get older and move, they will come in and “shop” your stock piles. There isn’t a whole lot of potential for waste, more so if you watch the expiration dates and donate close to time and/or can and dehydrate any fresh or frozen items. Everyone complains about the woman who carries the huge purse until they need something out of it! Kudos on the preparedness.

I am well prepared and well stocked but always hav3 been it’s not because of Covid. I have two 700L Chest Freezers, nicknamed the coffins, plus the freezer section below my fridge. My pantry is full and one side, five shelves, in my linen closet. I do use and rotate all the time plus I’m quite often the supermarket for my grown kids and wouldn’t have things any other way.mi bake bread, kids tell me when their coming over and I bake bread for them too, I have large storage air tight bins with bread flour, rice, sugar, rolled oats and milk, powder in. It works for us and we never have waste and I’m constantly buy vacuum sealer rolls for my FoodSaver.

watch put for foods that have gone rancid. Not good for your body. Today I cooked some rolled oats and put some organic coconut cream in & some grass-fed butter and crushed fresh blueberries in it only to find out that it smelled rancid after it was cooked. I should've smelled it before. Garbage now. 😥 Most shelf foods are good years later. The rolled oats were from a Whole foods bulk bin in a big Ball glass jar with no date🤦🏻‍♀️

I'm into Scientific Processes and Organization, can be boiled down to Henry Ford's Method of Assembly Line. 1) I would put all your small appliances in the upstairs pantry closet with the light weighted least used on the top shelf. Bring them all upstairs to the kitchen work area. No one want to be running up and down for making an occasional bowl of Ice Cream. 2) Put heavy small appliances on the floor with the least used to the corner on the right. No use opening both doors each time you go into the closet pantry. Keep the most used on the left near the mop/broom. 3) I had my electrician put a wall plug about 4 1/2 feet off the floor then put one of those long narrow Mail basket with key hooks above the plugs for a Charging Station near the backdoor in the kitchen. Plug the phones in and drop them in the basket. Ends the eyes glued to the phones in the house. 4) I hate dangling cords, so picked up Velco Cord ties from the Office Supply store to keep the cords coiled up and neat. 5) Office Supply stores are a wealth of canvas totes, filing containers & boxes, etc. for storing loose items like drink mixes, gravy/sauces, small snack and bars, etc. 6) Put the Tupperware to use before you have bugs getting into your "stuff". You can order Diatomaceous Earth online. Just sprinkle a small amount in the bottom of clear plastic tubs or sealable pails/buckets to store boxed goods in with herb packets to discourage bugs & oxygen desiccant packs for long term storage. 7) I keep reusable shopping bags on a hook in my basement pantry for shopping trip. Makes it easier to do a weekend's worth on menus in one trip. Saving me time, steps and energy for family and myself. To maximize the space, T shelves out from the wall into the room two deep between each current shelf. You could increase your shelf space easily to 15-16 of the silver heavy duty shelves. The lightweight shelf could be moved away from the furnace and used strictly for paper goods. You're doing great with the oldest first out system and having good shelves. Told you I was obsessive of wasted space, steps and. energy, it's all Henry Ford's fault. Lol

At certain times of the year I would stock up for about a year. Fall was pasta, sauce and canned veggies. Late fall/winter baking goods. Spring eggs & dairy. I kept a price book of the 3 local grocery store costs and would make notes on rock bottom prices. One year all the pasta (except lasagna) was free. There was a blinkie machine that gave out coupons that made the pasta free at food lion. We ate around sales. I had recipes covering most possibilities. Egg at .65-.75 a dozen meant quiche, egg based casseroles, upside down breakfast. Kellogg’s had a promotion that paid me to buy Raisin Bran cereal. The food bank got over hundred boxes, lol. Since it can be tedious I turned it into a game, a competition, me against the store. And eventually me outdoing my best.

Mary Lober , my apologies, an upside down breakfast just means breakfast food for dinner. So, scrambled eggs, bacon and toast for dinner as an example. Or pancakes/syrup, eggs or eggs with potatoes/onions from the oven, quiche. Meats are optional if you haven’t got them at a rock bottom price.

I love seeing other people’s pantries! I use the dead space that is over the stairs to the basement as my pantry, my husband put shelves and a light that automatically goes on when I open the door. It’s got weird angles but works well. It’s not in the kitchen but close. I also have our old fridge and a chest freezer plus more shelves for storage in our unfinished basement. My biggest problem is mice, yes we have a cat, sealed the foundation and set up traps everywhere 🐭😻😩. To be frugal, I shop once a month but I also keep my eye open to grocery loss leader sales and stock up when able. It’s just my husband and I, but we’re cutting back on eating out and I have our kids and their families over so I cook quite a bit and enjoy it.

I recently “discovered” your channel. I love seeing what other people do to buy, organize, cook, etc. I don’t think you buy or have too much. A busy life requires that you make the most of the time you have. Cutting down on going to the grocery store not only saves time, but money. I’m just wondering why you don’t keep all like items together? I even alphabetize things so that I know exactly where something is in my pantries. My herbs & spices are alphabetical. I hate having to waste time looking for something & by keeping it alphabetical, I know right where to look.

You have way more meat than I do but my stockpile looks a lot like yours. We have a giant unfinished room in our basement we turned into the stockpile room. We use heavy duty shelves like yours. I love it but it’s funny how many people see it and make fun of it.

I keep coming back to watch your videos more than any other channel because you keep it real. Love your storage areas. We don’t have a basement here in TX so our hot water heater is in the garage. My pantry is teeny tiny so I don’t stockpile too much.

I am a huge fan and a subscriber but I think I have a stupider laid out house. Built in 1961, so no insulation (least of my gripes 😊). Just over a 1000 square ft, 3 bed (ha!🙄) Ok, let's start.. looking at the kitchen from the dining area (combined 9x24 corridor) 1. To the left is a doorless doorway to the small 3rd bedroom, then the stove with no storage built in on either side then the clothes washer. Small upper cabinets over both but so high up, almost unusable for a 5ft person. No range hood at all. 2. Blank wall in front of you, no outlets, no window, just plasterboard. 3. To the right, a nine foot base cabinet with double sink and upper cabinets. These are the only good things in this room. Built in place with solid wood. It'll withstand a nuclear bomb I bet (or a nice sized tornado maybe). Beside that is a 20 year old fridge that is next on the the list to replace and then the clothes dryer (half in the kitchen/half in the dining area). No pantry... at all... am in the process of rectifying that, but for now, pantry is in the 18"×18" linen closet in the hallway next to a bedroom. 4. House has two side doors and no direct access from inside house to backyard, must go thru carport to get to the gate. 5. No central heat and air, floor furnace quit 14 years ago. Usually winters aren't too bad but this last one was a doozy! I had to bug out to sisters house three separate times since Oct 2020 because either lost power in an ice storm (twice) or just dangerously cold. Sister had bought the house years ago and I'm renting it from her. It is in a neighborhood that is getting better, good neighbors. Nice south facing backyard... before you ask, finances due to Pandemic won't let me escape for now... I hate one-upping anyone, but I might have won 😁 Sorry for length, much love from Oklahoma! Edit to add...house was built after the neighbor's house so their powerline overhangs the corner of the carport's roof and had been laying on it for years until the power company had to replace the line due to it coming down in the last ice storm and ripping off of the neighbor's house.. but it still runs diagonally across my backyard from corner to corner. Dont see how it's legal, but there ya go!🤪

Got a freestanding pantry next to fridge. With bxs of cereal, crackers, cookies on that cabinet & fridge. Got couple of shelves of nonperishables in the laundry closet. Got the yard sale chest freezer. Hoarders unite! We will never have empty cupboards! And the toilet paper (2 family size. 30 roll pkg) on top of a shelving unit in my master bath. For a2 person household. And 4 cats--2 BIG ngs for them, 5 BIG bgs for the feral cat colony. (18 months to get all those beggars fixed. Saved by Grace [charity that helps fixes cats]).

We have a deep freeze and a decent sized pantry. I bought a plastic rack from home depot when I was pregnant with my first child and stocked it with baby food and other essentials. It's now holding crayons, kitchen appliances, etc. You have really inspired and helped me shop and cook smarter.2 weeks ago, I bought freezer friendly Tupperware and started making double and triple batches of stuff. Making lunch size portions for me and my girls to freeze. They are on fall break this week, which I didn't think about.. but it's a total blessing. We will have yummy and quick lunch options available.

Brooms and mops need to be stored not with food ! Dog food and human food should be separate, small appliances should be kept in one area of your pantry, I have to be organized and do my pantry. We have an upright freezer with ice and ice cram and that’s it. A very large deep freezer for Raw meat only, pork, beef . Smaller deep freezer for bread flour, fresh fruit, from Summer harvest. All of my canning is kept in our pantry my Cowboy made for me, we don’t have a basement we have a attic for our kids college junk, and such we are now empty nesters we raised 8 kids and I used to stock pile with coupons years ago not anymore, we have gone from a family of 10 to just us 2 and it’s been tough adjusting to cook for just the 2 of us I will say I’m still a very wise shopper and when meat is on sale if it’s something we eat I will buy $100.00 worth. We live on a fixed income but we budget the Dave Ramsey way, Debt is dumb & Cash is king 👑 I learned that stock piling crackers they just would not keep fresh they had a stake taste even tho remained crispy. I cook only from scratch and homemade we don’t have leftovers anymore that’s how much I have gotten cooking for 2 down to a science ❤️ I believe you can stock pile and be happy 😃 but I also believe it can also become very addicting and of course not in a good way due to feeling you have to go out to buy even if you have 10 boxes of cereal to me that’s not cost effective. Unless you give to Food Shelters or to the Homeless Shelters in the means of from your stock pile your really wasting a lot of your money 💴. When I stock piled laundry soap it wasn’t the best choice because it would become goopy and thickened and oh my goodness not anymore I can’t deal with that kind of mess anymore. I use power laundry soap and liquid both. The hand soaps I use the foam it stretches further although in the shower we use bar soap it’s not wasteful (with guests or Grands) God bless you ❤️

Think Butler's Pantry for organization. All appliances together from top to bottom not across a shelf. Do the same for Canning supplies. Then visit the grocery's baking isle great layout design. Visiting the places you acquire your supplies always helps me get the clear picture for my pantry laid out. Good Luck!!!

They’re fun and informative, I love your style and your family (especially the youngest boy who likes to photobomb and is so adorable) and they help to keep my mind off what is currently going on in our world. Thanks for making these videos and keep up the great work!!

Hi l am a newbie and I have just watched you organise your pantry because you said that a subscriber told you how to do it. I must say that I love the way the organised one looks. Since you did ask for suggestions in the future video about places to organise l would say that the OCD me is wondering why you have boxes of clothes everywhere? How do you know where to find what you need in a hurry? I wou suggest arranging stuff on the shelves according to type, like shelf one and two food and within that all the same type of food together like you did with your cereal. Like grains, cans, pasta, etc. Shelf 3,would be appliances and camping stuff , and other technology and technical stuff and finally shelf 4 clothes and gifts and bedding. BTW l love your chanel

Hi 👋 used to stock pile and coupon . But it got so that I had bought more then I could use up in a good amount of time . So I now shop by the week . So mush easer for me to keep track of . And I save more money for my family I feel . But your stock pile looks just fine . If it works for you then please go with it . It just wasn’t my thing . But I still use my coupons . They really do help . And I now have a smaller stock pile I can better handle . And food doesn’t go to waste for us . Nice meeting you good site you have . Take care , Sharon , ps it’s my moms site mine is down . ☺️👍👌

Our old chest freezer was from my first husbands mom n dad and we passed it on , it’s still running and they bought it in the 1970’s . I bought stand up freezer that it NOT frost free as if storing meat your freezer needs to be one you defrost as frost free will dedicate your meat ect .

I do have some stupid layout stuff in my house. My kitchen floorspace is huge, but it's not designed efficiently so we basically have a whole lot of floor, no counter space, and very little cupboard space. The pantry is in the basement under the stairs, which is a good use of the space under the stairs but kind of silly considering the size of the kitchen. Our laundry room is also huge and connected to one large den/living room when the space could have easily been a small laundry room, den, and a bedroom if it weren't such a weird layout.

Its not too much ifou are using and eating the items. My ultimate goal is to have a 3 to 6 month working pantry and 1 year long term storge. I had back problems and surgery several years ago and our pantry reduced the costs and stress during that hard time.. Not to be judgey, just sharing my exlerience, I find when I mix different types of things on the shelves it makes it look cluttery and out of control, I think if you would organize like things together it wouldnt feel too much, this tip helped my pantry to work better and be much easier to see what we had and what was needed. You are doing great for your family thanks for sharing

@davej7458

People do not ever use the word hoarding in regard to your or any one else's food stores. Hoarding is the act of taking unfair amounts of something when it is being rationed. For example certain kinds of food during a war or famine. If you are hoarding, people and particularly the government feel justified taking that food or what ever and redistributing how ever they see fit. Hoarding is a disgusting immoral practice. Storing food when it is generally avalable is not hoarding. Think what you are saying.
