How I have reduced damage to my crops by the Queensland Fruit Fly in Melbourne, Victoria.

Hopefully it works for you Paul. I'm thinking of using 30% shade cloth as a cheaper option as to exclusion netting (most fruit fly netting blocks 20% of sun anyway) and grouping my trees underneath some kind of structure. Could double as another chicken run too - provided I protect the trees from them. 🤣

I had so many fruit flies this time around. My cucurbits kept getting hit. My Tommy toe tomatoes have never been hit and they taste so good, happy with them giving them a miss though 😅

I removed and disposed of around 100 ripe rocoto peppers, it's definitely the main attraction for FF. I didn't have these kinds of concerns before getting a rocoto plant. I'm leaving the smaller green fruit on hoping they'll be left alone over winter when I cover the plant with FF net. My Ben Hur is yet to give a decent fruit in the 10 years it's been inground. I even get birds tearing through netting biting figs and apples! I envy people who can grow fruit naturally without all this constant savagery.

Have you read about the "sterile insect technique" The govt uses it to eradicate fruit fly and mosquitoes. Hopefully they get serious with in in Victoria in the coming years!

@@UrbanBounty No I haven't. I hope something is done before all is lost.

Hopefully, you can get on top of the issue, looks like it's helping so far 🤞

Thanks Peter, if it's a cold winter it will kill a lot of them off.

Ricoto Chilli is definitely their favourite but they do attack other fruits as well. They ruined my doughnut peaches crop in spring but didn't attack any fig or pomegranate. I have to net all fruit anyway due to birds. Now i just use the fruit fly netting on everything. Mostly set and forget. All worth it when tasting the fruits 😊

Good to hear that you are sticking with it mate. Our best bet now is that the govt gets serious and uses some of the scientific eradication methods that they have used elsewhere

🤣, thanks Doug. Rocoto should come with a disclaimer. It's like heroin to these beasties

That's true Brett, if these things become endemic here on top of the birds, frost, drought it will be almost not worth trying anymore. I dropped about 15k to 20k litres of water in the garden beds this fortnight which took forever by hand, if I have to net also, almost not worth it

Great effort with that. The area arround my work in SA is now a red zone.

Gday mate, great to hear from you 👍 I've been reading about the "sterile insect technique" that govts have used in the past to completely eradicate these types of pests. Hopefully they do something like that near your work. These things are brutal

Lol, it seems to be the go to for the fruit fly and the plant seems hardier than banana
