I think DJ will quiet a lot of his haters this year. The Norvell effect you guys talked about is real. I just hope everyone around him steps up. That was quite the deep dive, but it really paints the full picture on DJ. The QB comparison at the end was cool, too. If JJ McCarthy can get a ring, so can DJ! 😤 Enjoyed the show, guys! Go Noles!

DJ will not be able to out run backfield pressure and create something out of nothing. What he brings is a big strong arm. He brings a huge wrecking ball short yardage keep the chains moving. If the WR are able to consistently catch the ball this team has potential to put up more yardage and many more points. Its going to be different for sure and certainly no knock on Travis he was special in his own rights. DJ should be in position to have lots of speed at his disposal. Norvell will put him in a good spot. Ready for the season start. Let's go! Fear the Spear!

@RaisedCane-qn3ts True, Travis is special with gifted athletic abilities. DJ U is going to bring a more regular QB pocket passer approach. He will also have more speedy WR. It's going to be interesting to see how he fits and how Offense attacks. Deferent does mean better or worse is just different. Hope the haters all get their last minute hating in while they can. FSU has reloaded and will be just if not more dangerous this year. Fear the Spear!
@RaisedCane-qn3ts3 ай бұрын
@@MRooks-u5l I agree with the take that different doesn't necessarily mean better or worse, and football is a dynamic, team sport with a lot of moving parts - I think that's why we love it. With regards to DJU, I am concerned that his limited mobility and ability to read defenses, along with the speed at which he goes through his reads, will be difficult for the O line to protect. While at Clemson (ACC play), he was sacked 43 times with an O line that was very good. I think that the interior of the O line with Roddick's departure and Washington moving to LT makes DJU vulnerable up the middle, which is particularly difficult for him to deal with. What do you think?
@MRooks-u5l3 ай бұрын
It's fair to expect more sacks. If we are going to try and throw the ball further and he's doesn't move even close to as well as Travis. It leads to more sacks. Travis tended to hold onto the ball for a really long time, but he was able to get away with it do yo his athletic abilities. DJ U is more experienced now than the Clemson days and not sure how good the WR were when he was there. Shipley to me is the only reason Clemson has scored the ball at all for the past 3 years. Oline and Dline top priorities at Clemson for sure. I think there will be plays DJ U will have to give up on a throw it away that Travis would turn into an amazing play and either a TD or first down. But rewatchinh some of the games from last year. Travis seems to take 2 or 3 quarters to get tge team going. Much like Winston years. If DJ U can get outta the gates sooner and get up early often we might not need all the late excitement and drama.

I don't doubt DJs capabilities. I don't doubt Norvell's capabilities. It will be interesting to see what Norvell can do with DJ in a year. It would have been even more interesting had DJ just committed to Fsu out of high-school ! Imagine what Norvell could have accomplished with this young man's development in that time span. Best of luck to DJ ! It's hard not to respect a hard worker !

I definitely understand what you're saying because I'm a BIG fan of Luke. I think he's the future at QB. I still think it's Brock as QB2 this year, but I wouldn't necessarily pencil him in as a starter next season. I guess it also depends on the situation. I'm hoping DJ does well so we can 1) be good lol and 2) let that competition play out in the spring.

Will DJU be able to reduce the number of sacks taken (43 in 2 years at Clemson), and will he be able to improve his reading of defenses and his decision-making going through his reads.
@plantthespear3 ай бұрын
I think he will be able to do both, of course, there's context. For sacks, I have him with 40 in 2 years and 43, including 2020. Last year at Oregon State, that 20 per season number dropped to 11. His pressure-to-sack percentage also dropped dramatically from 18.9% to 8.7%. I will mention that he did have fewer dropbacks, but he was more efficient in the pocket with pressure. Only 1 less throwaway than 2022 despite 76 fewer dropbacks. With a snap filter applied to the Power 5 QBs, DJ was top 5 in lowest pressure-to-sack percentage, top 15 in fewest percentage of QB owned pressures, and FSU was top 20 in pass block efficiency last year and we expect the OL to be much better in 2024. At the same time, he'll probably be throwing a lot of deep passes, which take time to set up. He'll be facing a few really good defensive lines this year, too. So, I would still expect the 10-15 range. As for the reads, I can only trust the coaching will help. Norvell has a good history with QBs, including JT. Do I think DJ will be night and day better? No. But even small improvements in a good offense could lead to him being successful. I also think the in-helmet communication might help him understand what they see and want him to see, too. I guess we'll see.
@RaisedCane-qn3ts3 ай бұрын
@@plantthespear I think the decrease in dropback plays at Oregon St. had a huge impact on reducing sack numbers, and kudos to the OC for helping his QB. However, his completion percentage was pretty low @57.1% which was a regression to numbers closer to his 2021 campaign. DJU has shown he can keep his int's in the single digits and that is a plus. I wish the kid nothing buy the best given what Dabo did with the whole situation, using DJ as an scapegoat for a bad OC hire. However, I am a Miami fan so I won't be cheering for him at Hard Rock. Go Canes!
@plantthespear3 ай бұрын
That's definitely fair 😅 I do think DJU will be in the best position to have his best season at FSU. His completion percentage was down last year, but almost every other metric improved. One of the things that brought that down was a high number of drops on the easy throws (behind the line of scrimmage). How much of that was on DJ vs. the receivers, I'm not sure. DJ had the lowest completion percentage on BLOS throws in Power 5 last year (76.7%), but also had the 6th highest drop rate by his receivers. He completed 91.8% of those throws in 2022 at Clemson with a lower drop rate, so that makes me believe he can make those throws, and I'm not overly concerned about it. It still needs to get cleaned up, though. Norvell has only had 1 full season starting QB finish with a sub-60% completion percentage, and it was 59.9%. I don't expect DJ to be near 70%, but I see him finishing above 60%. A lot will depend on what others do around him.
@RaisedCane-qn3ts3 ай бұрын
@plantthespear That is a pretty sound analysis and won't be far from what actually happens. However, I think there are factors still unknown, like interior O line play and how good the WR's hands are, and whether they can help their QB in games. If the drops seen in practice so far continue and that chemistry doesn't materialize, it'll get inside DJU's head. Is there any word on who'll be starting in the G spots? I haven't seen anything official from the staff, but I've seen conflicting depth charts with Ferguson and Leonard changing places.
@plantthespear2 ай бұрын
I would project those as the 2 starters as well. Although, I'd also keep my eye on Kieondre Jones. He's a heck of a run blocker, and we're going to be a run heavy team. We have about 4-5 guys who I would trust on the interior. We need Maurice to stay healthy at center because he's by far the best snapper, though. My biggest concern is at wide receiver. Outside of Malik Benson, I'm not sold on some of the veteran guys. Ja'Khi will be good in the slot, but who will be the other outside guy? We need either Poitier, Williamson, or Hykeem to step into that role. Elijah Moore is another name to watch. He's had a standout camp, and even though he's a freshman, he could see the field if he's the best one of the group. I think we will run the ball well, but this offense won't be flawless.

Ah, ok. Man, I tried to get it finished this year, but I've had some things happen personally that just didn't allow the time. I apologize for not getting it done. I had all intentions on being out, but it's a lot of work for basically one person on a part-time basis. We are going to record multiple episodes before the season, and I'm going to work on some articles, too. I have a lot of research to go from. It was just having to write all that and put it in magazine form that takes so long.
