To host a multiplay session you only need to forward ports 6112 and (probably) 27016 to your server. You don't need to open ports in Window's firewall. (Portforwarding wasn't necessary with GamesSpy).To join a session you only have to sign in.

As an FSX veteran, I really appreciated your thoughts, you really offered a fair and valid view. Based on what you said and what I seen, I will recommend casual users to the steam edition, but for hardcore users stick with the disks and the knowledge we've shared over the years. Not being critical of Dovetail, but I agree with your analysis about being more than nothing but a distribution platform. That being said, the only time I buy their Train Sim software is when it is on a Steam Sale, so there will be some bargains to be had in the future I'm sure for everyone. Thanks for your video, I'll be subbing and checking back often.

I made What I think is a decent video from several of flights I would think that fellow flight simmers would enjoy. How do you load up video to Steam ? Also could you do video on the GPS. Wish Steam would have a 737-XXX aircraft for download. All the best. Well done.

Ugh. What wouldn't we give for a few simple developments on FSXI? Things like: - 64 Bit - DX10 compliant - Makes full use of High End video cards and reduces CPU load Just these things alone would make it worth buying and development wise, it's a doddle. I'd happily pay £40 ($60 US) for that and I feel sure many of us would. If they added in a replacement for EZDOK, they'd have my money now! :)

I have tried X-Plane 10 and while I like it, I just find the graphics to be much less appealing. One of the things that makes flight simulation enjoyable for me is immersion. Going from FSX to X-Plane 10 seems like a graphical step backwards (other than clouds and shadow effects which are awesome). I'm also reticent because of the lack of third party support.

***** Alpilotx makes free/donationware HD mesh scenery for most of the world. Simheaven has free photoscenery for most of the world. Free sky colors and textures from Realistic Sky Colors. Thousands of freeware (and payware), airports, planes, and cities. For even more payware, there is skymaxx, urbanmaxx, etc... IMO, X-Plane's community is better, and its default scenery destroys fsx (not trying to be biased, its an honest opinion). Lets face it - compare STOCK fsx with STOCK X-Plane..... Ppl comparing fsx with Orbx, PMDG (which is coming to X-Plane soon with the release of the 744 v2), rex, etc... with the stock version of X-Plane is completely unfair. X-Plane has no Out of Memory Errors, etc... As you can probably tell, I prefer X-Plane, but I do see the value is FSX. Just keep in mind fsx isn't the future.... the replacement that Dovetail is making is. Just hope it doesn't turn out like TS2015. Edit - Also, X-Plane has more realistic flight physics :)

Hi flightsim481. I value your opinion and reviews, they are well done, concise and to the point. I was wondering if you had a chance to view Jordan Kings videos showing back to back comparison of high memory use scenery crashing the boxed version of FSX, while the FSX-SE version grinds though it? Certainly he has a very high end system, but it would seem that the SE version perhaps is more efficient at using memory and processors? He also noted that Pete Dawson of FSUIPC has praised the cleaner code in the SE version. Your thoughts?
@flightsim4819 жыл бұрын
RAM55 Hi, yes I have to say, I'm quite impressed with the stability of FSX Steam and I only have what I would consider to be a mid range system. What's more it seems to tolerate more programs running in the background for me. I haven't measured the memory use, but in fairness I feel that Jordan's videos are very good and well informed, so his findings are definitely worth listening to. I personally like his videos. If Pete Dawson likes the coding more than legacy FSX then that is high praise indeed. In actual fact, since I moved to Steam, I haven't bothered to re-install FSX Legacy. The only huge disadvantage is that the Steam edition needs an internet connection to work - unless someone has found a way around that. Huge thanks for the support,Rich
@grandpa19559 жыл бұрын
flightsim481 Thanks for the reply. I think all other things being equal, I will switch the to SE version. Not much of a dent in the pocketbook anyway. Some of your other followers mentioned Dovetail is using the income from the Steam version to develop a new version of a flight simulator. Hope so as FSX needs updating to use modern processor power. Still the best flight sim out there in my opinion.

The issue I have is that a number of my just flight disk based addons do not work on this - So far Wilco's 737 PIC, Airbus collection and DC-10 collection will stop as they prepare to install - presumably as they cannot find the program. I don't know if there are any work arounds - DC-10 collection has now been updated with HD as a steam based payware addon (i think you reviewed it) so there is no incentive for Justflight to help get the disk version working with steam edition.
@flightsim48110 күн бұрын
Sorry to hear of your difficulties but with most developers have moved to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020/2024, there is not much incentive for them to support older products.
@dogbadger10 күн бұрын
@@flightsim481 It is what it is - some disk based addons detect the steam installation and work ok for the most part, and others don't. That's fine, I don't expect that to change but it would be nice if there was an easily found resource which tells you which do work - either for the person who bought lots of addons in the past, and wants to know if FSX-SE is worth buying OR the owner of FSX-SE who may look to pick up disk addons on the second hand market (which would certainly be cheaper than those that are listed on steam)

@flightsim4819 жыл бұрын
+Xittin Anas Hi, I'm not sure if it can be easily done in FSX. In theory, you can take off, configure for a landing, go into the map and manually change altitude, lat and long, heading and speed then save the scenario but that is tremendously laborious. Alternatively just fly to your desired start point for your chosen exercise, pause and save the scenario. Other than that, the only easier way to do it is via a payware program called FSIPanel.

I feel there will be a push towards X-Plane and DCS just because of the limitations of 32 bit platforms. I think next gen will be more about the environment with more detailed systems regarding air masses, icing, winds, rain, changes in runway brakng action and so on. Several companies have nailed high fidelity aircraft or airport sceneries but I feel the next big step for realism is in making the skies live. I guess ;-)

@flightsim48110 жыл бұрын
Frankie Calizan No problem Frankie. You need pretty much the same computer to run FSX Steam as you did for the old FSX. The key difference is that FSX Steam edition works better with Windows 8.1 Ultimately though, they are the same basic program. You don't 'need' a powerful computer. People get hung up on the idea of having huge computers so they can make everything look amazing. My computer (albeit a self build) cost £600 and I run FSX, FSX Steam, P3D and X-Plane without any problems. What I do though, is adjust my settings and expectations. My machine won't allow me to max out all the settings, so I just set it up with the levels I feel happy with. As you can see with most of my videos, I get reasonable results. What I would say, is don't expect too much from FSX (either version) if using and AMD processor. FSX prefers Intel, although I don't personally know why. Personally, unless you already own it, you might find it hard to get hold of FSX Gold, on a disk for a reasonable price. Most add on producers have products either compatible with Steam version, or are updating their products to work with Steam, so I would certainly look at it. Personally, I quite like it, I'm just waiting for Active Skies Next to move to it and then I'll be happier with the Steam version.

If you have a well optimised FSX which is stable, then I'm not sure I would bother changing. Some have experienced an improved frame rate, but that may be for a number of reasons. I didn't really get much change in frame rate.
@JayBoii4TM10 жыл бұрын
You say mess with the sliders when it comes to scenery. What do you mean?
@flightsim48110 жыл бұрын
When you go into the advanced scenery menu of the display options, you are faced with a number of tick boxes and sliders. If you slide them all to the right and 'max' everything out, you may well have an experience of slow, stuttering frames rates. Some good systems can handle it, most can't. So you need to reduce the settings by moving sliders to the left and possibly unticking certain boxes. It all depends on your set up. Put all the sliders to the left you will have a very fast, very ugly sim. All the way to the right, beauty but possibly with frame rates in single figures. Put on some demanding add ons, and frame rates drop significantly. Somewhere in the middle will be the best balance, but the individual settings are up to you. For example, if you generally fly airliners at high altitude, you may not want the ground scenery settings that high, and so may turn them down in favour of more cloud density/effects. If you enjoy low level visual flying in mountains, you may want to have good ground scenery of textures, detail and autogen, but may be willing to sacrifice cloud density or lighting effects. Here in lies the key. There are no 'perfect' settings. There are settings that are good for what you want to fly and how you want to enjoy that experience. I would suggest, take screen shots of the default settings and then play around at adjusting each slider to see what it does, and if you like the change. I would only ever change one slider/selection at a time, and take a screen shot each time you do it, so you can always go back. It is a slow process but is very, very good at getting the best you can from your machine.

***** I agree. On the same settings I have seen no performance change from FSX to FSX:SE. Granted it is more stable on my system (others may have different experiences) but Dovetail have not indicated any change in the core program (if there had been, I'm sure they would have shouted about it from the rooftops). I wouldn't have expected any given that they didn't code the original game, and to redesign it would take huge personal and financial investment IMHO. What we have is the same old FSX IMHO, just a different distribution framework, installer and making it more friendly with Windows 8.1. I'm not aware of any changes in the graphics department performance wise.

My favourite plane for FSX is the Spit - now there is a classic. A2A did a great job there. From what you say, the steam edition isn't that much better than FSX with Acceleration pack. Cheers - an ol' RF-4c driver.

pretty hypocritical of you to criticize rails sims dlc business model since its the same for flight sim too. no one buys every single addon for flight sim, you buy what interests you. same for train sim.

Hi, AimHawk. Sorry, but there was no intent to come over as critical of the business model. As I hope my video emphasised, I found the download, install and stability of FSX Steam to be excellent. My concern really is more to do with the potential of only having one single distributor, allied to the fact that many may (or may not) be faced with having to spend hundreds of pounds if they wanted to migrate to FSX Steam but found they needed to repurchase their add ons. Apologies if my remarks caused confusion.

***** lol what? its the same type of hobby and same buisness model. you buy trains/planes that you want. compare the routes for train sim to orbx regions.
