This was good of you to work this out for us, Jordon. Very well done, I think, and I did watch both videos, and not just once. For the moment, I'm in a happy place with the boxed version, having re-installed earlier in the year after a hard-drive failure. Things are quite sweet at the moment, but I know this is temporary - you're normally just one extra download or add-on away from misery. Nice to have Steam waiting in the wings knowing it should handle my FSX needs handily. I have purchased, and I'm happy it's on my drive waiting to go. A big thing for me is having compatibility with my Orbx scenery, and that's a given. Same stands for most of my livery add-ons. Thanks again, you provided the community with valuable testing and advice, and I for one appreciate it.

Hay just found your tube. I have just added fsx steam after 6 years flying fsx boxed. First impression are very positive. I've had a systems failure today so doing a complete re-install of steam. @ 7:55 What is the process explorer? Is that something that's standard on everyone's computer, or is that a special program you installed to monitor your VAS? May I ask how I would go about monitoring my VAS usage stock without addon software? Or can it be done? Also, I'm a 64-bit windows 7 user, so is it a non-issue for me? EDIT: Okay, since typing this reply I have been told the Process Explorer is a separate addon download which I now have. My question though is which number am I reading to interpret the "mounting level of VAS"? And my question still stands as to whether my computer being a 64-bit, does that exempt me from the 4GB limit, or the FSX program being a 32-bit program, I'm still subject to the limits others are?

Im a long time fsx user and With this video im seriously considering fsx steam edition over P3D just for money saving measures. Are you testing in this video with preview dx10 enables? Do you reccomend using it with dx10 preview?

Jordan, I'm a little confused. When you mentioned testing the VAS and seeing how long it takes to hit 4 GB and then it's game over-- I was under the presumption that it's a count that continues to climb and can't go backwards, as you fly the sim. Did I misunderstand? Because into your flight as you're near Ontario, you mentioned that you lost VAS but that you then gained it back as soon as you left the heavy areas. So is the VAS count something that's constantly going up and down? Or does the count just move in one direction?

How do you get such a good resolution? Please tell me ive been struggling to find it for like 4-5 weeks now. I litrualy see my game in pixels. I can see the pixels... I have a completly new pc and a 4k screen so i dont know why its acting up..

tnx 4 sharing. u mention these settings r demanding on ur system but dint tell us wat system ur running though? wouldn't diff' computers handle settings in diff' ways? it would B nice to know wat resolution and cpu/gpu ur using so we could get an idea how it relates to OUR computers:)

Nice video But perhaps you should do the same test in dx9 with the pmdg 777 and see if you get an oom that is what i am waiting upon before i purchase fsx steam

I think the point is that FSX cannot come close to this VAS performance. So it is simply a choice of the better of the two. When PMDG aircraft finally come to FSX Steam I will run the tests again, but I tested this same configuration with FSX DX10 and it didnt even make it past KLGB.

Thanks Jordan I did some on my LOD_7.5 wideview=true and scheduler=62 etc.. I started installing some of my 400gigs worth of addons but hit a break wall as there are to many incompatibility with FSX_SE, even more when you use 3 PC's on a network. the only ones with no problem like Project Magenta that uses FSUIPC and wide server fine. But I like Orbx and other that are not ready for prime time. So I am most definitely keep my FSX box for the time being and slowly making a transition to FSX_SE. I have posted on AVsim some your KZbin videos, I hope you don't mind as it it very informative.

How do you achieve this, im running - OC 4.5GHz i5 3570K - GTX TITAN 6GB - 16GB ram - 1TB SSD (4x 250GB SSD's running in RAID 0 giving 1.2GB/s [not bits, yeah 1.2Gigabytes read write]) Im running the PMDG 737NGX from ENTO (Torp X form aerosoft, has incredibly high res airport) to Mega Airport OSLO V2 from aerosoft. It NEVER crashes, i think it has some mechanism to prevent it, but it glitches out completely, all textures slowly turn black making it look horrible, not to mention to beeping sound from windows saying out of memory. For me, FSX SE, is better than FSX, but by no way does it fix the problem, at least for me!

+NorwegianVikingMods Update here Very very interesting, i went into my REX 4 on steam DLC, put down all the texture for sky from 4096 to 2048, and the 2048 ones to 1024, and most of the settings to medium instead of ultra, for some reason this made a hude difference, before i could only have the scenery settings on medium low, now i can put them up to max, almost like you have, all on max except mesh, texture scale, rest almost max, no crash, maybe the REX 4 memory management is less optimized than default FSX inside the FSX code. Anyways interesting test!

+NorwegianVikingMods Another thing you can do is change the max texture resolution to 1024x1024 or 2048x2048. That will also help. You can do this by reducing the global texture resolution setting in the graphics tab by 1 or 2 notches.
