I attended basic training at Ft. Benning GA from October 1966 to December 1966. The location of our boot camp training area was Harmony Church.
On the way back from Florida to Ohio, I stopped at Harmony Church to see what the old place looked like. It was January 7, 1992. The barracks, mess halls, and other structures were still there but most of the buildings had been stripped of the asbestos shingles that made up the siding. I'm sure it wasn't long after that all the buildings were then demolished.

A Co, 4/36 "Bushmasters". Basic and AIT just 4 yrs before this video was made. Low crawled across that pt field as well as sweated on it. Felt sick seeing the buildings I lived and trained in during the summer of '88 abandoned and trashed like that. Thanks for the memories.

D-4-36 1988. The one thing I remember was on top of our barracks door had a sign. It read, “ Through these doors have walked the greatest infantrymen in the world” WOW! That really knocked me for a loop because I knew it is true because of my grandfathers and their stories they told me, well I knew I had some big shoes to fill. I hope I made them proud in Heaven I gave it my very best

Bravo 8-2 1985/86 Harmony Church. Old WWII barracks, you could see threw the floors. Central air, a brroken window on one end a busted door on the other. Wouldnt of changed anything. A shame its no longer there. Kids today have no idea.

Went through Harmony Church in the Summer of 1984...C-4-2. I didn't realize the Church had been abandoned that soon after I left. I was at Benning in 2011, but most of the area where our battalion sat was overgrown and I couldn't make out any landmarks.

Wow! What memories!! Where did the years go? Thank you for sharing this! D-2-2 Summer of 1986. Drill Sergeants Borum and Bledsoe and LTC (and CMoH recipient) Walter Marm was the Battalion Commander. In January 91 I got called back to the Army for the First Gulf War and spent a couple weeks at Benning before heading off across the Atlantic. One day I went by and walked around Harmony Church and, by then, the barracks were still there but were all deserted. Very eerie.

Interesting to see what came before. I attended OSUT at Harmony Church last year. The entire area is completely different now and there is a motorpool over where the barracks in this video once stood. In many areas though, old foundations were still visible. I would've loved to have had time just to explore the woods at Benning. I found so much cool shit while out in the field. Lots of WWII-Vietnam era relics just rusting away.

That theatre was cleaned at night by my dad and brother and I can hear the soldiers running and marching there. My dad was responsible for troop supply for Sand Hill and Harmony Church. One Sunday he took me with him when he went to make sure some new soldiers had what they needed for bedding, etc. It impressed me greatly that he went out of his way to serve them. I had asked him why. And he explained that they needed a place to sleep. Worked for me.

I was stationed there from 1989-1991 with HHC 2/29 INF which was the core of range instructors for the Infantry School. We were in slightly newer buildings not far away. You filmed this video 5 months after I PCS'd to Panama. I was a mechanic for the Hummers we had and I was the recovery guy with the tow truck. By then, Basic and OSUT was moved to Sand Hill and newer barracks built in the 80s. The theater you showed we used for award ceremonies and stuff. While I was there we called it Old Harmony Church. Also, Camp Darby was next to my motor pool where Ranger School is. My time at Ft. Benning was pretty good and I worked with a lot of good people. Thanks for sharing this. It brought up some memories for me.

I was at Harmony church in 1988. Eco. 1/38 Infantry. Out in the middle of nowhere. Think it was 3-5 miles to road march to the church on Sundays. For a while at pt formation in the morning when they'd do roll call, never failed each platoon would report one are two men awol. Senior drill finally had enough and came out and talked to everyone in the company and the awols stopped.

Interesting that a lot of National Guard folks went to harmony church. Mean a buddy also went there on that split program we did summer of 83 and 8483 at harmony church in 84 at sand hill. I was so bummed to finally take the family out there and show them the place and it was all gone! Thanks for the video this helps a lot! I remember one time getting in a shouting match with the active duty trainees we were yelling no livers to them and they were calling us a bunch of nogos I guess it all changed with the Iraq war as a lot of national guides and them going over seas.

Hi Steve, we took basic training at the same time. I was in E-5-2. I was in the first platoon with an Army Ranger as our D.I. and a Puerto Rican sargeant as assistant D.I. Every morning we would pass by Harmony Church Chapel on our way out to the day's activities. We had the big P.I. field right across the way. I remember the barracks well. Considering that they had been built as temporary barracks for WWII, they sure held up well. Were we in the same company, please let me know. It was hard training but I sure loved it. I understand that the Army has kept several of these barracks as the Army Museum. Did you make your way over to Vietnam?

I was at A-10-2 in Aug-Nov 1986. I remember the gym because we would go there for Pay Day after a road march either to training or coming back from the Malone Ranges to get our pay. Back then there was a movie theatre there where after AIT Maximum Overdrive and Halloween II. Me and 15 other guys were put on detail to clean 9-2 barracks before Airborne School for Zero Week. This video brought back memories for me during those days. Many bad times and hardships as a younger man back those days.

Steve are you from Lafayette, LA? Attended basic at Harmony Church 2nd Training Batt 3rd Plt A 1/38th. Drill Sgt Cameron, Bland, and another. I came back during Desert Storm for IOBC & Bradley Commander Course as a 2nd Lt and stayed on the Main Post in the octagon shaped dormitory barracks down the road from the jump towers . Went back years later, probably in the early to mid1990's . . . I cried. They had a transportation company there and my barracks was completely gone with high grass growing where it had been.
