Adding Baffle Plates + Fuel Level Sensor Probe to the Aluminum Tank and a Fuel Level Gauge Instrument to the Cockpit of my self build one seat ultralight helicopter. The Baffle Plates will help to reduce the fuel- weight shift rate in the Tank to get a more stable flight condition mainly in hover and a slower shift-rate in center of gravity when changing flight control inputs.
This is part 59 of the EXPERIMENTAL HELICOPTER BUILD SERIES

Trying to be supportive but, I don't think having the fuel tank below you is a good idea if you do have a hard landing it will rupture and splash fuel all over you, or at least around you. Two cylindrical tanks either side around shoulder height placed vertically would be safer, lighter and not require baffling. The fuel tank looks like it's your secondary crumple zone now. Also using checker plate just adds unnecessary weight. The tank looks about 30 litres 45X45X15 cm? Two cylinders made from 2mm aluminium with a diameter of 22cm and height of 40cm would weigh about 3.8kg including end caps with a capacity of 30 litres. You save 2.8 kg. Bridge them and have a little filter with a glass bowl for water inspection. If you use 1.6mm you could save another 800 grams. Thumbs up.

Thanks for your supportive comment. While in the first test-flight stage i prefer the weight of the tank and fuel low to the ground to prevent a dynamic roll-over, also the thought of fuel tanks beside me near the head sounds not what i like the most. But for weight reduction and better safety aspects in case a hard landing i keep this in mind for a future update... thank you i really appreciate it

@ultralighthelicopter your chopper has quite a low centre of gravity, not much crumple zone beneath you. You could have one small tank up high and just partially fill it. If you want more weight down low, you could just strap on some steel for take off and hover testing. With a flat bottom tank, you will require more fuel in it than you need, just so the pick up is not starved of fuel. For testing and learning to fly I would not fill it with more than 5 litres. You could even use a large fire extinguisher as ballast at the bottom with a cable to activate it. I would also encourage a firewall between yourself and engine and fuel tank, just a thin sheet of aluminium. If you have a hard landing and fuel tank ruptures along with landing gear and the roll over fuel will flow on to you. I see the control linkage horn as a can opener for that fuel tank.

"Aviation" fuel tanks needs a sump and drain method. Water in tank needs to be checked and drain every day, more with a two stroke engine. Drain and fly with fresh mixture is a must.

The only way I see that the fuel tank could be drained at is to loosen up & take off the fuel hose from the bottom neck connection!

Your workmanship is incredible and I have enjoyed every episode. As the Robertson R44 had fuel tank issues on hard landings (ruptured tanks, resulting fire) do you have enough framing around it to prevent it being damaged in that situation? Thanks.

In my opinion, the area of \u200b\u200bthe fuel tank is very large, alternating overloads in flight can lead to air entering the fuel line and with a remainder of 1/4, problems with fuel intake are possible. At the outlet of the fuel intake, it is necessary to weld a 1-1.5 liter analyzer.

Ok so far I’ve agreed with you. Now I don’t. You should weld tabs onto the chromoly tube and weld aluminum tabs to the tank then bolt them together. That gives the dissimilar metals a point of relief between them. That bent aluminum tab is too much of a stress point during vibration. The chromoly tab needs to be the bent tab not the aluminum tab. A word of warning on that fuel level sender, i recently used one just the same on my kit car fuel tank, and it gave me no end of troubles. The center connection was very flaky and the Guage was intermittent. I finally made it work, but it took some modification. I I was to do it again I would use a different one.

Do not use low vent filter, or use fuel bypass vent in case of emergency if the filter is blocked
