I agree with most points you made in the video and it was a hard decision for me to make. I like the faster buffer of the X-H2 (thanks to Cfexpress), I like the bigger grip and the screen. However I prefer the dedicated buttons for ISO & shutter speed on the X-T5. Eventually I chose the X-H2 (coming from an X-t4) and after spending some time I found the PASM dials not as bad as expected and am happy with my choice.

Same here.....I chose the XH2 because of the hand grip, CFEXPRESS, full size HDMI, speed buffering, 8k, better EVF, and articulating screen, and pro res for the extra 300.00 it was a worthy upgrade to my XT4. In the future I may get a XH 2s, but maybe by then it will be a higher mp with a stack sensor. If not I still can choose the XH2S as is. I somewhat miss the old school dials,but not by much. I see your point, but the size thing is subjective because I have large hands, and being smaller than the XT4 is a nay no for me.

Love the XH2, thought I’d miss the dials on the XT3 but I don’t As regards the zoom function on playback this can be done by pressing the joystick in, so no big deal for me

Another excellent video Chris. To me, photography is about the entire creative experience-the look, feel, weight, size, controls, menus and even the sound of the camera, and the thrill of capture, combined with the image output, the artistic expression, the praise from others, and maybe the money you receive. I think you get this and your reviews are moving towards recognizing this more.

I bought my X-H2 before the details of the X-T5 were confirmed. I knew this was risky, but wanted to upgrade before leaving on a major international photo trip. Now that I've used the X-H2 heavily for about 2 months, and seen the X-T5, I have zero regrets. I have used many different cameras over the years, but was coming most immediately from the X-S10. So I was already very comfortable with the PASM dial, and remain a big fan of the flippy screen. I also prefer the much more substantial grip, better EVF, and ability to use CF Express cards to minimize buffer issues when shooting at faster frame rates. And all this from a photographer who almost never shoots video---so its not just a "use case" question...

Everyone is different. I still like the X-S10, and have retained it as a back-up body, and for situations where I want a smaller and lighter kit, including some street photography excursions. But as someone who mostly shoots landscapes, I definitely appreciate the many benefits of the X-H2.

Surprised you did not add the difference in EVF for both cameras. No plans to move off my X-T4 for now, but the higher res EVF (as found with the X-H2) is something I want to see in any next camera. In practical use, do you notice enough difference between the two? Love your videos, keep it going!

I have used the XT5 and own an XH2. You do notice a difference. It's a 2 million dot difference after all. The 3 million dot EVF on the XT5 is by no means bad, it is acceptable, but the XH2 is far better. It makes the XT5 feel like an XT4. I would recommend waiting until the XT6 if you don't plan on moving to an XH2.

I like your point about every camera having a level of compromise. I've found the X-H2 to be a perfect compromise between my old Canon and Nikon heavy gear and my preferred Fujifilm aesthetics. As much as I love the top dials on my other Fujis, I'll take the feel in hand over that (love the super solid grip, and I prefer a wrist strap to putting it over the shoulder). It just might be my favorite camera ever (and I've been shooting steadily since 1977).

Thanks for the video comparison. A very interesting notice..."long-term Fujifilm users" have a similar view to your result. Those of us coming from other systems, wouldn't agree. Whilst the dials and knobs are retro popular, they have become obsolete. Coming from working in the electronics industry for over 40 years, the fact is, mechanical switches and dials have reliability issues. Ask the folks in appliance controls and automotive. XH2 feels better in the hand (balance and steady shooting). The ability for card buffering better. The fact that Fuji (they themselves) are moving (product roadmaps) the trend to convert old users is significant. XH2, XH2S, GFX 100ii and 50Sii. Or as I always say, "The Gear Doesn't Make the Photographer, The Photographer Makes The Photography'. Imagine Ansel Adams thoughts if he were around right now.... G.A.S. (Laughing in the grave I'm sure)

I have the pleasure of owning both the XT5 and the XH2 along with the XT3, both cameras work well, the XH2 is my go to body when I use the 100100-400mm and other larger lens, I shoot stills so video features are not my priority , when I want a smaller form factor and shoot at a slower pace, then the XT3 AND XT5 are my go to bodys.

This was a hard one for me. I wanted the X-T5, but the X-H2 landed in my lap instead. The Flip screen was a major annoyance at first, but it's grown on me a little, especially when during my last shoot I was able to set my tripod and composition from shore and not get soaked in a freezing mountain creek. The PASM dial isn't as bad as I originally assumed, to truth be told I still prefer my X-T1, and X-T3 control dials. The big sticking point for me is oddly enough the battery grip, I like having it there, I haven't put one on the X-H2 yet, but it will be getting slapped on for sure. The X-T5 doesn't give me that option, so, X-H2 will be my go to.

This is exactly me. Wanted an X-T5, but irritated at the plastic dials, the same EVF as my X-H1 from five years ago, and.... well, not made in Japan. Have an X-H2 but the whole PASM thing makes me feel I should just have bought a Nikon if I wanted PASM photography.

I’ve been a Canon shooter professionally for a lifetime and started fiddling around with the XT4 since last year. I mainly got it for traveling, the excellent point & shoot quality, the film presets and the video function with the great 5-axis stabilization. The flippy screen in this case also has my preference. Also I wanted to do more video so If I had the knowledge about the xh2 that I have now I probably would get it instead of the xt4. In all, both models appear to be brilliant though.

For me the main factor is what do you prefer to be able to set quickly using dedicated dials. If you prefer setting shutter speed and ISO using dials, the X-T series is for you. If you prefer choosing custom modes using dials, the X-H series is for you. To give my particular use case: I like being able to change the subject af mode quickly depending on what I am shooting. Three of my custom settings are set for that: people, animals, and birds. If I see something, I can change to the correct mode while grabbing the camera with the camera still off, and take the shot right away. For me the X-H dials are a clear winner. I would imagine that for someone taking more slowly composed photos in full manual mode, the X-T dials are a clear winner. Though you do get used to rotating command dials on the X-H cameras, for something like a landscape taken on a tripod the X-T dials are superior.

At the end of the day, each photographer has to weigh what their individual needs are in a camera. IMO, Fujifilm has given us 3 great options to choose from with regards to the two new H series cameras and the X-T5. So what you use a camera.for, sports/wildlife, vlogging, landscape, street, travel, wedding, portraits, in studio work, I would think, should guide you into which camera is best for you. For me personally, doing landscape, family and travel photography, the X-T5 was a home run. So thank you Fujifilm for giving us such great options to choose from. There is no wrong answer to the question of which camera to pick!

I'm embarrassed to say how many Fujis I have become enamored with. I currently have the XT1, 2,, 3,, 4, and 5!! I have two XPro 2's, one in the beautiful graphite that even when I bought it I admitted it was only because it was beautiful! I still have a black x-Pro2 and love it. I''m an idiot so I also have the XS-10, and mostly for the IBIS, which I love, believe it or not I I also have the X100F, and I'd trade it for the ""V" if I could find one. So far that's the only one I would be willing to trade. Curiosity forced me to acquire,(buy) an XH-! which I have to admit if not for the weight I could love (bad shoulder). That shutter is AMAZING! I'm actually thinking about an X-H2s although I like the screen better on the "1". When I bought the XT-5 I had said give me the 3-way tilt screen of the XT-3 and the Battery in the XT-4, I would not be able resist the XT-5. Well Fuji must have heard me they gave me both. Thank goodness I'm retired military and a VA 100%er with a military retirement, it gives me license to be a bit stupid! I will be trying to sell the XT-4, it's the only one I have a gripe about, That's enough for now, I'm sure, but thanks for reading. And thanks Chris for letting me rant.

Thank you for putting this video together. I've reached a point in my life (more to do with age) that I want to move away from my heavy Nikon gear to something lighter but just as capable. Video is not something I have ever enjoyed getting involved with so for me, I'm looking for a great "photography" camera. I was torn between the X-H2 and the X-T5. Your review has helped me decide to go with the X-T5. It ticks all the boxes and I think it will give me what I'm looking for in landscape photography (with some family photo shoots thrown in). Considering that my current gear has only a fixed screen, the screen type is not at all significant to the choice I'm making. But I can see benefit in the flip screen of the X-T5 when I need to get down low for landscapes. Now I'm really looking forward to getting my X-T5 for Christmas. Cheers from downunder

Thanks Chris for your vision. there's an additional point to give avantage to the X-T5: 2SD cards slots, Who absolutley need an expensive CFEXPRES out side video making process ? For sure the flip screen may is a very bad new, look at Panasonic who associated both technology. By the way, keeping clickable may have been major advantage VS competition, just a dream, one click you from speed to ISO, in front, or aperture VS IS on the back! Anyway, I'm asking myself why do I'm purchasing the XH2S for a more reliable AF? Am I wrong? Regarding the Fuji camera overview, no body speak about Q menus, may be with new pad position it becomes a better powerful tool ? the X-T3 and X-T4 provided me a very sensitive emotions, when I Went out from the Nikon D750, it was a comeback the source of photography. PASM is an other approach, nor better or worst. Now coming back to PASM with an X-H it's just a new " technical " issue, that's won't change my photographies, I just need a very good stab and, on the top of the all, a better AF.

Newest Fuji cameras have focusing issues even in AF-S. Here you have a simple test to see for yourself. (This is why everyone is getting muddy images with their Fujis). Test arrangement: - Modern Fuji X-Camera with X-Trans sensor and Phase detect autofocus. (e.g. X-T4, X-Pro3…) - Place the camera on a sturdy object or use a tripod - use a standard lens from Fuji (e.g. 23mm f2, 35mm f2) ideally stopped down two stops so you can „track“ the sharpness in your images - activate the focusing scale in your menu so you can see the focusing inconsistency in real time -AF-S single point (use the second smallest focusing point) - focus on a subject in medium distance (approx. 5-10 meters) using a central focusing point - don‘t do the test in dark indoor rooms, it seems like the problem is occurring much more often in sunny conditions outside or in bright indoor areas - refocus/ half press the shutter button a couple of times and you will see the focusing scale jumping around significantly

I was super happy with my x-t2, the manual dials photography made a huge difference in making me want to take photos, and wanted the small-ish size to always take my camera with me, so i picked the x-t5. Still not sure if I made the right choice, I dislike having crop for video on top of already using a crop sensor, and that tilt screen was my no. 1 complaint with the x-t2, it’s super frustrating seeing it return. It doesn’t seem the size of the x-h2 is that different and I read good things about its psam compared with other brands. Regardless, they’re both great cameras so we can’t really go much wrong in the end.

Choose the one which have the dials and screen moviment you prefer. I dont find the traditional fuji top dials to be super practical to change iso/ss because you need to reach out with the other hand in a pinch position and turn. Besides, I almost always shoot aparture priority, leaving iso ans ss to the camera to decide (within my boundries, for each type of scene). In manual mode, it is a breeze to change things without top traditional dials. Also, 7 custom modes in a spin of a dial is very fast/convenient, more so with fuji because of the "recipes" we like to use (jpeg users). The articulating screen for my use case is best also. Besides that, the grip is better also on the xh2. And I really disagree that the top screen is waste of space. You can show all kinds of useful info like histogram, battery life, card space , etc,some even with the camera being off. For me, xh2 all the way.

6:08 I was one of these shooters that didn’t originally ‘buy in’ to the rhetoric of flippy screen VS Three way screen. I thought it was all ridiculous. However, after months of photography (and video) with the XH2s, the flippy screen is actually an annoyance and takes time in those precious moments. So, when I got the XT5, I really do see the point now of why this has been such a point of discussion. I am sold on the ‘photography first’ handling for the XT5, and I almost never use the XH anymore for photos. It’s now my dedicated video camera. Perfect set up!

@danfarmer_photo
@danfarmer_photo Жыл бұрын
@@tonyelsom Sure Tony, so then when I when I am shooting a high end kids party event and at lightening pace you see a shot coming together (kids don’t sit still for a single second. You have milliseconds to react), and it has to be a super low angle shot, camera almost to the ground. With the flippy screen facing out, to angle it, I then need to fold it completely out to the side, and rotate it around as it would now be facing the front. Also, by doing this, my left hand has come off the camera body to do so, rather than having a firm hand to now steady the body to reduce movement, and at that low angle, my left hand is now impeded because of the screen now out to the left, whereas with the tilt screen, I can remain gripping the camera, and with my last two fingers, slide them under to tilt it out, one single movement without looking as to not lose my eye on the shot. Shall I keep going? Like when after the low shot scenario, the flippy screen is now out to the side facing you after you went for the low shot, you immediately want to bring the view finder up to your eye for a standing shot as another shot comes together, but you can’t, because if you quickly fold the screen away, it is now facing inwards towards the body leaving you with no rear screen to check a shot or quickly go for an overhead shot because for the prior shot, it was rotated to face you, not forward as it would have been. Or, in this scenario, if you just put the body to your eye with the screen fully out to the left still, the viewfinder won’t even activate as the screen takes precedence being fully open. Whereas, with the tilt screen in this scenario, it would be slightly tilted out still as you bring the body back to your face, but in that single movement, the left hand grip allows for the thumb to quickly flatten the screen in again without taking your hand off the body (or your nose can even do it). Then the screen is in the exact spot I need it if an overhead, or low shot develops in front of me again. I get paid good money for these high end kids parties, and also for family portraits. People choose me for the family portraits over my competitors because they like that I capture their families in moments that are real with the kids movement, rather than stagnant and traditional portrait shots. I used to shoot Nikon z6ii, with a tilt screen, and then went to Sony. As fast as Sonys autofocus is, it was me that was slowed down by the flippy screen. Since moving to the XT series after using the XH series by Fujifilm, I am back to getting more shots like back in my z6ii days. Tony, I made the comment based off experience, lots of it. I hope that answers your question. ✌️

Yes, I too really struggle with my XT5 and the 100-400 lens. I keep knocking the front dial and blanking out my viewfinder. I'm going to try adding the metal grip, and I'm really hoping this will alleviate the issue. If not then I'll consider the XH2 or S models which hopefully have a large enough grip. I missed getting the XT4 which I think has the larger grip (built in) but other than that I just LOVE my Fujis!!! The new 40MP sensor is great but for my level of photography, where I was really happy with my XT3 / 26 MP I don't quite have the urge to own the 'latest' thing...If the metal grip helps I will be DELIGHTED! BTW I wanted to change before my XT3 was worn out (over 40,000 shots taken so far...)

I currently have the X-T5 and the X-H2. I use the X-T5 daily for real estate stills and love it. The rear LCD works best for me as it’s on a tripod about waist level and I can just tilt it up. I use the X-H2 strictly for video and very much prefer the rotating LCD for video. Both are great cameras. But I also used the X-T3 and X-H1 cameras in the same way for years. Old habits are hard to break.

I've said it elsewhere so... The vast majority of moans, criticisms & rejoicings appearing all over the internet now are referencing minute differences between the latest generation of cameras. To my (admittedly limited) knowledge, there are no real turkeys: Any enthusiast/pro standard camera is capable of producing superb results in almost any conditions. All over the forums & other rant spaces are camera users demanding better & better features, such as autofocus, tracking, face recognition etc. So-called professional togs are constantly demanding that the camera must handle all of the techie stuff, so as to leave the meat behind the viewfinder to concentrate on his/her Art; thus demoting photography to something far less than a genuine skill. And yet these same camera users still despise the efforts of those who shoot jpg, with the camera on Auto. Well - Apart from that gods-awful flappy screen on the x-t4 & x-h2... Obviously 😎

I agree with your video, especially the compromises section. I cannot see any good reason personally to downgrade to either of these cameras from my X-T4. Although for photography I far, FAR prefer the double axis tilt screen, when I want to do video the full articulated screen is very practical and I do miss it on my X-T2. On the flip side, as I said having such a screen for waist level shooting is a complete dealbreaker for me. I'm hoping for Fuji to make a screen design similar to what we can see on the GH6/S1H/A7RV for their larger bodies and maybe stick with the dual tilt for their photography camera as it would probably be more compact. That would completely remove the annoyance of having to choose between the true hybrid and the photographic one just for a screen design
@gmcubed
@gmcubed Жыл бұрын
Yeah, if the screen both flipped and tilted I probably wouldn't be compelled to upgrade to whatever the Xt6 ends up being. but in delaying that they essentially guarantee I upgrade if they do implement that next time. Probably intentional on their part to milk fans who want the best of both worlds.

The X-H2 grip is great but it is fixable on the X-Tx series. I'm using an X-H1 and X-T3 and with the L-bracket with grip-extension on, I feel the grip of the X-T3 is just as comfortable for me as on the X-H1. I do really like the top LCD of my X-H1 though. I find it very useful, especially, actually, when the camera is off I can still see battery status and how many shots are left. In this sense, the X-H1 has the best top place of any Fuji camera so far! Regarding the joystick, I found the X-H2(s) joystick less comfortable to reach and use with my hands but probably something that I could get used to. And those 3 buttons on top of the X-H2(s), they are really uncomfortable to reach for me as well. Definitely not good ergonomics. Ergonomics of the X-H2(s) could also be improved by swapping the PASM dial and the LCD screen, so that you can use everything with the right hand without having to change your grip on the camera!

I have both the xh2 and xt5 and I’m thinking of just returning the xt5 and keeping the xh2. One main reason is the grip while I can get a L bracket for the xt5, that would defeat the purpose and make the camera bulkier. I mainly use sigma lenses and coming from Sony I don’t really miss the dials that much either! Plus the better EVF and build quality is a plus for only a few hundreds extra.

I am wondering how simple it is to adjust the aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, and shooting mode (aperture, shutter, manual, program, and auto) on the H2 as compared to the T5. Is it quick access as it is through dials without having to take your eyes off the view finder? How are the shutter, exposure, and aperture modes access on either camera?

I am thinking which one of these I should get and use as a backup cam for my X-T4 (or vice versa). It is really tough as both have features I like/don't like. I want to have a battery grip for sports and custom modes with the ability to store more settings than just looks, but also I like to push in the dials in the back/front and I like the smaller grip that I can make larger with a smallrig plate, but the big grip might be a bit too long and still too small in height. I don't like the buttons on the top too much but I like the screen with the settings, as I sometimes shoot in the dark where I can't tell, which positions the dials are in. Tough one.

Thank you for this video! I really need this in helping to make a decision. I've been torn between the T5, H2 and the Nikon Z6II. I'm also a fan of the H2 screen as I feel it would be better to see myself while filming videos. So it was interesting to me that you loved the grip and screen on the H2 and you still picked the T5. Not having your favorite screen using the T5 is it still easy to record videos when starting a channel without seeing yourself or maybe not seeing yourself helps with the nerves? lol

In Australia the X-H2 and X-T5 are in bizarro world. The X-T5 can be at best had for around $1800usd, whereas the X-H2 is regularly found at $1350, despite it having better EVF and supposed to be the "flagship". If anything it should be the other way around.

I think in 6:05 author intended to say "It's limiting on X-H2", since X-T5 gives more flexibility. Also I use X-H1 and can relate, that fully-flippy screen would be a little better, it always takes me a few seconds to unlock the screen from the clicky axis lock before adjusting it, not the best use of time, when there is alot of action going on.

Good rundown of both cams, and excellent point about the need to compromise. I was disappointed that the X-T5 didn't have a deeper grip and/or support for a battery grip (though I'm likely to get the little baseplate addition to beef it up), but for 95%+ of what I do a photographic tool was more important than a video one. You're totally right about the power switch on the 5 - it's much easier to flip on my 2 & 3 - I'm hoping this loosens a bit with time and use. I haven't used it to shoot my son playing soccer since it's off-season, but I've been able to make the X-T3 work reasonably well for that so I don't really feel the need for the X-H2S's faster AF and crazy buffer. And TBH, if I was going to shoot sports on the regular, I'd probably pickup a Sony for that purpose (heresy!). I'm glad Fujifilm has delineated the lines again to allow people to select the feature set and ergonomics that match their workflow.

@@nugunzer I have the official Fuji one for the 5. The model is the MHG-XT5. It’s a bit pricey but it works well for what it is. If you use any Arca Swiss mount tripods, the grip uses that as a base plate, which is convenient. The small amount of heft and additional depth of the grip is helpful.

the feel of the xt dials feel good, but I dunno about perfect. it would make more sense to me if they would swap them, either physically or in software. Why is the iso dial on the left but its indicator on the viewfinder on the right? why does one dial count up clockwise, and the other counter clockwise? They need to fix these things but they never will.

However, having recently purchased a S10, and having perfectly capable- for my needs- don't have the need for another, relatively new, camera at this time and maybe not for a few years'. Were I in fact in the market, I would go for the larger form camera body, the PASM dials are familiar to me and don't in fact cause the potential issues the Fuji retro style camera lovers, naturally, cherish. My own and personal humble opinion: ask yourself if you are more of a photographer or more of a videographer. That is, to which of these activities you dedicate more than 60% of your work. If the answer is a photographer, buy the X-T5 and skip reading comparisons between these two bodies. If the answer is videographer, buy the X-H2 and stop reading comparisons. If the answer is 50 +/- 10%, or if both parts are equally important to your work, buy both, because with either of the two you will fall short in one of your activities. Now, if what you want is to have the one that most satisfy your ego, buy the most expensive one and skip the comparisons. ;-) :-)
