Were the video in your clips on auto, or were they using the ND filter? I am in a similar position where I want to be more in the moment for crucial events with the family. After being stubborn and OCD about the 180* rule I am starting to accept that I would rather have the moment than fuss about proper shutter speed and filters.

Great video I have been using my x100v for video for a while now when i am out with my family, it produces amazing footage, even with all its flaws its great for just straight up documenting life. and even as a B or C camera in someones bag this is a robust camera in a tiny package. People don't give it enough credit for what it truly is capable of. I think most of the reviews out there are either regurgitating information or just haven't used it enough to give it a proper review.
@chrismeetschris Жыл бұрын
Couldn’t agree more, and I think you’re right on there - the camera is great for documenting, period. As far as others, they will always smear with specs etc, but the stat sheet will never truly show what happens in the game. One person says one thing and it becomes a script for everyone else. The only true downside is the the overheating, it doesn’t really affect me because as I said in the video, I tend to shoot in shorter bursts, but if you record 4K I find I get a around 5-6 minutes before it starts to give me the overheating warning :)
@aefoundry Жыл бұрын
@@chrismeetschris yea the record time and over heat kills me but I’m like you where I record in burst, I have my other Fuji cameras for longer interview recording session and some times I’ll use the x100v for b roll, what I tell everyone is every camera is different all have pros and cons but it’s down to the artist to learn the quirks and us it to their advantage, at least that’s my philosophy :)

Chris, since you are loving shooting video on the V it would be helpful if you share your technique(s) when handholding this guy? Do you add stabilization in post? Would you consider a small gimbal stick?
@chrismeetschris Жыл бұрын
Hey there! I do not use post stabilization. Im sure a small gimbal would be cool - but I really dislike gimbals. I just make sure when I shoot I’m very steady. I think about a few shots to make up a sequence so that I don’t need to move the camera as much. Almost everything is composed of a wide / medium / tight, this is also why I prefer using the WCL (28mm converter) the shakes are less noticeable than the built in 35mm, as well as it adds a bit more weight to the set up making it more stable :) I’ll also sometimes put the strap around my neck and hold the camera out - this also helps stabilize the footage. Hope that helps!

@MattFitzgerald Жыл бұрын
Hey Chris -- This is the exact type of review I was looking for on cameras like this. I've had an M10R for the past couple years and the verdict is in, I can't commit to only photo to document life. I want the same checklist that you listed here -- small, enjoyable to use, exceptional performance in both photo AND video. So I have to start looking at the Q3, Fuji Lineup, or A7C options. The built in ND makes this bad boy tempting. Do you just flick to 1/50 + ND every time? Or how do you set up for quick video access?
@chrismeetschris Жыл бұрын
Hey Matt, thanks for the comment. The m10-R is a great camera, but I feel you! the best possible hybrid (if budget can support) is probably the Q3. It's got the photo and video capabilities where it lacks is in two areas: 1. no built in ND and two, no "film simulations" -- I know it has profiles, but they're not as nice as Fujis, obviously this is only an issue if you don't want to process yourself. as far as the x100v goes, its not "the best IQ" for video -- but as you can see in the video, it looks great and if you can live with its limitations I think its a GREAT option. I map the ND to to the front button on the OVF/EVF lever to make it easy to flick on and off, and the beauty is once you flip to video, I have it set to "silent video mode" which makes the video settings independent of the dials. to change aperture and shutter speed you use the on screen menu, so your photo and video specs are never colliding with each other. It makes switching between the two such a breeze. sorry for the stream of consciousness here, hope that helps a bit! summary: my photo settings are on the dials. When I switch to video I pop the Nd filter on with a click of a button, my shutter is always at 1/48, and I always shoot in a film simulation.
@MattFitzgerald Жыл бұрын
@@chrismeetschris No I loved the stream of consciousness. Great thoughts. I haven't heard of the Silent Video Mode, sounds like a very intuitive way to set things up. I'm pretty certain that the Q3 doesn't have the same CINE mode from the SL2 line that gives shutter angle and a few other goodies that make video a bit more intuitive. (But it still has LOG thankfully.) Everyone that shoots Leica doesn't really shoot video so its hard to find a good review that covers the video portion properly... Too many good cameras these days. Makes things easier and harder at the same time. I think the primary thing that keeps me from the X100V is the 8 bit. Who knows when they are going to choose to release the next rendition!

All of it was shot on the WLC, I used all manual settings, white balance / shutter etc. I forgot to mention it, but pinned it in the comment up there somewhere - my favourite part of the x100v for video is the built in nd filter.
