Value is what led me to my XT-3 about 2 years ago. I got a basically new/used camera with a lens, grip and extra batteries and still in the original packaging with a year of warranty still left on it for half(sometimes less than half) the cost of some prices for just a body. As you said, the ability to buy quality lenses at a good price was also a factor. Why buy a body if you can't afford any lenses for it? I waited for almost two years now to buy any Fuji lenses and it was well worth the wait. With these new bodies and lenses Fuji released there have been great deals on "old" stuff. I was able to get a v1.0 XF56 and an XF90mm because both were being sold for less than half of the usual prices. And, both are mint with the 56 being only six months old. Those two lenses are soooo sweet!! Thanks for a good practical review!! Have a great weekend.

Thanks Charlie! I agree with you 100% and you made a great move getting used gear. The funny thing is that an XT4 was amazing one month ago but now that the XT5 is out, it's going to be lacking in some way. You know what I mean? The "older" gear was the "must have" gear of 2 years ago. When I picked up my R5, I figured they were still coming out with RF lenses and I would get one eventually when the beefed up the lineup. But what they have done is create the L line and then a very cheap line. There's nothing in between like their used to be with the EF lenses. Having said that the R5 really rocks the EF lenses anyway so I'm not complining --- too much! LOL thanks for watching!

@@PeteCocoPhoto Oh yeah, that "old" gear is just no good any more!! LOL! Omar Gonzalez did a great video about that topic with the XF56 f1.2. For amateur folks like me, used is the best way to go. Like you said, the old stuff was yesterdays must have equipment. For me the XT-3 was the perfect choice for price, performance and as a learning platform. Thanks again for your content. @@brso3505 No doubt it's not easy to find them. I waited almost two years before I stumbled upon two that I wanted somehow. Both were like brand new and at prices I couldn't believe. It was very lucky. No system has cheap lenses. For me, at the time, the XT-3 was what I found at the best price for the performance. It was less than a year old and came with the 18-55, extra batteries, non-battery grip and all still in the original packaging. I shopped for a long time and looked at all brands. I initially was looking a the Canon M50 and the Sony A6XXX cameras. The Sony bodies were just too expensive. The M50 seemed more about vlogging. I just kept shopping the used market when I found this XT-3 If I had the budget, I'd probably be using a Sony A7IV. But, way too expensive for me. So, I''m not a Fuji fanboy who won't acknowledge or try other brands. What things are driving you crazy about the camera you have?

@Br So True, but for working pros, being #1 in the specs department isn't the only consideration. I know tons of amazing photogs shooting with XT3s and their work is incredible, even with the limitations in the AF. I've been a Canon loyalist for 20 years, and the cameras and lenses are amazing, no doubt, but they are also super large and expensive. That's a big reason why I am trying to convince myself to switch over completely LOL. Thanks for your input!

The R5 in this situation is not 2x better. But this is a studio situation. Almost any camera will do this will with good glass and the controlled lighting. How about a test of these two cameras in low light situations? How about sports? In those two situations the R5 would be noticeably better.
@PeteCocoPhoto

@@maylonrojer130 As I said in the video, I am a portrait photographer working mainly in a studio. The whole point of the video was for me to test it in the situation that I would use it as a portrait photographer, which I laid out clearly in the video. If you want to know how it handles sports, race cars, video, etc, this video is clearly not addressing any of that. Nowhere do I say that the R5 wouldn't be better for low light or sports. I agree with all of that but it wasn't the point of this particular test.

@@PeteCocoPhoto I completely get and agree with what you are saying. But there are comments from others where they seem to imply that the cameras are on par in all situations. I was merely pointing out that for a studio situation looking at price and performance... this may be the case. But the R5 is meant to perform well in all situations, with not being a master of any. But this is a major reason for its cost.

I agree with you on the focusing interface. I just got the XH2, which is my first Fuji camera. Seeing the constant white focusing square and the jumping from eye to eye is a little irritating, wish there was a way to disable it completely. I have found that choosing "wide area" gets rid of the "square" but it seems to use less focusing points in this mode. For now I'm using adapted Sigma Art glass with the Fringer pro ii (works great) so I can't speak on native glass behavior.
@PeteCocoPhoto
@PeteCocoPhoto Жыл бұрын
Exactly. I prefer tracking over wide zone because I find it to be more accurate too. The only way to get rid of the square, temporarily, is by assigning a button for LEFT/RIGHT EYE CHANGE. When you press the button, yellow brackets appear and the white square around they eye. It's perfect! But it only appears when you do that, and it should just be that way all the time in face/eye tracking. Hopefully they will address this in a firmware update.

I also found the quality difference between my Canon bodies and Fuji to be rather negligible. As primarily a studio portrait and theatrical photographer, I find myself reaching for the Fuji X-H2 body all the time now. In fact, all my Canon gear is in storage and I am travelling with just the X-H2, 16-55 f2.8, 50-140 f2.8, 35 f2, 50 f2, and I think I'll pick up the new 56 f1.2 R WR when I get the Caribbean islands and can score a good price on the lens. As much as I love my Canon gear, I just love the size, weight, and feel of the Fuji combinations. I also find that I am utilising the jpegs straight out of camera so much more than I ever did with the Canon. I always felt like I needed to tweak the raw images with the Canon. I always shoot raw+jpeg, but the images coming out of the Fuji are so nice SOC that unless I'm shooting for a client, I find that I'm rarely touching the raws that much any more. I do miss the shallow DOF that is easier to achieve with the Full Frame sensor, but, I don't miss it enough to switch back. All in all, I've been very happy with my switch to Fuji, even more so now since I got my hands on the X-H2.

Nice review, Pete. Thank you. As a long time Canon user( 40 years- from film cameras to the digital era), I left Canon as I felt their RF lens line up had become cost prohibitive for me. I moved to Fuji as I felt their lenses were absolutely top notch & offered excellent quality for money spent. IMHO, Fuji auto focus is now becoming competitive with any of the other top camera manufactures & in all likelihood, will continue to improve with all future camera models that are released.I am heavily invested in the Fuji lens system & although I am not currently interested in the Fuji X-H2 or X-H2S, I am looking forward to future camera models by Fuji. Again, thank you for your review& best wishes for your channel.

Thanks for the video, I have the R6/Sigma 105 as my primary headshot combo, LOVE it but the 105 is a beast of a lens for outdoor work. I just added the RF100mm that I got used/trade in an older lens so paid $550 OOP for it, this could be my new outdoor lens vs the 105 & 70-200 for weight savings alone. I would like to try it for headshots as well. That being said, I recently got the X100V and LOVE the Fuji colors so much so I am considering selling it to get the XH2 for as you described “personal projects” shoots where I don’t need 1.4 bokeh or razor sharp IQ, The HS2 with a 35mm/85mm FOV equal lenses would be MORE than suitable for 90% of the client shoots. As I said to another Semi-Pro like me, what clients see vs what we see are 2 different things, the higher end gear is for US not them.

I have one concern only after watching this video and maybe you can help me here….I’ve heard there have been complicated tethering issues with Fujis and I’m wondering if you shot tethered with this XH2, and did you have any problems? But I purchased the the canon r5 50 1.8 for around 350 and it is an amazing value. I still prefer Fuji colors. I my mind Canon r5 will reach farther in to the future if your willing to pay, Fuji not so much. I just want to have both, maybe I'll buy a used XT4 and be done with it.

Stephen, that's what I did haha. I purchased an XT4 as my backup! I still carry around my old 5diii just in case when on location but the XT4 does candids, outdoor portraits, etc; basically everything out of my studio work. And really part of that is that I would need a separate Capture One to tether the fuji so it's not so easy to use both in the same software.

I had Fuji xt2 and then xt4 and was always frustrated with the AF and the IQ when I would compared to my old 5DII pictures. Shortly after they announced the XH2 I decided to switch to canon R5. The focus stick (focus lever) can also be used if WIDE is selected for AF MODE. • When DIRECT AF POINT SELECTION or EDIT FOCUS AREA is chosen for BUTTON/DIAL SETTING > FOCUS LEVER SETTING > TILT , you can also switch subjects using the focus stick (focus lever) or (during viewfinder photography) touch controls. •When the camera is focused on an eye, you can switch from one eye to the other using a function button to which RIGHT/LEFT EYE SWITCH has been assigned. It could be a KZbin thing…the Fuji also looked a little over saturated. But lighting/focus makes a difference as does noise reduction/iso. The 16-55 is a really sweet lens but softer at 55mm. The shots were probably faithful to what that lens can do but I doubt it showcases what the sensor can really do. I’ve seen results on my XT3 that look like the r5 on my 26mp sensor in terms of detail. Good lighting, good lens, and an XT3 can be damn impressive. Of course there is an argument to be made that we WANT softness in portraits. Basically, in a studio setting, controlling light and shooting f/5.6-f/11 there are many Fuji lenses that should produce stunning, detailed results.

DR in Fuji is impressive (being a 24mm sensor), it definitely holds it own! Handling and lay out of Canon rocks, no one has it as Canon does! Fuji is a little clumsy in the H line however the T line is more forgiving (because of it’s retro style). I just ordered the XT5 (have the XT2 & 3) but I’m counting the days in which Canon bring those R lenses price down 🙇🏻! Totally agree. Canon AF is still much better than Fuji. Static subjects, such as portrait photography, the eye AF from Fuji is pretty good. Way better than previous Fuji generations. However, when the subject moves quickly AF starts to fall behind. Even just walking towards the camera it can struggle and miss. Noticed most X-T5/H2 promos or reviewers don't show eye AF tracking people dynamically dancing, spinning or walking around etc. It is mostly when they are stationary. Sony/Canon/Nikon they display eye AF for sports, break dancing and fast motions etc. AF pretty sticky to the subject's eye.

As for lenses you weren’t comparing apples to apples. The 56 mm f1.2 from fuji is closer to an 85mm on FF. Also f1.2 on crop is more like a 1.8 on FF. The 56 is also not weather sealed. So get the 85 f2 macro which is in the same ball park and done. Generally I also have an issue with the canon lens line up. They have either budget or very expensive large fast glass. I want to see some mid range lenses like a 50 f1.4 for example. I don’t want to spend 3k for every lens. But I don’t mind 800-1500 euro range for a good performer with some weather sealing. But when comparing lenses to try to to like for like rather than you taking the bias confirmation route

Great review. I don't know what your opinion is as a professional portrait shooter is but I feel like the Fuji isn't producing images as sharp as it should be. I have the X-H2 and it seems like all of my shots of people (where Eye AF is used) come out a little muddy and soft looking. I came across a this review (kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4XNpmSGmdNlgLM) where they seem to be reproducing the lack of sharpness that I am finding with my images. One of the commenters has stated that as a Fuji X shooter they believe it's still the Eye AF causing issues, as single point AF produces much sharper images. Like you I want to use Eye AF though, so it's a little frustrating to say the least.
@PeteCocoPhoto
@PeteCocoPhoto Жыл бұрын
Thanks Ryan. I will give that AF method idea go. Some have suggested changing the sharpening and other parameters in-camera, but I haven't given it a try myself. It also seems that the lens you use makes a big difference in the results, as the new lenses are supposed to work best on resolving the 40mp sensor. I didn't have any sharpness issues in the test I did for this video, and I shot everything in continuous/tracking, but the overall results were not as close to the Canon as I thought they would be. One of the things I've come to understand about Fuji is that you can't really use them "out of the box" like a Canon. You gotta do some adjusting of the settings for best results.

(Image quality) 6:50 This demonstrates the traditional main image quality problem with Fuji: It simply fades 50% of the details 😱 That's because of Fuji using their X-Trans sensors on their X series, and them granting the regular Bayer type sensor 'privilege' only to their GFX medium format. All other brands user Bayer as well, for a good reason. X-Trans destroys details. Internet search "Fuji waxy skin" = 148.000 hits Internet search "fuji landscape watercolor x trans" = 197.000 hits, i.e. also in landscape shots, details are faded as well. This is possibly a Asian/Japanese cultural thing, where many people might actually prefer that skin has to look smooth like wax or porcelain (=geisha tradition). Also depicting landscapes as water color paintings has a long tradition in Japan. (costs) 15:20 You fall for the mistake of comparing 1.2 for full-frame with 1.2 for APS-C. However, both sensor sizes yield identical results (same light gathering = same noise, and the same bokeh) when a Fuji 56/1.2 is next to any full-frame 85mm/1.8. Given that the Fuji 56/1.2 is actually just a full-frame 85/1.8 (achieving the same optical tasks and results), then I find the 56/1.2 way to overpriced for being just a 85/1.8. Fuji monetarizes the misunderstanding of (some) people not understanding results equivalence between sensor sizes. On a more extreme scale, most smartphones have f/1.x lenses built in, but nobody would dare to compare their results with full-frame 1.x lenses neither. (usability) Often Fuji loyalists claim that Fuji would make cameras "for photographers". However, their user interface flaws for handling eye choice (as the focusing target) demonstrates, that Fuji does NOT make cameras for the needs of "real photographers", else they wouldn't have been so agnostic for the need for professional users of an eye AF system. Your video confirmed to me, that Fuji is not an option (except maybe a family camera) (but for this, the Fuji system is way too expensive IMHO) 😉

x-trans itself doesn't destroy details it requires a more sophisticated demosaicing algorithm to reassemble the coloured sensor data into pixels. Unfortunately for Fuji Adobe lightroom has been historically poor in this area and why many Fuji shooters use Capture One or DxO Photolab since their demosaicing was clearly superior. It's possible that Lightroom has improved in this area. Of course this could be a major problem for working professionals dependent upon Lightroom. It's worth remembering that equivalence is about trying to get the 'same' photograph from two different camera systems with the same depth-of-field from the same vantage point (position of camera). To that end you need to multiply the focal length by 1.5 and drop the aperture down a stop. If you don't care about replicating the same depth-of-field then you don't need to stop down, or to put it another way equivalence isn't a catch-all-argument for comparative performance, a 1.4 lens is still a 1.4 lens.
@tubularificationed
@tubularificationed 7 ай бұрын
Yes, 1.4 is 1.4. One should say: 1.4 behaves on APS-C as if it was a 2.0 on fullframe. These two lenses are mostly the same (they collect the same amount of light from the same angle of view). Therefore, these lenses would have the pretty much the same front lens element diameter, and overall the same size and weight. The APS-C version would only differ in its aft part, where it projects that same information onto a smaller target rectangle, which therefore appears a stop brighter. But it still carries the same amount of noise in it.
